I assume by a "good branch" you mean good placements. When it comes to placements, every branch at IIT KGP is considered decent. Regarding salaries, there aren't many core companies recruiting for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MMT), but there are plenty of non-core (not related to your field) opportunities.

Let’s compare MMT with Mechanical Engineering:

  • Core Companies:
    • Mechanical Engineering has numerous core companies, including those in manufacturing.
    • MMT has fewer core companies available.
  • Non-Core Offers:
    • Even in Mechanical Engineering, non-core offers significantly outnumber core ones.
    • Placement salaries in core fields for most branches, except Electrical, tend to be lower compared to non-core fields.

Now, focusing on non-core jobs (which are 3x more important than core ones!):

  • The number of non-core offers for MMT and Mechanical Engineering is almost equal (considering only the older IITs).
  • These companies often have no connection to your branch and typically offer higher salaries than core positions.

So, in terms of non-core opportunities, you have a solid chance regardless of your choice!
