IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers a rigorous curriculum that leads to high-paying internships and placements, especially in tech and quant firms, with top packages reaching 4 crores. The tuition fees are manageable, with various scholarships available for students from lower-income backgrounds. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech + M.Tech in Chemical Engineering provides a structured path but may not match the ROI of IIT Delhi, especially in terms of tech-centric job opportunities. If you're passionate about mathematics and computing and aim for a high-tech career, IIT Delhi is the smarter financial choice. However, if you prefer a stable engineering discipline with a longer academic track, IIT Kharagpur could be a good fit.

Firstly, let me be clear: IIT DELHI IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN IIT KGP. Now, let's break it down:

1. PERCEPTION OF PEOPLE:

  • IITD > IIT KGP
  • MATH & COMPUTING ~ EE (approximately equal, but MNC has an edge over EE due to its closeness to CS)

2. JOB OPPORTUNITIES:

  • EE covers a broader field, both in software and hardware. MNC, on the other hand, leans more towards software computing.
  • So, EE ~ MNC (but MNC is still better than EE, again because of the CS connection to MNC)

3. ACCEPTABILITY IN OTHER FIELDS:

  • EE graduates can easily shift to various related fields since electrical courses are taken by many from other branches. MNC is mostly confined to maths and IT.
  • Therefore, EE > MNC

4. IN OTHER COLLEGES:

  • EE is an evergreen branch found in most engineering colleges. MNC is a “hybrid” branch introduced to meet the rising demand for CS! It’s not available in many colleges, which limits its acceptability elsewhere.
  • EE > MNC

5. RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES:

  • EE > MNC

6. ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT:

  • IITD > IIT KGP

So, the final decision is yours. Your own interests and priorities will also play a crucial role in your choice. Cheers!

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers exceptional career prospects, especially in tech and finance, with high-paying internships from quant firms and top tech companies, where placements are nearly guaranteed at around 93%. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech + M.Tech in Chemical Engineering may provide solid opportunities, but the focus is more traditional and likely less lucrative compared to the quant and tech-centric paths available at IIT Delhi. While both colleges have strong placements, the higher stipend ranges and diverse internship opportunities at IIT Delhi make it a more attractive option for anyone aiming for a high-impact career in technology or finance. If you love math and are tech-oriented, choose IIT Delhi; if you're more inclined toward engineering, IIT Kharagpur is still a solid choice.

I would suggest going for B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing at IIT Delhi! The faculty there is excellent. In comparison, the faculty at IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati isn't as strong.

Also, what's your rank?

IIT Delhi.

Reasons include:

  • Better professors.
  • The calibre of your future batchmates.
  • Placement opportunities (trust me, many multinational corporations like Samsung Korea and Rubrik U.S. don’t visit IIT Kharagpur, but regularly recruit from IIT Delhi for internships and placements).
  • Opportunities for pursuing further studies at top-tier international universities.

Additionally, IIT Delhi is located in the heart of Delhi (South Delhi, to be precise) and is conveniently close to the Delhi airport. There are plenty of restaurants, malls, theatres, and bars to enjoy on weekends.

In contrast, the nearest city to IIT Kharagpur is Kolkata, which is about 140 km away. The closest decent restaurant to IIT Kharagpur is a Domino’s outlet, and it doesn’t even deliver pizzas inside the campus.

While I usually don’t put much stock in QS Rankings, you can take their ranking of IIT Delhi over IIT Kharagpur seriously.

Cheers!
