Placements at IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing are outstanding! Like most quantitative companies, software firms actively recruit these students for internships and placements. MnC students receive solid exposure to Mathematics and Computer Science. Additionally, they are well-prepared with essential Electrical Core Courses, such as Digital Electronics and Computer Architecture, which allows some of them to apply to electrical core companies like Texas Instruments.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers a robust curriculum that leads to high-paying internships and placements, especially in tech and finance, with a stunning highest package of 4 crores from Jane Street. The fees are around 1,00,000 per semester, which is manageable due to various scholarships available for students from lower-income backgrounds. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering also has solid placements, but the highest packages tend to be lower, and while they do have scholarships, the financial aid may not be as accessible as at IIT Delhi.

Overall, if you're aiming for a strong ROI in tech or quant roles, IIT Delhi is the smarter choice, but if you have a passion for mechanical engineering and prefer a slightly more traditional engineering path, IIT Kharagpur could still be a great fit.

Students in the Dual Degree Maths and Computing program with a CS/IT focus tend to perform slightly better in placements. Those aiming for consulting jobs and preparing properly can land very high-paying positions. However, securing core sector jobs can be a bit more challenging. It's wise to diversify your options if you’re in this course!

As a placement representative for this branch in the final year, I can provide some insights on this topic.

  • Major companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung, etc., recognize this branch well and see no distinction between Mathematics and Computing (M&C) and Computer Science (CSE). The hiring process is identical for both.
  • For smaller IT firms, we sometimes need to put in extra effort to persuade them to include Mathematics and Computing students in their placement drives. Some are open to it, while others adhere strictly to their policies. Notably, companies like Deloitte offer job profiles exclusively for Mathematics and Computing students.
  • After joining, you'll likely be considered a strong candidate for Machine Learning and Data Science teams in these firms.
  • In terms of statistics, around 50 companies have visited this placement season to hire from this branch (and the number is still growing). For Computer Science, it's close to 60. Almost all students secure placements by the end of the season. The average package so far is 10.5 LPA.

There's a growing curiosity about this branch. During my internship at Sling Media (a Dish Network subsidiary), I was frequently asked about it.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers outstanding placement opportunities, especially in tech and finance sectors, with top quant firms like Jane Street offering packages up to 4 crores and internships starting at impressive stipends. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering has a solid reputation and good placement stats, but it generally doesn't match the high salary potential of quant and tech roles that IIT Delhi graduates often land. For students passionate about mathematics and looking to dive into high-paying tech or finance roles, IIT Delhi is a clear winner. However, if you prefer a broader engineering experience and are interested in traditional engineering roles, IIT Kharagpur is a great choice.
