Hello there! The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur is the oldest IIT, established in 1950 but starting in 1951. Since then, the Department of Electrical Engineering has been actively engaged in teaching and research, equipped with modern laboratories and an excellent faculty. This is a core branch, and the department offers two undergraduate programs: electrical engineering and instrumentation engineering. Placement and job opportunities are outstanding! The career development center works hard to ensure that everyone gets placed. A large number of companies visit the campus for recruitment starting in December. All final year students can apply to companies in their respective fields. Generally, the packages and number of job opportunities in software development and data analytics are higher compared to core branches like electrical, civil, and mechanical engineering. For software roles, packages are around 15 LPA, while for core branches, it's about 8-10 LPA.

The companies that visited the campus during the placement season include:

  • BHEL
  • Ashok Leyland
  • HPCL
  • Mahindra & Mahindra
  • John Deere
  • L&T Construction

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering (Power and Automation) offers outstanding placement prospects, with an average package around 15 lakhs and the highest reaching up to 4 crores, thanks to a robust internship system that can lead to pre-placement offers. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Mining Engineering has strong outcomes too, with an average package of 20-25 lakhs and approximately 80% of students getting placed, but the highest package is slightly lower, around 3 crores. If you're inclined towards tech and coding roles, IIT Delhi might be a better fit due to its diverse opportunities and internship pay. However, if you're passionate about the mining sector and want a slightly higher average package, IIT Kharagpur could be your choice. Ultimately, it depends on your career interests—go for IIT Delhi if you want a blend of core and software jobs, while IIT Kharagpur suits those focused on mining.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering Power and Automation offers a more versatile curriculum that bridges core engineering and coding, making it appealing for those looking to enter diverse job markets, while IIT Kharagpur's Mining Engineering provides a solid foundation in a specialized field with strong placement stats. With IIT Delhi having higher average salaries and a broader range of companies recruiting, it seems to edge out in terms of placements. However, if someone is passionate about mining and wants a focused career in that sector, IIT Kharagpur could be the better fit. Personally, I would lean towards IIT Delhi for the wider opportunities and vibrant campus life, but if you're into mining, IIT Kharagpur could be your calling.

IIT Delhi B.Tech in Electrical Engineering Power and Automation offers a strong ROI with an average package of around 15 lakhs and the potential for high internships, making it financially appealing despite higher tuition fees. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Mining Engineering presents a slightly better average package of 20-25 lakhs and a competitive placement rate of about 80%, which is attractive given its lower tuition fees of 1 lakh for general students. If you’re inclined towards electrical engineering and coding roles, IIT Delhi is a solid choice, but if you prefer mining engineering and want a better financial deal overall, IIT Kharagpur might be the smarter option.
