Course Curriculum Overview
I chose Mtech Thermal Engineering because I was interested in thermal subjects like Fluid mechanics, Heat transfer, CFD. The Curriculum is pretty decent and it does covers the fundamentals and advanced topics of the particular subject but it could be better in terms of imparting practical and industrial knowledge. The exams that are held in NITK are competitive and requires a good understanding of the subject. You simply cannot cram and get good marks in exam. You have to know the proper implementation of that particular formula or theory.
Fees and Financial Aid
For General and OBC category per year fees will be around 180000. For SC/ST it is around 90000. The fees keeps on increasing every year by roughly 5-10%. In MTech we used to MHRD scholarship of 12,400 per month. For SC/ST student there are other scholarships as well.
Campus Life
Campus Life in NITK is something which I will forever cherish. The campus is serene and lush green located near Arabian sea. We have loads of extracurricular stuff going on every month. We have tech fest called ENGINEERS and cultural fest called INCIDENT. These two fests happen once every year. There are lots of sports tournaments like Inter NIT, PG cup, Inter hostel, Researchers tournament etc.
Admission
After GATE exam, I applied to almost all top NITs like NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, NIT Warangal, NIT Calicut etc during CCMT counselling . I had also applied in IIT Dhanbad in COAP counselling. I got IIT Dhanbad in 8th round. I spoke to my coaching Sir, he had advised me to go for top 3 NITs rather than IIT Dhanbad. Since these three NITs are well established and offer better placement opportunities as compared to IIT Dhanbad which is relatively a new IIT. One needs to qualify GATE exam to get a shot at taking admission in IITs/NITs. Once you qualify the GATE exam you can then look at specific colleges cutoff for admission. I got NIT Surathkal in special round 1 which was held after 3 regular rounds. I preferred NIT Surathkal as compared to other NITs since its considered in top 3 NITs and also it's near my home as compared to NIT Trichy.
Faculty
Overall I felt faculties are good and supportive in Mechanical department atleast. I can't say about other departments. There are many good faculties like Ranjith M, Anish S, Gnanasekaran etc. Coming to the exams, we have two exams per semester. Mid sem and End sem. Mid sem will be of 50 marks while End sem will be of 100 marks. Grading is relative. In MTech thermal we had 18 students and everyone had passed. The lowest CGPA was 6.2 around.
Night Life
There are no restriction to roam in campus at any time. We have two Gyms for workout. We also have Student Activity centre called SAAC. It's an open theater area which is used during some fests or live streaming of some important cricket match. We have Nandini store where students usually go to have tea and chill. Similarly we have Nescafe where you can sit with your friends and grab a coffee.
