Entrance Preview
National Institute of Technology (NIT) Karnataka was one of the best and renowned autonomous college for M-Tech in South India. It has a track record of the good placement, good studies as well as decent tuition fees. I have written GATE exam for getting admission in NITK Surathkal. My GATE score was above the cutoff score in general category. Through counselling, I got into Power and energy system (PES) of EEE branch . I was having hands-on experience on the hardware projects, so opted for the renewable energy systems and their optimal control as my areas of interest.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum for the M.Tech was well balanced and divided into 2 years (4 semesters). First year was mainly focused on the all the basic fundamentals of engineering such as Maths, power systems, renewable energy, energy audit, control theory, HVDC and power electronics. Apart from the above, other cross functional/interdisciplinary courses were also included as an optional in order to broaden the thought process 2nd year was mainly focused on the major project based upon the area of interest as well as the respective guide's area of expertise. There was an audit course on the seminar where we need to give the presentation on the work done during internship (whether in-house or outside college). The project consists of both hardware and software based to have an insight view into the application of the present research area in the field. The overall learning from the internship and in the project was amazing since it gives a glimpse of industry operation and the level of commitment to the work. At the end of every 2 months, progress on the project was monitored to keep track of the progress. At the end of each semester (i.e 3rd and 4rth semester), presentation followed by the report submission before the panel of expertise members happened to get the credit allowed for that course.
Internships Opportunities
During my tenure in NITK, there were internships available with/without stipend. Companies comes to campus , conduct interviews for candidates and after consolidation with the dept., they release the internship letter with necessary details.Very few people got the institute stipend based upon the recommended else college provides necessary documents to apply for the internships outside with self-effort. I have done internship in MANIT Bhopal on fuel cell, where I was there in a hardware lab to learn and understand the basic working of Fuel cell, its process flow and its operation, safety guidelines in different cases at utmost priority. It gives an overall view of working of fuel cell and its control followed by its operation and maintenance.

Fee Structure And Facilities
I was staying in hostel and the tuition fee was economical as compared to other college fees since it is government college. It was approx 65000 INR per semester inclusive of hostel fees also.. The examination registration fee and other expenses such as library fee, Xerox fees, and sports related expenses were separate.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions
In the admission form, there used to be information about the loan to be provided for buying books, laptops and other expenses, but I have never availed it.
Campus Life
The campus of NITK Surathkal was full of lush green and well planned and maintained. There used to be a lot of plantation drive used to happen from time to time to maintain the greenness inside the campus. Hats off to the office staffs and the workers who took pain in maintain it. There is a lawn near to every building which makes it a litter free campus. The ration of boys to girls were 60:40 ration which keeps on changing from year after year. There used to be a good mixture of different culture as students from all every state of India used to come here and complete their studies .The institute has a private beach fully maintained. Most of the events, fests used to conduct over there. As mentioned above, there used to be a lot a of activities throughout the year , which keeps the young minds creative and evolving. The activities were on Indian level and students from different colleges of different region used to participate which is in increase the completion level to a new level.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel rooms were in good condition and well maintained from time to time. The food was good for all region people. There was lot of varieties of food to choose from and the timing was proper. The hygiene and the quantity provided at the rate was commendable from the college side. Students used to go in queue for lunch and breakfast. The hostel environment was good and it’s mixed of different culture, giving scope for everyone to evolve and progress in their career path. The hostel timings were strict both for boys and girls, hence at night time there used to be very less interference from outside people and disturbance within campus.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni/seniors were very helpful in transition from the school to the college to the job level .Seniors used to do frequent interactions with us so that we will have friendly and cooperative environment in the campus and should stand next to each other in case of any external threat. In hostels as well as for the regular day scholar, seniors guided us for the exams, lab viva voice and many other tasks which were completely new for us. There is a wide network of the alumni of the NITK Surathkal which helped us a lot during our campus placement preparation as well as for joining the job on the first day.
Exam Structure
At the joining year, the exams were bit hectic since they were less time between papers, leaving behind no break/ time for the preparation for the next exam. In our second year,we got freed from the exams as it was mainly focusing on the project/research. The IT labs were chilled ones as physical activities was bare minimum but at workshops and other labs were hectic at times because we need to perform the experiments on the spot at lab and need to submit the lab folder completed on the same day. But the learning from this lab were awesome, which also taught us to manage the time well also.
