IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers an edge in placements compared to IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Instrumentation Engineering. The rigorous curriculum at IIT Delhi equips students with strong problem-solving skills, making them highly sought after by top tech and quant firms, with internships often leading to impressive stipends of 3 to 4 lakhs per month, and even more for international offers. In contrast, while IIT Kharagpur also has good placement records, the quantitative and tech-centric focus of IIT Delhi's program tends to attract companies like Google and Jane Street more aggressively, resulting in higher packages, such as the 4 crore offer from Jane Street last year.

If you're passionate about mathematics and aimed at high-paying tech or finance roles, IIT Delhi would be the better choice, while IIT Kharagpur might be more suitable for those interested in a broader engineering approach.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes high-level mathematics and computer science, making it particularly attractive for those aiming for careers in tech, finance, and quant firms. The internship opportunities are stellar, with top companies like Microsoft and Jane Street actively recruiting, and last year's highest package hitting an astonishing 4 crore. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur’s B.Tech in Instrumentation Engineering, while also reputable, typically sees placements in engineering and manufacturing sectors, which might not match the financial and tech allure of IIT Delhi.

Personally, I would choose IIT Delhi for its vibrant campus life, exceptional faculty, and robust placement stats, especially if I were passionate about mathematics and computing. Students leaning towards engineering applications could consider IIT Kharagpur, but for the best overall experience and opportunities, IIT Delhi stands out.

Firstly, let me be clear: IIT DELHI IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN IIT KGP. Now, let's break it down:

1. PERCEPTION OF PEOPLE:

  • IITD >> IIT KGP
  • MATH & COMPUTING ~ EE (approximately equal, but MNCs tend to prefer MNC due to its closeness to CS)

2. JOB OPPORTUNITIES:

  • EE covers a wider field, both in software and hardware. MNC, on the other hand, is more focused on software computing.
  • So, EE ~ MNC (but MNC is still better than EE, again because of its proximity to CS)

3. ACCEPTABILITY IN OTHER FIELDS:

  • EE graduates can easily shift to various related fields, as electrical courses are taken by many students from other branches. MNC graduates are mostly limited to math and IT.
  • Thus, EE > MNC

4. IN OTHER COLLEGES:

  • EE is an evergreen branch, present in most engineering colleges. MNC is a "hybrid" branch created to meet the growing demand for CS! It's not offered in many colleges, which limits its acceptability elsewhere.
  • So, EE > MNC

5. RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES:

  • EE > MNC

6. ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT:

  • IITD >> IIT KGP

So, the final decision is yours. Your interests and priorities will also play a significant role in your choice. Cheers!

Instrumentation Engineering is generally viewed as a solid branch, and the curriculum is quite engaging. Many students find it more aligned with their needs than even Electrical Engineering.

  • There’s a slight disadvantage in non-core placements compared to IIT Delhi. For instance, Bain and AT Kearney don’t recruit from IIT Kharagpur, but other opportunities in consulting and non-core areas are quite promising.
  • Last year, Deutsche Bank didn’t have any interns from IIT Delhi, while it had five from IIT KGP. Statistics and figures do fluctuate.
  • Consulting firms typically don’t hire during the placement season at IIT Kharagpur. They operate outside the institute's administrative timeline, usually recruiting in August and September. Their hiring processes resemble those at other institutes, but they allow candidates with PPOs from internships to participate in their selection process, which is not common elsewhere.

It’s a slight edge, but definitely a pro!

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers an incredible ROI due to its high placement rates, with top companies like Jane Street offering packages that can reach up to 4 crores. The course is intense but prepares you well for lucrative roles in tech and finance, and scholarships are readily available to ease the financial burden. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Instrumentation Engineering also has solid placements but may not match the salary potential of IIT Delhi's program, especially in quant roles. If you love mathematics and want to dive into high-paying tech or finance careers, IIT Delhi is the smarter financial choice, while IIT Kharagpur might be better for those interested in instrumentation but seeking a more balanced academic experience.
