Remarks

Great place if you want to study engineering in unconventional way. Where you would work both in class as well in workshop. A place which would make you work hard also open a gateway for great career.

Entrance Preview

I gave IIT JEE entrance exam and score All India rank of 4052. Couple of reason for choosing MERI. 1. At my rank i cannot get anything i like in any IIT. 2. Mechanical and electrical engineering always fascinated me and this seem perfect choice providing me both the experience. 3. Market scenario was bad in 2001 when i joined the program and marine engineering seem safe bet.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

My course didn't offered elective and custom suited to make us marine engineer. MERI course curriculum is well designed to make us perfect Marine engineer by giving us both both practical and theoretical knowledge about all kind of Vessel. Unlike other courses where studies usually lag behind market , ours was in line with market experience. In fact when i joined my first ship i had studied about almost every technology present on that oil Tanker. Beside course sharpen our anyltical mind in such a way that 10 year down the line all my batch mates are excelling in different fields.

Internships Opportunities

Part of curriculum was getting internship at port of kolkata. We learn about both support vessel and port handling machine. At my time we were not paid but now students are getting their internship on Vessels and paid good amount.

Placement Experience

4.5

All of my batch mate were placed by the time we finished our engineering. In addition My institute has very close knit alum which support each other not at start of our career but life long.

College Events

4.5

We have annual college Festival planned and organised by students. Beside we have various sport meet including representing our institute in various IIT's. We also had model making and technical paper presentation which help us develop creativity in the technical fields.

Fee Structure And Facilities

For first three year we paid Rs 36,000.00 and in final year we paid Rs 45,000.00. This fees include lodging and boarding. I believe this is amazingly low.

Fees and Financial Aid

I only remember couple of scholarship which was offered by oil major Shell and shipping company Chelaram. I didnt availed any scholarship.

Campus Life

4.5

We had some event every month and more important we are always encouraged to compete with other schools. MERI is ideal place offering opportunity to identify your interest and work on it.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

Hostel were well equipped and I had lot of nice experience of my stay in hostel. Food was good but still not same like home cooked food. In wither case hostel mess is managed by student in themselves.

Alumni/Alumna

Very close knit Alum and well spread both in career choice as well geographically. I have been supported by Alum 10 year latter in Netherlands in career post MBA.

Exam Structure

Exams were nicely segregated. In such a manner that we have enough time to involve in extra curricular activates but still keep our focus in technical studies.

Faculty

4

Faculty in MERI is very different than your average engineering college. Almost every teacher (we call them engineering officer) was cheif engineer on some kind of Vessel. We gained immensely from the life experience.

Placement Experience:

Campus Placements starts after 6th semester and majorily mass recruiters visit the campus and there are more opportunities for the cor branchs as compared to the non core because of the presence of many industries in the nearby areas. For this year, 12lpa is the highest placement in Commvault but the total placement is only around 50-60%, so my plan is to try getting off campus opportunities by the end of my 3rd year

The placements of of the college is okay okay , it's is 4 -5 LPA, but in previous year the placements percentage is not much good than the more previous year , if you not get placements then you can apply for off campus. But if you gained all skills according to requirments of the company's then you get easly placed.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Personally i opted for electrical and electronics instead of the branch of my choice is because my scores were not enough to secure a seat in CSE. But EEE is pretty cool as well for those willing to grow in this branch. Our curriculum exposes us to the rapidly growing sectors in the industry and educates us of all we need to know about the course in depth. If you want to continue ahead in a research field, this Institute is the most supportive. The exam questions are also relevant enough and considering we only need to actually stress over end semesters, its fair enough per semester. It would be better if our professors removed the attendance criteria rest im fine with everything else
