Course Curriculum Overview
IITs are considered as the apex of Indian Education for Engineering and so is their curriculum, which is why i chose this curriculum and branches don't matter as much as in IITs as it does in other colleges which furthures strengthened my decision. The curriculum prepares you quite well for real world applications and further academic pursuits. The curriculum can become more advances and relevant. The frequency of exams are managable and their difficulty is doable is enough time is spent in advance.
Internships Opportunities
Numerous internship opportunities are available in the college. Some of the companies that come are Optiver, Morgan Stanely, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, Google, Jane Street, Adobe, Bain and Co etc with stipends going up to 300000 per month. To get into such companies, a good C.V. with projects, skills and a good CGPA is required.
Placement Experience
The placement situation at IIT KGP is one of th e best among Engineering Colleges in India. With an average package of around 2200000 and overall placement percentage of around 80 (B.Tech+M.Tech). Students become eligible for placement either if they get PPO(Pre Placement Offer) from the company they are interning in in the 5th semester or when they are in the 7th semester when placement season begins. Around 1800 offers and 400 PPOs were made in phase 1 which includes 25 international offers. There were around 400 companies that visited. The highest offer was 21400000. Top profiles are Software, Data, Finance, Consulting, Quant and Core.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee structure per year (2 semesters) is as follows: GENERAL CATEGORY: Tuituion Fees-200000 Hostel Fees-88000 INCOME UNDER 800000: Tuition Fees:66000 Hostel Fees:88000 INCOME UNDER 100000: Tuition Fees:0 Hostel Fees:88000 MERIT CUM MEANS SCHOLARSHIP: All students enrolled in B.Tech,M.tech,B.Arch,M.Sc,BS courses (except SC and ST who are eligible forpost matric scholarshipof their respective state governments)are eligible for this scholarship. All tuition fees are waivered but other fees have to be paid. Max 25% of admitted students in the institute can avail this scholarship.A student can only take one scholarship at a time regardless of the source. To be eligible, the following conditions have to be met: 1)Student has to meet the merit criterion.(60% in Boards and 7.00 CGPA) 2)Parent/Guardian has to meet the means criterion. 3)No disciplinary action taken or pending against him from the preceeding year for renewal. Other scholarships from external sources can also be availed if not eligible for this one.
Campus Life
There are 2 Major Fests in the college namely Kshitij (Tech Fest) and Spring Fest (Cultural Fest) along with many other small fests that happen from time to time. These generally happen during January or February. There are also many other events such as Illumination (Diwali) and Hall Days. The library contains almost every piece of literature thst you are looking for according to your study need. Classrooms are well lit and spacious consisting of a screen and projector in every room and A.C. in some select classes. Almost every sport is offered on campus and there are sports fests as well. There are also inter college and inter hostel tournaments for every sport offered. There are too many student run social groups and clubs to list here and they are of various domains such as drama, finance, coding etc. They elevate a students social life and also their hobbies. Sometimes they also help in the students C.V. There is also a student portal which is uesed for official college info that is hassle free.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facility is great and rooms vary from hostel to hostel. The rooms range from single to triple sharing. There are fans, wardrobes and beds that come with every room. Meal quality is average with non veg being served 3 days a week. A new menu is given each month. There is no such registration process for hostels and I have already mentioned the hostel fees before.
Admission
Since I was interested in getting into an IIT from class 11, and IIT KGP was the only college that gave the best branch to college ratio among all other IITs that I was eligible for based off my rank. The admission process for my college for B.TECH involves JOSAA, a counselling system for all government engineering colleges in India where the eligibility criteria is based off JEE ADVANCED rank. Since you can only select one college through JOSAA, the only one i selected was this as this was the only one I was alotted based off my rank. The cutoff for my college is around 12000 for General Male and 20000 for General Female. This increases for other categories like SC ST OBC etc.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio is around 1:100. In most cases the faculty student relationship is quite normal, leaning more to the casual side, but that varies from faculty to faculty. and they are very approachable. No faculty is particularly disliked. There are 1-2 class tests, 1 midsem and 1 endsemper semester. The difficulty is quite relative and varies between students.Very few students fail. The course curriculum is not very relevant.
Night Life
Inside the extremely massive campus, there is no curfew and due to Kharagpur being a village, not much is available outside the campus. However there is a curfew for leaving campus. There are many well known restaurants and cafes like KFC, Dominos, Subway, Keveters etc which are open till 11pm or 1am. There are also gyms in every hostel and also a public open for all gym with a paid memebership. Library closes by 12am usually but becomes open 24x7 during exam week. It is extremely safe to roam around at night except a few dogs whichh mught run after you but that is very rare, in my experience at least.
