IIT Delhi.

Here are the reasons:

  • Better professors.
  • Higher calibre of your future batchmates.
  • Superior placement opportunities. Trust me, many multinational corporations like Samsung Korea and Rubrik U.S. don’t visit IIT Kharagpur, but they regularly come to IIT Delhi for internships and placements.
  • More opportunities for pursuing further studies at top-tier international universities.

Additionally, IIT Delhi is situated in the heart of Delhi (specifically South Delhi) and is conveniently close to the Delhi airport. There are plenty of restaurants, malls, theatres, and bars to enjoy on weekends.

In contrast, the nearest city to IIT Kharagpur is Kolkata, which is about 140 km away. The closest decent restaurant to IIT Kharagpur is a Domino’s outlet, and it doesn’t even deliver pizzas inside the campus.

I usually don’t put much stock in QS Rankings, but you can rely on them when they rank IIT Delhi higher than IIT Kharagpur.

Cheers!

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing stands out for its rigorous curriculum, especially if you're passionate about both math and tech, which can lead to lucrative internships and placements in top firms like Jane Street. The campus life is vibrant with numerous clubs and world-class facilities, and the faculty is highly esteemed, which enhances the learning experience.

On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Chemical Engineering offers a solid foundation in engineering with good placement opportunities, but it may not be as tech-focused or financially rewarding as the path in Mathematics and Computing at IIT Delhi. If you're leaning towards a career in tech or finance, I'd personally recommend IIT Delhi for its superior opportunities and overall student experience. However, if you're more inclined towards traditional engineering with a stable career path, then IIT Kharagpur could be a great fit.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers an impressive placement record with major companies like Microsoft, Google, and Jane Street frequently recruiting, leading to packages that can soar up to 4 crores. The rigorous curriculum prepares you well for high-paying roles in tech and finance, especially in quant trading where the stipends can start from 3 to 4 lakhs per month.

On the other hand, while IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Chemical Engineering is also reputable, its placement statistics and average packages tend to lag behind those of IIT Delhi, particularly in emerging tech fields. If you're passionate about mathematics and want to maximize your job prospects in tech and finance, IIT Delhi is the clear choice. Conversely, if you have a strong interest in chemical processes and traditional engineering sectors, IIT Kharagpur could still be a good fit.

IIT Delhi is the better choice, not just because it's closer to home, but because you don't have a specific interest. In that case, IIT Delhi is the best option for you!

Here’s why:

  • Flexibility: At IIT, you can explore various subjects. You can even take computer science courses while being in the chemical engineering branch.
  • Opportunities: IIT Delhi has a strong reputation and offers excellent placement opportunities across multiple fields.
  • Environment: The vibrant campus life and diverse student community can help you discover your interests and passions.

So, if you're unsure about your path, IIT Delhi is the way to go!

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers a rigorous curriculum and exceptional placements, especially in tech and quant roles, with top companies like Jane Street offering staggering packages that can reach 4 crores. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Chemical Engineering is also reputable but may not match the high salaries seen in tech fields. The tuition fees at IIT Delhi are about 1 lakh per semester, but there are numerous scholarships available to ease the financial burden, making it a smart investment for those passionate about mathematics and computing. If you're inclined towards tech, finance, or quant, IIT Delhi is definitely the better financial choice; however, if you're more interested in the chemical engineering field, IIT Kharagpur might be suitable, albeit with potentially lower immediate ROI.
