Remarks

I took JEE mains in 2019. In my April attempt I got a percentile of 94.62 i.e. a rank of 60241. Based on this I applied to various universities including thapar. Thapar has a separate website called admissions .thapar .edu. I registered here. Then after registration and proper verification of my details, I had to select the streams I want to apply for in order of preference. And in that order of preference whenever thapar will release a cut off for different rounds, I got alloted a branch based on my preference. Your branch upgrades to your higher preference when the cut off drops. You can choose to continue for next round or you can lock your current allotment and pay admission fees. I waited till the offline round to get my current branch. I didn't avail any reservation. But otherwise inside punjab and outside punjab cutoffs are different.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

I chose CSE at Thapar because its one of the best CSE courses in the country and the labs and faculty are equivalent to any international university. The course faculty and curriculum is up to date. The faculty we have are all pHD professors with years of experience and several publications/ awards in the field. On average during our lectures we have one professor taking a class of about 100. The teaching method is upto date and use of digital resources like power point presentation, e-notes, lecture videos, tutorials, class discussions, separate doubt sessions are all included. The term exams are well organised. We get one week off just before the exams which is considered as reading week or preparation week. And lab evaluations are covered in advance so when theory exam is held students have to worry only about theory. The exams are moderately difficult to pass. A student making notes and attending classes regularly can score 80-90% easily.

Internships Opportunities

4

There are several internship oppurtunties available at Thapar. Companies like Axis Bank, Optum, Adobe, Schlumberger, Salesforce, Trident group, ION group, texas instruments, GEP, Providence, VMware and many more are giving oppurtunities with stipends ranging from 15k to 70k per month. The projects/tasks are of all kinds from SDE to data entry to designing and front end development to marketting product interns to campus ambassador programs.

Placement Experience

4.5

Students can get interships in any semester. College starts introducing on campus intership oppurtunities from 5th Semester onwards. For campus placements students are eligible from 7th Semester onwards. For the current 4th year students, more than 1100 offers have been made so far and more than 160 companies have visited so far. About 85-90% of students get placed from my branch CSE. My plans after the degree are to maybe get a good campus placement. And if I get a better offer else where go for that instead. Major recruiters are thapar include but are not limited to Microsoft, Amazon, American Express, Deloitte, Dell, L&T, Infosys, Adobe, IBM, Optum, Pepsico, Samsung, and more.

Fees and Financial Aid

The fee structure might bite into the budgets of some students who do not want to invest so much into a bachelors degree. The annual tution fees comes to about 4Lakh and annual hostel-mess fees is about 1Lakh. So for my 4 year total is about 20Lakh. The fees is to be paid semester wise every 6 months. The fees hikes occassionally. Initial few semesters are cheaper and eventually it all rounds up to figures mentioned above. The cost of studying in Thapar other than the hostel and tuition fee, is not much. There are cheap cafes/restaurants on campus and various facilties like a salon, grocery store, dispensary available. I personally took an education loan to sponsor my degree. I took it from Union Bank of India where you can get it for 0 securities and low interest rates as they consider Thapar as a premier university along with others like BITS, IIT, NIT. But now with 3 years into my course, I feel the money is worth it because the life at Thapar is amazing.

Campus Life

5

There are several college fests, events, fairs, campaigns organised in thapar every month. Be it a social issue or a festival, we get involved in it all. There's a separate society dedicated to inducting new first years students with a bash. There's even a Concert held annually where we have previously had people like Ritviz as well. The ammenities at Thapar are well stocked as well. Regular e-rickshaw's to help you commute, a well equiped dispensary, wheel-chair friendly campus, lifts in all buildings, air conditioned class rooms, a proper complex of shopping. The sports aspect of Thapar is very competitive too. They have separate courts for different sports like cricket, football, lawn tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, athletics, etc. College even provides training and equipment. In terms of clubs and socities thapar has countless number of student run groups working in all fields like social service, technical domains or cultural aspects too.

Other Applied Colleges

Shiv Nadar University | Computer Science Engineering

Thapar has a better campus, better facilities and renowned experienced professors than Shiv Nadar

Course Curriculum Overview:

I’d rate the curriculum like 7/10 in terms of relevance and comprehensiveness — it covers all the major CSE subjects like DSA, OS, DBMS, CN, AI, ML, Cloud, Cybersecurity basics, etc., and honestly that was one of the reasons I chose this course because at least the core subjects are solid even if PTU keeps some old-school stuff in the syllabus. The curriculum does prepare you for real-world stuff, but only to a point — like, if you focus on coding labs and projects you’ll be fine for internships, but if you depend only on classroom theory then it won’t help much because industry wants hands-on skills. For higher studies also it’s okay because theory depth in subjects like OS and DBMS is decent enough. But yeah, improvements are definitely needed — some subjects feel outdated, teachers should use more practical examples, and we need more real projects instead of copy-paste lab manuals; also some faculty teach directly from slides which gets boring fast. Exams come twice per semester (sessionals) plus the final end-sem around December/May; they’re mostly easy if you write long answers, but tricky if you rely only on understanding because PTU likes theory-heavy questions. Overall, the system works, but it could be way more practical and industry-focused.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.
