Remarks

To apply for a Master's in Jawaharlal Nehru University, you have to be a graduate from any recognisable University with a minimum of 55%. The admission process could have been a bit more organised in the sense that they could give us proper dates for result announcement.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

I have taken up Linguistics as my course, Linguistics is the scientific study of language, where we get to explore the similarities and differences between world languages, and try to find out the endangered and extinct languages of the world, we then try to revive the extinct languages and try hard to preserve the endangered ones. It's an interesting subject because it tells you how important and unique every language is. We have 6 faculty members in our department right now, 6 more to be recruited this year, whereas we are almost 80students including both 1st and 2nd years. For now we have limited choices to choose among professors, but hopefully we'll get more recruits later this year Faculty members are well qualified, they are PhD holder. Some of them also have very well reputations in their fields. I have only had my 1st semester till now, the exam happened 2 months before its due time since our course is running late because of COVID 19 pandemic.

Internships Opportunities

4

There is no campus placement in my course and department. But the professors do recommend us to get internships from Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore where one can easily earn 800 per day. These internships help in gaining knowledge about different languages and as a stepping stone for higher studies like MPhil and PhDs.

Fees and Financial Aid

The fee structure according to me is very affordable for a normal citizen. I had to pay an amount of 268 for the admission and for the second semester 108 as the semester fee. There was a talk of fee hike in the last few years but the students of JNU went on a mass protest to stop the fee hike. A scholarship named MCM is available for EWS students, in which if the students' parents earn less than 2.5lacs per annum then the student is eligible for the scholarship. Through this scholarship the student get 2000 per month. None other scholarships or financial assistance available for students except for PWD students

Campus Life

4.5

I don't think there is any annual fest & tech fest in the campus but many cultural functions happen by different political organisations, for example Bengali New Year, Kerala Day, Utkal Divas, Ambedkar Jayanti, Gandhi Jayanti etc in their respective months. All sort of books and journals are available in the library. JNU library is one of the biggest libraries of this country, it's a 8 storey building with reading rooms attached to it. There are different sections in the library for different subjects. Classrooms are well equipped smart classrooms, some of them have ACs as well if not all, there are projectors, whiteboards and podiums for the professors. There is a stadium in the campus, and coaches available as well. There are badminton courts and basketball courts all around the campus, and if you need to play any particular game you can always go to the stadium and play. There are many social groups available in the campus and online, Jnu roundtable, jnu updates are 2 of them

Hostel Facilities

4

The rooms are well equipped with everything that a student needs, for masters students, it's a 2 seater room. Equipped with 2 wardrobes, 2 study tables, 2 chairs, 2 beds and a balcony, students can decorate the rooms as per their need, students can also keep coolers for summer or heaters for winter. The meal quality is really good, we get nonveg thrice a month it includes, chicken biryani once, chicken curry, fish/egg once, in veg there's paneer and seasonal vegetables, for breakfast there is bread, butter, jam, poha, dosa, idli, chhole bhature, etc. There's a system of special dinner, which happens at the end of every month. For the security deposit of hostel, you pay a ?6000 which is refundable when your course gets over. You can take rented rooms or PGs outside, they are almost 2 kms away, and a monthly rent varies from 5k to 10k for students.

Other Applied Colleges

Hyderabad Central University | MA in Applied Linguistics

I preferred JNU over HCU because the fees here are less

I have did my BA in the same course that's why I opted for this again in my MA. The curriculam was quiet good according to the previous syllabus. Whatever I have read in my bachelors, I got to know it deeper in my Masters. The timings of the exams were okay according to the syllabus. Also there was no difficulty level if you have read the syllabus properly.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Since I had done my bachelors in Sociology (H), I found it fit to pursue public administration and due to my other prior engagements I opted for the ODL programme hence IGNOU. The course can be very lengthy and tiring and above all you have to figure it all out on you own and so it can get a bit confusing too sometimes. The exams and assignment submissions happen only once a year.

Course Curriculum Overview:

No matter how poor the faculty is, the course is well-defined. The syllabus is a but lengthy but quite useful for later educational requirements. But there is anothe rloop hole here. The syllabus of the Department of English shows a list of around 25 courses that they offer the students, but that is just a dillusion. They only offer limited courses with no choices to the students to choose amongst them. There can be much betterment if the department gives more options to the students to choose from and recruite good faculty members for the same. The exam frequency is fine, there are internal assignments and then end semester examinations, for each semester.

The knowlede I have gained will surely help me in my future career.

Delhi University - [DU], Master of Arts [MA] (East Asian Studies)
Reviewed on Jan 17, 2024(Enrolled 2023)

Course Curriculum Overview:

I chose this course considering my interest in East Asian culture and Languages. The Faculty: Student ratio is 1:40 and most of the professors are Ph.D scholars. The teaching method comprises reading books and learning after it which stipulates the form of an ancient education system like any other mediocre Indian University. "An important factor to consider is that faculty sometimes fell short due to a shortage of subject masters(or should I say language) For example, Chinese faculty is much in number and experience than Korean and Japanese while the latter suffer the incompetency of the number of faculty. Term exams happened to be very fast but it was due to the internal issues that remain consistent in DU and except that there would be tons of Internal Assessments that play a major role in one's SGPA. Exam level - Hard!
