Kalyani Government Engineering College - [KGEC], BE, Electronics & Communication Engineering

Remarks

In my honest opinion Kalyani Government Engineering College offers a decent course in a healthy environment with above average placement facility without putting a dent in guardians bank balance.

Entrance Preview

I ranked 1307 in UR category in WBJEE in 2007 and got admitted to KGEC as a B.Tech student, I chose electronics and communication. I had options like IEM/Techno India or Heritage but I wanted a Govt. college due to peeferable fee structure.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

KGEC has 5 streams in B.Tech and MCA with great placement records but I would say the University Curriculum is not good enough for research unless the student takes personal ownership. There are IT, CSE, ECE, EE, ME courses predefined by WBUT now renamed as MAKAUT.

Internships Opportunities

Not Applicable but vocational training is a part of the curriculum. I did mine in signals and systems from Indian Railways, Kharagpur.

Placement Experience

3.5

Most of the students from Computer science, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, MCA and even Electrical Engineering get placed in different IT companies like Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, ATOS. Mechanical Engineering students get placed in MN Dastur and Co. Vedanta etc. Quite a few students from our 2011-12batch of EE got placed in WBSEDCL. Also a few students opted for M.Tech through GATE.

College Events

3

Annual festival with robotics events, quizes, movie making competetion, computer gaming, cultural festivals along with inter department as well as inter hostel outdoor and indoor games. There are 5 different hostels including one separate for first year students and one for girls. There are huge grounds, badminton and volleyball courts. KGEC has zero tolerance for ragging but I must say the canteen needs to be improved a lot. There are library and labs too.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Very much feasible, mine was Rs. 6000/- tution fee only per semester excuding nominal exam, lab fees etc.KGEC is a government engineering college affiliated to West Bengal University of Technolgy, now renamed as Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology.

Fees and Financial Aid

Fees are not too high, scholarship available for poor but meritorius and reserved category students from state govt. As far as i know.

Campus Life

4

Gender ratio is poor in core engineering subjects like mechanical or electrical but decent in IT or CSE. Workshops and seminars are organized frequently. I graduated 4 years back when only hall days and annual techfest were celebrated but now i came to know from social media sites that photography, movie clubs are being set up by students. Students come from various social strata but nobody faces hardship due to ethnicity, political or religious beliefs.

Hostel Facilities

3

There are 5 hostels in total including one separate hostel for girls and one separate hostel for first year students. Rooms are on double sharing basis. There are ample rooms for all students. Canteen in hostels need improvement but there are common room with indoor games, badminton or volleyball court, hall day celebration which is a small scale annual fest for whole college. Their is no ragging and seniors are quite helpful. Conveyance to Kalyani station needs improvement though.

Alumni/Alumna

Alumni network is not very strong I admit but they are trying to improve it, alumni meets are held and they are helpful undoubtedly.

Exam Structure

Semester based 10 point gradation structure. There are 8 semesters for all Bachelor of Technology courses and 6 semesters for Masters in Computer Application course and 4 semesters for M.Tech courses. There are periodic classroom evaluation though named surprise tests.

Faculty

3.5

The faculties are well experienced in teaching and Decently knowledgable. Some of them has IIT background and most of them are doctorates. Sometimes I felt a need for different approches for students who are willing to go forward in research and not looking for placements.

I’d rate HIT’s placement opportunities as 7.5/10 overall. It’s very good for CSE, IT, and ECE, decent for Electrical and core branches, and improving every year with more companies visiting and better preparation programs. If you’re skilled and consistent — especially in coding, communication, and aptitude — you’ll almost certainly get placed before graduatin

7th semester is when the students get to sit for placements. I am not sure about the total no of companies visited but I am aware of the name of few companies like IBM Infosys Wipro Capsitech Tech Mahindra cognizant etc . Mostly the girls are 100 percent placed cause there is diversity hiring. Mass recruiters is what visit our campus mostly.. I personally would look for a job after graduation highest package offered displayed by college is 75 lpa but I don't think so it is real. Maybe someone had worked hard and got placed off campus. On campus highest isbi guess 12-14 lpa

Course Curriculum Overview:

- I choose Data Science as it is new to my college when comparing with the other branches. The curriculum is just okay it is not per industry standards but if students deep drives in each aspects then they are likely to crack GATE exams. - The whole curriculum needs and improvement from the very 1st Year and removal of irrelevant subjects like Discrete Mathematics, Electonics, Biology for IT branches are required. - Semester exams are conducted every 6 months and CTs are conducted every 2 months
