First, ask yourself if you genuinely have an interest in a specific field. Your decision shouldn't hinge on salary packages or closing ranks. Be honest with yourself! If you have a passion for a particular branch, choose it, regardless of which IIT you’re considering (excluding the newer ones, for which NITs might be a better option).

It’s likely that you don’t have a strong preference yet, given your limited knowledge of the branches. So, let’s compare them. Generally, Electrical and Mechanical are the more sought-after branches, being core fields, compared to the others mentioned. If that’s what you want, then the focus shifts to choosing between IIT BHU and IIT Gandhinagar. Between these two, IIT BHU is the better choice as it’s an older IIT, likely offering superior faculty and facilities compared to newer ones like IIT Gandhinagar. So, if you're considering only these two options, I would definitely recommend Mechanical at IIT BHU. With good performance, you might even have the chance to switch to Electrical at BHU later.

Now, looking at the bigger picture, I can confidently say that IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur are both excellent choices!

There are two main schools of thought in your decision-making process. The first revolves around the brand value of IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur, while the second focuses on the perceived superiority of core branches like Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

Let’s tackle the latter first. Here are two major reasons why people often choose core branches:

  • They are considered core branches, which supposedly offers a social advantage.
  • The aspiration for civil services.

I disregard both of these reasons. What I’ve learned over the past year at IIT Kharagpur is that the only branch that gives a significant advantage is Computer Science Engineering. For other branches, the differences are minimal for someone just starting their career. There might be slight variations, but nothing substantial. This addresses the first point. The second reason is even worse, yet it’s the most common. Deciding what you want to do four years down the line is simply unwise. There are countless opportunities available at IITs, and allowing things to unfold naturally tends to be the better approach.

So, it ultimately comes down to IIT Delhi or IIT Kharagpur. I can confidently say that all three departments in question are more than capable of securing a promising future. Fields like Civil or Aerospace Engineering may not offer the same level of assurance.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Engineering Physics offers a well-structured curriculum and a vibrant campus life with numerous clubs and activities, making it great for students who value research and a diverse experience. Meanwhile, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering likely provides robust industry connections and excellent placement opportunities, though I couldn't find specific data on their curriculum or campus life. Faculty at IIT Delhi is highly qualified, fostering strong student-faculty interactions, while Kharagpur also has a good reputation but may not match the personalized attention at Delhi. Personally, if you're leaning towards research and a lively campus atmosphere, I'd recommend IIT Delhi, but if your focus is on immediate job prospects in electronics, IIT Kharagpur might be the better choice.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Engineering Physics offers a strong foundation in research and industry-relevant projects, which can lead to solid internships with stipends ranging from 30,000 to 75,000 per month. Meanwhile, IIT Kharagpur’s B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering also has a reputable placement cell, but specific data on internships and packages isn’t as robust as IIT Delhi's. Given IIT Delhi's well-structured curriculum and better industry connections, it likely provides more lucrative job prospects and higher packages than IIT Kharagpur. If you are inclined towards research and want better internship opportunities, go for IIT Delhi; if you prefer a more traditional engineering path with decent placements, IIT Kharagpur is still a good option.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Engineering Physics has a robust curriculum and a supportive internship cell, but the fees can be higher, especially for the OPEN category students. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering offers a great balance of academics and campus life, with potentially lower tuition and better industry connections, which could enhance your ROI. Scholarships at IIT Delhi are available but often don't cover the full cost, while Kharagpur may provide a more affordable option overall. If you're inclined towards research and can manage the fees, go for IIT Delhi; otherwise, IIT Kharagpur seems like the smarter financial choice with solid prospects.
