IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering (Power and Automation) offers a strong tie between core engineering roles and coding, making it attractive for diverse career paths. With an average package of around 15 lakhs and the potential for internships yielding up to 25 lakhs, it has excellent placement opportunities. Meanwhile, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering boasts an even higher average package of 20-25 lakhs, and a solid internship program with around 60-70% placement success. Both colleges have robust placement stats, but IIT Kharagpur edges ahead with slightly better averages and a wider range of internship offers. If you're inclined towards a blend of coding and engineering, choose IIT Delhi; if you prefer a robust mechanical background with better placement prospects, go for IIT Kharagpur.

For an AIR of 641, I couldn't get Electrical in Kanpur. I aimed for Mechanical at IITM, but ended up placing Electrical Power at IIT Delhi as an option, never thinking I would actually get it! But hey, it was destiny!

I found the course quite interesting, especially with:

  • Motors
  • Generators
  • Power systems

Even power electronics was fascinating!

IIT Delhi's Electrical Engineering (core) and Power and Automation are quite similar, with only a difference of about 3–4 courses.

  • There are departmental elective courses that you must complete as part of the degree requirements.
  • This means you can take courses from the IIT Delhi Electrical Engineering (core) curriculum.
  • Consequently, students in the Power and Automation program can become equivalent to those in the Electrical core.

In conclusion, there is essentially no difference between IIT Delhi's Electrical core and Power Automation. Additionally, IIT Delhi's Electrical program is ranked higher than IIT Kharagpur's Electrical and IIT Bombay's Mechanical programs.

Without any nonsense, here's the deal: it doesn't really matter what you choose; you'll end up with two main options after your B.Tech.

  • 1. If you stay in India, you'll likely pursue an MBA, UPSC, or IT.
  • 2. If you're thinking about going abroad for research or an MS, keep in mind that no research or corporate job is viable without some exposure to Computer Science.

The good news is that by choosing B.Tech in Electrical Engineering Power and Automation at IIT Delhi, you can easily pivot to CS after your B.Tech and for your MS abroad. Electrical Engineering at IIT is quite flexible and offers a wide range of courses that touch on various aspects of modern engineering, including Electronics, Computer Science, and Modern Physics. These courses will definitely help you refine your career choices later on.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering Power and Automation offers a unique blend of core engineering and coding, which is appealing if you’re inclined towards both fields. The campus life is vibrant with numerous fests like Rendezvous, and the placement stats are impressive, with top packages reaching 3-4 crores. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering has a well-structured curriculum that emphasizes internships, resulting in high placement rates and a slightly higher average package.

Both colleges have robust scholarship options, but IIT Delhi seems to have a more lively campus atmosphere. Personally, I'd lean toward IIT Delhi for its dynamic environment and excellent placement opportunities, especially if you enjoy a mix of technical and coding roles, while IIT Kharagpur is a great choice if you're solely focused on mechanical engineering and its applications.
