Lady Irwin College, B.SC. HOME SCIENCE

Remarks

Bad remarks the college life is hectic as many subjects and practicals of each subject has to be studied that does not leave one with a lot of time. This course is not very well known in India so getting a very lavish job where one can earn in laths is difficult sometimes few teachers can be very difficult to handle.

Entrance Preview

Admission in the college happens through 12th percentage the cut-off generally is not very high even if you score 60% you are likely to get admission in the college. I had home science as a subject in my senior school i loved the subject and that developed my inclination towards home science lady Irwin college is asia's best college in home science.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

Home science has 5 major streams, Human Development, Communication and Extension, Food and Nutrition, Fabrics and Apparels, Resource Management. One has to study around 8 subjects including major and minor subjects. The minor subjects do not require a lot of preparation but major subjects being new and not in lines with Science, Commerce or Arts subjects studied in school days need some in-depth study. In 1st year the subjects are compulsory whereas from 2nd year one has to choose one major and two minor subjects from the 5 streams. The subjects are interesting and engaging the course allows to learn many new things that will make life simpler.

Internships Opportunities

Every student has to do a 8 days internship after 2nd year. The students are supposed to find the organization for internships on their own. The stipend depends on the organization. Teachers can refer few students to their contacts but not all the students get a chance to do their internship their. The internship can be done in any state of the country as many hostlers wish to do the internship in their home towns. This is a brief exposure to the job world.

Placement Experience

3

There is no placement cell per say in the college so companies do not come to college. Students have to look for jobs on their own. But for few students teachers refer them to their contacts. The only drawback is that after just doing B.Sc. a great job cannot be expected. This course requires M.Sc. in whatever field that suits the student. I did my Bachelors in Home Science and Masters in Human Development, after which I got a good job. The package though was nowhere if compared to other MBA or Engineer students. If money is what motivates you then this course is not for you. If learning and good work attracts you then please go for this course. Mostly all the students get jobs after the course, of course if they want to do a job.

College Events

4

The college organizes the following events:1. Freshers- for 1st year students at both students and teacher level. So 1st year students enjoy two parties.2. Orientation programme- for 1st year students.3. Parents Day- where 1st year students perform and they call their family members. 4. Fest- A three day fest is organized every year where groups from other colleges participate and many competitions are held during these three days where any student can participate. Some celebrity or band is invited to perform on one of the nights. 5. Sports day- is organized every year in which groups are formed and students participate in various sports events.6. Founders Day- is celebrated every year. On this day meritorious students in academics and co-curricular are given awards. Some celebrity is invited and a well established alumni is given award.7. Farewell- Like freshers farewell for 3rd year students also happen at students and teachers level.8. Pre-fest- A pre-fest event is organized every year just for the students to dance and enjoy.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is very feasible given the college is a govt college one has to only pay around 10 to 12K a year the course is reasonable with respect to the fees but one has to spend a lot on files and projects. That is a major drawback for students coming from disadvantaged families but then they get scholarships and so the fees get reduced the fee has to be submitted twice in a year apart from the fees, one time examination fee has to be given.

Fees and Financial Aid

The college provides scholarship for students from disadvantaged sections. Proper panel selects the students for interview based on a form they have to fill, their parents income slips and one on one interaction with the students. Verification of the parents income happen and based on the need scholarship is provided. Not all the students get 100% scholarship. It depends on the need and the panel.

Campus Life

4

The campus life is awesome if one is able to make good friends then studying in a girls college is the most amazing thing that can happen in anyone's life many workshops, seminars and parties keep happening in the college the timings of the college is 8:40 to 5:40 but students can stay late till 7 in the evening.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

The hostel facility is pretty well and the food depends on the vendor preparing the food but more or less the food is edible. There is a canteen in the college and many delicious eating joints just a 5 minute walk from the college. The hostel rooms are big and spacious rooms are cleaned every day students have to share the washrooms but mostly they are clean all this also depends on the student herself the fees of the hostel is not that high- around 40k in a year there are enough hostel seats.

Alumni/Alumna

Every year alumni meets happen in the college where students get a chance to meet their seniors and alumnus get a chance for reunion apart from this there are facebook page and linkedIn page through which one can be connected with alumnus seniors in the college are generally good and helpful no ragging happens in the college.

Exam Structure

Two exams happen every semester one internal and the other one is final both theory and practicals happen for three hours. This course in professional and requires a lot of time of the student. But it is so enjoyable that the student will not regret exams are not very difficult and passing the exams are pretty easy the course is hectic.

Faculty

4.5

The faculty of my college is superb. They are very helpful, knowledgeable and approachable. Generally a student in other colleges, as I have heard from many of my friends, does not share a very amicable relationship with their teachers. But in Lady Irwin College teachers are more as friends. But of course this comes with a pinch of its own hardships. If you are not working hard and miss your classes then the teachers will never be there for you. Otherwise the faculty is always ready to explain and help if need be. There are a few not so knowledgeable and smart teachers, but majority of the faculty is well qualified and are experts in their subjects.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The core subjects are very well divided, the main problem arises with the other additional subjects which requires efforts as same as the other subject even though they don't hold any importance as such. Maybe reducing other subject or making them practical based instead of theory based would be helpful.

Many prestigious companies like delloite, accenture have held various placement sessions in DRC and it's overall a good to place for companies to get high skilled students. The placement cell is very active too which makes it possible for our college to get many internships and placements opportunities.

There are many different kinds books present in library like literature,Hindi, Chemistry, Maths, zoology, biology, botany, political science, History Geography the books are only alloted till 12pm and only for 15 days after that you will be charged if book is not returned Sports and Extracurricular are good but classrooms are not that great most projectors in classrooms don't work . There are many good societies in college like jamini the art society and others but joining has caused students to leave their classes which affects them academically

The placements cell Avenues regarding the placement offers coming to the college. Major companies of the job market come to the campus for recruitment like KPMG, deloitte, zepto, EY, ZS Associates and many more. The students from the final year itself gets eligible for placements. Around 30-40% students get the palcements through the placement drive. The highest package during the last palcement season was around 18 to 20LPA, while the average was 7 to 8LPA. I will certainly go for higher studies in operational research.
