In case you are confused between NIT Surathkal's Information Technology and IIT BHU's Metallurgy, the decision actually comes down to what you desire more—the subject or the college name.

Key Comparison Table

NIT Surathkal is ranked 13 for BTech by NIRF, whereas, IIT BHU has been ranked 11 for the same. As the NIRF ranking indicates both these institutes are among the most sought after institutes for engineering in India. NIT Surathkal offers a BTech and MTech program for IT. IIT BHU offers a BTech, MTech, and Dual Degree in Metallurgy.

NIT Surathkal:

Admission: Admission to the BTech IT program at NIT Surathkal is based on JEE Main score. In 2019 the closing cutoff for IT at the institute was 3731 (Other State), 7280 (Home State). The first-year course fee for BTech is 4.94 lakhs.

Placements: In the 2019 placement drive NIT Surathkal had a 100% placement rate.

  • The highest package offered was 39 LPA. The average package was 14.15 LPA.
  • A few of the top recruiters for BTech IT were Axis Bank, Byjus, Deloitte, Microsoft, Oracle India, Tesco, Cisco System, Oyo.

IIT BHU:

Admission: IIT BHU takes admission for BTech Metallurgy based on the performance of the students in JEE Advanced. The closing cutoff for Metallurgy in 2019 was 6026. The course costs around 8.67 lakhs.

Placement: In IIT BHU Metallurgy, almost all students get placed but all are not placed in core companies.

  • In 2019 the highest and average CTC received by the students of IIT BHU was 1.53 Crore and 8.19 LPA.
  • Some of the major recruiters at IIT BHU are Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Uber, D Shaw, Google.

Both the colleges come under top tier institutes in India. But if we compare core job placements, NIT Surathkal IT has more options than IIT BHU Metallurgy. In IIT BHU, there are many opportunities available for a student. They may get placed in financial, management, or software firms if they have the required skills. But the IT branch has an upper hand over metallurgy in core jobs.

IIT BHU also has an option for branch change. So, if one works hard in college academics, then he/she may upgrade their branch. But branch change becomes quite competitive as many will compete for top branches. Some students also have regional preferences.

But ultimately, the choice depends on the interest of the student. If you go by the placement prospects in IT and Metallurgy, then NIT Surathkal IT will be a better option.
