Remarks
As mentioned before, it has a good return on investment, and life overall is very relaxed here. As the strength of the college is less, everyone knows everyone and one can easily spend a nice time here. However, one has to be career-oriented and create their own opportunities to achieve things
Entrance Preview
I took the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations(WBJEE) and secured a rank of 8476. I chose this college because first of all this is a government college so it has a reputation in that itself and also the low fees. Plus it was the best college I could get for my rank.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum can be rated as Average at best since most of the institutes of West Bengal follow a pretty old-fashioned curriculum with little scope of research if no initiative is taken by the students themselves. Research is not really encouraged and people are happy to just get a job after the 4 years of their curriculum.
Internships Opportunities
No, the college does not provide internships. Any initiative will have to be taken by the students personally and the college has no involvement in any of it.
Placement Experience
Placements were at a time really good with 100% placements in Ceramic Technology department every year but as far as the Information Technology(IT) and Computer Science and Engineering(CSE) departments are concerned. the general situation has degraded over the years and at present is at its lowest. This I say is the first one to be placed in my department(at Wipro Technologies). Offered packages are highest at around 9 Lakhs per Annum and 3.2 LPA at an average.
College Events
The college has a lot of technical and cultural activities which are divided among the 4 years of college life as far as organizing them is concerned. Saraswati puja, Vishwakarma puja, Independence and Republic day programmes are held. An annual cultural fest called Jagriti, and an annual Technical fest, called Karmatek, are also organized by the students.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee is really modest as the college is a government college. Semester fees for CT department is INR 3000 per semester, INR 6000 per semester for CSE, and INR 12000 per semester for IT department. Examination fee of INR 1000 has to be paid by each student of each department per semester. There is a one-time admission fee of INR 5000 including the cost of admissions, medical fee, caution money, etc. Caution money of INR 300 is refundable after the end of the 4-year curriculum. Miscellaneous expenditure includes paying for annual functions and student-organized activities.
Campus Life
Campus life here is very chilled and relaxing if one has the intention to enjoy. The people around are friendly and one can easily have a nice enjoyable time and moments. There are much more boys than girls here. Sports does not have a lot of scope owing to the small campus and lack of sporting facilities but students can get involved in extra-curriculars like robotics, chess competitions, creative writings and debates if they are willing to organize it themselves.
Hostel Facilities
A new boys hostel is being built and will start operations in 2018 entrants. Since the number of female students is very less, the college does not provide hostel or mess facilities to female students. The new facilities, once in place, will be very good. The food offered at the current hostel is excellent owing to a really adept cook. The average cost of staying at a hostel is around INR 2000 per month, and varies according to occupancy at a given time.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni network of the Ceramic Technology department is absolutely outstanding since this college was established in 1941 and has a huge alumni base, but the other 2 departments(IT and CSE) are comparatively new, still one can make their place if they want.
Exam Structure
Examinations are held every semester, apart from 2 internal class tests per subject per semester besides assignments. This is very normal and I wouldn't call it very hectic. The teachers are not misers as far as giving marks are concerned, but will not give marks to anything and everything. If the syllabus is completed before time, students need not attend college on the rest of the days but can utilize them by studying at home.
Admission
I got admission in this college through the counselling procedure after the release of the WBJEE results which is conducted by the joint entrance board itself a few days after the results. After being allocated a college based on our choices and our ranks, we had to report to the respective institute and complete the admission procedures which involved filling up of an enrollment form and paying of the required fees, after which we were given the dates of the start of session.
Faculty
The permanent faculty is highly qualified, but the part-time faculty is really not up to the mark and this is very clearly noticeable. Most of the faculty know what they are doing but the will not encourage new ideas and progressive thought because more or less everyone is very laidback. However if students take the initiative, they can get the most out of the faculty.
