Remarks
IIT Kharagpur is one of the best colleges in India. It provides good opportunities to its students. The placements are good, many students pursue research in the future too. The professors are good, the alumni network is great and the brand is I guess known to many. Moreover, the college+branch thing worked out with IIT KGP during counseling, So, here I am.
Course Curriculum Overview
Chemical engineering has wide applications in both industrial and research fields. Moreover, I didn't have anything specific in mind before choosing. So, I talked to a few people, learned that chemical engineering works out really well as a career choice. So, I opted for that.
Internships Opportunities
Yeah. On-campus internships are provided to students in their pre-final year. Around 30% secure on-campus internships and the rest go for off-campus internships or research internships. The stipends for on-campus internships are high, north of 75k per month for most companies. Off-campus internships depend on the individual actually, but many have landed great off-campus ones too.
Placement Experience
One of the best in the country. While most of the students get placed in coding and data profiles, a recent surge in interest in other fields like finance, consulting, PM has been observed. The average CTC is 14 lpa and the median is somewhere close to that. Again, everyone lands a 1 crore job is hokum.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees are high. The tuition fee especially seems a lot. Other fees like the mess, internet, and co-curricular fees are reasonable. Scholarships and financial assistance are available for students. I opted for a scholarship that exempts me from paying tuition fees.
Campus Life
There aren't any good places, lucrative hotels or malls in Kharagpur to visit. So, the campus really has a lot to offer. We have societies on everything from dance reading to building autonomous vehicles (Those are a part of the research group though). The infrastructure is definitely one of the best in the country. The internet's pretty good too. The fests are 3 days of fun.
Hostel Facilities
I lived in a 3-occupied room in my first year. It might seem claustrophobic to many, but the rooms were spacious in the hall I was alloted. Other halls, the older ones have smaller rooms to offer which is compensated by their rich hall culture. The hall (hostels are called halls here) is a place where the grooming of an individual takes place. You get to learn a lot and in that process, have fun and build strong bondings with both your batchmates and senior. The mess, however, well the name speaks for it.
