IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers a clear edge in placements and internships compared to IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Mining Engineering + M.Tech in Safety Engineering. At IIT Delhi, major firms like Google, Microsoft, and even quant-focused companies like Jane Street actively recruit, with impressive packages reaching up to 4 crores. The variety of companies visiting for internships also means broader opportunities for students. In contrast, while IIT Kharagpur has a reputable engineering program, the niche nature of Mining Engineering may limit its placement prospects and salary ceilings. If you're passionate about tech and mathematics, IIT Delhi is likely the better choice for high-paying job prospects, while those interested in mining and safety engineering might find IIT Kharagpur more suitable.

Joining IIT Kharagpur can be a great choice because it prepares you well for non-core placements. This IIT places a strong emphasis on ensuring its students secure jobs. Plus, you have the option to choose a minor course during your second year.

Here are some key points to consider:

  • Focus on non-core placements: IIT Kharagpur is known for its dedicated placement support.
  • Flexibility with minors: You can select a minor that complements your major, enhancing your skill set.
  • Opportunities for exploration: Students often find that diversifying their knowledge can open new career paths.

If you think you might get a second chance at JEE Advanced, remember that not everyone is successful in that endeavor. You can also join the Facebook group for JEE counselling 2016-17, where you can connect with thousands of IITians who can provide insights and guidance. IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing definitely offers a stronger ROI compared to IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Mining Engineering plus M.Tech in Safety Engineering. The average placement packages at IIT Delhi, especially from quant firms and tech giants, are significantly higher, with top offers reaching up to 4 crores, while Kharagpur's mining-related placements might not match that potential. The fees at IIT Delhi are around 1,00,000 per semester, but with numerous scholarships available, many students find it manageable.

In contrast, while Kharagpur also has its share of scholarships, the value for money in terms of future earnings seems skewed in favor of IIT Delhi. If you’re aiming for a lucrative tech or finance career, IIT Delhi is the smarter choice, but if you have a passion for mining and safety engineering, Kharagpur is still a solid option.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for high-paying roles in tech and finance, with impressive internships and placements, including offers from top quant firms like Jane Street. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Mining Engineering and M.Tech in Safety Engineering may not have the same level of placement opportunities in tech-heavy roles, as mining is a niche field with fewer high-paying companies compared to the broad tech landscape.

Campus life at IIT Delhi is vibrant, with numerous clubs and top-notch facilities, while IIT Kharagpur also has a good campus experience but may feel less energetic in comparison. Personally, I'd lean towards IIT Delhi for its stronger tech focus and placement records, especially if you enjoy mathematics and want to secure a high-paying job in a dynamic industry.

Let’s be honest here. Mining is probably not the branch you want to study.

Why are you doing engineering?

  • To get placements and a good package.
  • To learn something that fascinates you.
  • To follow the crowd.

These are the major three reasons.

What happens if you choose mining?

  • If you're not interested in the subject, you'll spend your first year trying to change branches (if you can). If not, you’ll be stuck with the second point.
  • Unable to change branches, you’ll start chasing positions of responsibility (POR) like crazy, joining different clubs to boost your non-core skills.
  • After four years, you might not want anything to do with mining. You won’t feel proud of your choice, and you'll end up focusing on non-core placements on campus.

Consider this:

  • If you don’t want to pursue engineering after four years and are eyeing analytics, consulting, or analyst roles.
  • If you’re thinking about an MBA from IIM.
  • If you want to explore a completely different field.

Once you choose mining, you’re stepping out of the engineering race and into a different competition—becoming everything that an engineer is not.

So, if you don’t care much about engineering, go for IIT KGP. Cracking JEE Advanced is tough, so if you made it, you might as well make the most of it!
