IIT Delhi.

Reasons include:

  • Better professors.
  • Higher calibre of your future batchmates.
  • Superior placement opportunities (trust me, many multinational corporations like Samsung Korea and Rubrik U.S. don’t visit IIT Kharagpur, but they frequently come to IIT Delhi to hire students for internships and placements).
  • More opportunities for pursuing further studies at top-tier international universities.

Additionally, IIT Delhi is situated in the heart of Delhi (specifically South Delhi) and is conveniently close to the Delhi airport. There are plenty of restaurants, malls, theatres, and bars to enjoy during weekends.

In contrast, the nearest city to IIT Kharagpur is Kolkata, which is about 140 km away. The closest decent restaurant to IIT Kharagpur is a Domino’s outlet, and it doesn’t even deliver pizzas inside the campus.

Also, while I usually don’t put much stock in QS Rankings, you can rely on them when they rank IIT Delhi higher than IIT Kharagpur.

Cheers!

IIT Delhi offers a strong B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering with a robust curriculum that emphasizes real-world applications, particularly in AI/ML, and has a great reputation among recruiters like Amazon and Google for internships. The faculty is highly qualified and supportive, making for a solid learning environment. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Industrial Engineering provides a different focus that might appeal to those interested in operations and manufacturing, though the faculty and campus life may not be as highlighted in reviews.

Personally, I’d lean towards IIT Delhi for its superior curriculum and placement opportunities, especially if you’re passionate about tech. However, if you’re drawn more to industrial processes and prefer a slightly different engineering focus, IIT Kharagpur could be a good fit.

Instrumentation Engineering is regarded as a solid branch, and the curriculum is quite engaging. In fact, many students find it more aligned with their needs than even Electrical Engineering.

Here are some key points to consider:

  • There’s a slight disadvantage in non-core placements compared to IIT Delhi. Companies like Bain and AT Kearney don’t recruit from IIT Kharagpur, but the remaining opportunities in consulting and other non-core areas are quite promising. For instance, last year, Deutsche Bank had no interns from IIT Delhi, while it took five from IIT KGP. Statistics can vary, though.
  • Consulting firms typically don’t hire during the placement season at IIT Kharagpur. They aren’t bound by the institute's administrative processes. Instead, they usually recruit in August and September. Their hiring processes resemble those at other institutes, but they allow students with PPOs from their internships to participate in their selections, which isn’t common elsewhere.

This is only a slight advantage, but it’s worth noting!

In my opinion, IIT Delhi for B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering has a stronger edge over IIT Kharagpur for B.Tech in Industrial Engineering when it comes to placements and internships. IIT Delhi attracts top tech companies like Amazon and Google, offering lucrative internships and projects that can significantly boost your resume. The intense curriculum and focus on AI/ML prepare you well for the competitive job market.

Conversely, while IIT Kharagpur also has good internship opportunities, the overall tech placement scene is more robust at IIT Delhi. If you're keen on a career in tech and want better job prospects, go for IIT Delhi; however, if you're more interested in industrial applications and management, IIT Kharagpur could be a good fit.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering comes with a higher fee structure, around 20 lakhs, but it offers strong internship opportunities with top companies like Amazon and Google, which can lead to better job prospects and ROI. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Industrial Engineering might have a simpler fee structure, but the opportunities in tech-focused internships are not as robust as IIT Delhi's. If you're looking for a career in tech, IIT Delhi is the smarter financial choice despite the initial cost, as the potential return on investment is significantly higher. However, if you prefer a broader industrial focus and potentially lower upfront costs, IIT Kharagpur could be a good fit.
