Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) known as Thapar University is one of the best engineering universities in India and is ranked among the top 50 engineering universities. After resigning from JEE I had to appear for JOSAA counseling and was offered a college seat. The college admission process was good and the staff was very cooperative and professional.

Course Curriculum Overview

The college curriculum is very large and has recently been updated to meet the latest industry standards. The curriculum sounds long because it integrates all the concepts of engineering in-depth and helps us to understand all the important things in detail. The university faculty is unique in that they have completed their Ph.D. degrees at top Indian universities and can expose themselves to industry and share with us that experience that is very useful to us.

The college internship program is well designed and helps us improve our professional knowledge and provide us with the right information. We are also provided with internship scholarships the average salary we earn for internships is estimated at 45k.

The University itself is famous for its placement packages and maintains a 100% placement record. The placement was one of the main reasons for choosing to enter Thapar University. The highest college salary was about 45 LPAs and the average salary was 20 LPA. The college was able to invite more than 75+ companies with a college placement drive. The college offers scholarships accordingly. The college has more than 75 programs that the college offers bursaries. College life is very good. The college infra is very well developed and maintained. Classes are very open and equipped with AC ad a digital board. The college library has just been renovated and all kinds of books from all over the world are available. The college campus also has a WiFi Internet connection. The labs are modern and all kinds of equipment are available for research work. The elders of the hostel are very friendly and cooperative.

Hostel Facilities

Hostel rooms are available in dual, triple and single dormitories with AC and Non-AC facilities on a budget basis. Hostel rooms are fully furnished and well maintained. The quality of the hostel food is very good. Hostel toilets are cleaned regularly. Hostel management is professional and hostel staff are highly trained and the hostel's conduct is very well maintained. The hostel campus also has a WiFi Internet connection.

A Vibrant Campus with good learning and great opportunities

Companies start coming summer internships in the 5th and 6th semester though ,CG cuts are imposed so very less students are elgible to sit for these companies, The real placement season is 7th and 8th semester and many companies visit campus for placements. around 60 percent students got placed in the recent placement drive. The major recruiters are: Oracle, CISCO, JPMC,Deloite,IBM,ZS etc.

There are 1 AC Lecture complex()LT with almost a seating capacity of 100-120 students, with smart screens and projector.
NITJ has well maintained 4 Girls hostel and 4-5 boys hostels with proper cleanliness and hostel staff.
They are 7 cafeterias in the Campus, including 3 Nescafe outlets,1 dominos and 3 regular canteens that serve food late night.

Dislikes

Wifi and connection issues in the hostels
Slow response to emails and late approval to applications
The ICE department faculty is quite strict. Tough grading system and administration.

Placement Experience:

NITJ has a placement cell, also known as the Centre of Training and Placements(TPO office of NITJ). The placement scenes differ depending on the courses offered. The average placements are 12-14LPA in the Computer Science branch. Every year, hundreds of companies, including Pvt and govt both. PSUs like HPCL and BPCL recruit students based on merit and academic excellence.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I’d rate the curriculum like 7/10 in terms of relevance and comprehensiveness — it covers all the major CSE subjects like DSA, OS, DBMS, CN, AI, ML, Cloud, Cybersecurity basics, etc., and honestly that was one of the reasons I chose this course because at least the core subjects are solid even if PTU keeps some old-school stuff in the syllabus. The curriculum does prepare you for real-world stuff, but only to a point — like, if you focus on coding labs and projects you’ll be fine for internships, but if you depend only on classroom theory then it won’t help much because industry wants hands-on skills. For higher studies also it’s okay because theory depth in subjects like OS and DBMS is decent enough. But yeah, improvements are definitely needed — some subjects feel outdated, teachers should use more practical examples, and we need more real projects instead of copy-paste lab manuals; also some faculty teach directly from slides which gets boring fast. Exams come twice per semester (sessionals) plus the final end-sem around December/May; they’re mostly easy if you write long answers, but tricky if you rely only on understanding because PTU likes theory-heavy questions. Overall, the system works, but it could be way more practical and industry-focused.

Likes

The campus is very green and clean. Infrastructure is good and one can feel fresh air here in campus
The faculty is excellent, almost all of the professors and assistant professors have a degree from renowned institutes. So they know their subject and field very well.
Hostels are good and affordable. Although the hostels itself are old, services are good and you get a nice room for the price/rent

Dislikes

The crowd isn't good. Always demotivated to do anything productive regarding studies. Some people are just here for time-pass
Very less site and outdoor visits. For practical experience, they should conduct industrial visits, but that happens rarely
Placements are really Dry and there is decline in company visits for placement.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.
