This isn't a one-size-fits-all question, so let's explore different aspects based on public opinion and observations:

  • Passion - If you're passionate about a particular stream, that's definitely the best choice for you!
  • Placement Packages - CS takes the crown here with a massive lead. Electrical Engineering and MnC are tied for second place.
  • Research - (Debatable) Biotechnology offers fantastic future research opportunities, but be prepared to possibly leave India to pursue them.
  • Jack of all - Engineering Physics covers a broader spectrum than other branches since it combines math, physics, and engineering.
  • MBA/Civil Services - For these paths, a lighter course is usually beneficial, allowing time for UPSC or CAT prep. Textile Engineering is the clear winner here, with Chemical Engineering coming in second.
  • Non-Core Jobs (Consulting/Finance…) - This is branch-independent. It largely depends on the applicant's portfolio. A good CGPA will certainly help!
  • Extracurriculars - This usually hinges on time management skills, but typically, Textile, Biotech, Chemical, and EP have an edge. Electrical can be tougher due to its heavy course load.

P.S. - Remember, you don’t choose your branch; your branch chooses you!

The choice between IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering Power and Automation and IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering ultimately hinges on your interests, aspirations, and career goals.

  • 1. If you're inclined towards jobs in the software and finance sectors, then Mathematics and Computing is the way to go. Students in Mathematics and Computing often secure some of the highest packages during placement season, right after Computer Science graduates at any IIT. Plus, there's substantial scope for higher studies. So, consider Mathematics and Computing at IIT Kanpur; you'll likely land a well-paying job in finance or software!
  • 2. If you're more interested in nano sciences, nano composites, or are simply research-oriented, then Metallurgy at IIT Bombay or Material Science at IIT Kharagpur would be good options.
  • 3. Avoid Textile at IIT Delhi if your ultimate goal is a job in the IT industry; you can reach that goal from various paths.
  • 4. Additionally, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering at IIT BHU are also worth considering.

In the end, it all boils down to your interests!

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering offers a strong return on investment, especially with its higher average package of 15 lakhs and impressive placement statistics, making it a lucrative choice for those inclined towards tech and coding jobs. While IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering has a slightly lower average package of around 20-25 lakhs, its diverse opportunities and slightly lower tuition fees (100,000 compared to IIT Delhi's higher fees) can be appealing for students interested in the biotech field.

However, considering the robust internship opportunities and scholarships at IIT Delhi, I’d recommend it for those prioritizing high ROI and placement prospects, while IIT Kharagpur could be better for students passionate about biotech, especially if they seek a slightly more affordable education.

IIT Delhi for B.Tech in Electrical Engineering Power and Automation offers a robust curriculum that bridges traditional engineering with tech jobs, making it attractive if you are leaning towards coding opportunities. The placement stats are impressive, with top packages reaching up to 4 crore and an average of around 15 lakhs, plus the vibrant campus life and numerous fests add to the overall experience.

On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur with its B.Tech in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering has an equally strong placement record, average packages around 20-25 lakhs, and a wide range of internship opportunities, but its focus is more specialized. Personally, if you're inclined towards a more versatile engineering career with solid coding prospects, I would recommend IIT Delhi, while IIT Kharagpur would be better if you're passionate about biotech and want to dive deep into that field.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering (Power and Automation) clearly has an edge in placements and internship opportunities compared to IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering. With IIT Delhi offering higher packages averaging around 15 lakhs and the highest reaching 3-4 crores, plus lucrative internship prospects that can lead to pre-placement offers, it's hard to overlook. On the other hand, while IIT Kharagpur also has strong placement records, with average packages around 20-25 lakhs, their highest packages are slightly lower and they seem to cater more towards startups and UPSC. If you're leaning towards a more tech-centric and financially rewarding career path, go for IIT Delhi. However, if you're passionate about biotech and don’t mind a slightly less lucrative outcome, IIT Kharagpur is a solid choice too.
