Remarks
I chose to attend Loreto for the very simple reason that it was one of the most reputed colleges of Kolkata. It had an all-India rank of 18 in NIRF in the year 2017. I wanted to be a part of the convent environment. It is known to have a well-reputed and highly educated staff of teachers. It had about 20 societies and was rich in co-curricular activities-something which was very important to me. I was also excited by the annual inter-college fest that they organized as well as the departmental fest which occurred each year. Loreto was also known to participate in a large number of fests held by other colleges. It also was a host to a number of seminars about various environmental issues. There were also good placement statistics which I read from various student reviews on online websites which made it all the more impressive.
Course Curriculum Overview
We were the last batch which followed the 1+1+1 course structure. I studied Economics Honors. The faculty was very educated and were friendly and approachable. Classes were held regularly and in a disciplined manner. Student to teacher ratio was 25:1, but the way we were taught felt like 1:1. Selection exams were held before the main exams so as to prepare us well from before. We even had class tutorials which varied according to the teachers.
Placement Experience
Usually, there are placements from Loreto College. However, the batch of 2020 suffered bad luck due to Covid and everything becoming online. Other than those who were interested in placements, the majority chose to pursue higher studies in different institutions here and all over India.
Fees and Financial Aid
The total fees were about 33000 and we made payments quarterly. However, I am not aware of the details of scholarships or financial assistance available, since I did not avail them. Those who are interested to know more about these can always approach the college office.
Campus Life
Loreto had a very rich co-curricular life. We had an annual inter-college fest-Samagam, organized by all of our cultural societies. we have about 20 of them, each headed by a President, Vice-President, and Treasurer. There are also annual departmental education fests, quizzes, competitions etc. The opportunities for participating in co-curricular here are ample in nature. We also have an annual Christmas pageant, an Open fete day, teachers day, independence day etc.
Interview Experience
Admission was on the basis of merit. There was also a waiting list. A personal interview was conducted by the HOD and the Principal, all of whom were very friendly to us, young novices. The interview questions were mainly about our reasons, for studying economics and our past results.
