Which one should I opt for IIT Delhi B.Tech Engineering Physics or IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Electrical Engineering

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Engineering Physics offers a strong focus on research and industry-relevant projects, which can lead to impressive internships and placements, especially with companies like Tata and Wipro offering stipends ranging from 30,000 to 75,000. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering also has a solid curriculum and good placement records, but the specifics about internships and industry tie-ups are not as prominent. Overall, if you’re leaning towards research and a diverse internship experience, IIT Delhi would be a better choice, while IIT Kharagpur might suit you if you prefer a more traditional engineering path with strong electrical engineering prospects. If job packages and internships are your main focus, go with IIT Delhi.

For students keen on a more traditional engineering path with better immediate financial returns, IIT Kharagpur is likely the better pick, while those focused on niche research might lean towards IIT Delhi.

First, ask yourself if you truly have an interest in a specific field. Your decision shouldn’t hinge on salary packages or closing ranks. Be honest with yourself. If you have a passion for a particular branch, choose it, regardless of which IIT you attend (excluding the newer ones, for which NITs might be a better option).

Now, it’s likely that you don’t have a strong interest yet, as you may not have much knowledge about the branches. So, let’s compare them. Generally, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering are the more sought-after core branches compared to others. If that’s what you’re aiming for, the focus shifts to IIT BHU and IIT Gandhinagar. Between these two, IIT BHU is the better choice since it’s an older IIT with superior faculty and facilities compared to IIT Gandhinagar.

So, considering just these two options, I would definitely recommend Mechanical at IIT BHU. With good performance, you might even have the chance to switch to Electrical at BHU later.

Looking at the bigger picture, I can confidently say that IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur are both excellent institutions.

There are two schools of thought in this decision of yours. The first is the brand value of IIT Delhi (IITD) and IIT Kharagpur (IITK), and the second is the perceived superiority of core branches like Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

Let’s tackle the latter first. The two main reasons people lean towards core branches are:

• They are considered core branches, which supposedly gives a social advantage.
• The aspiration for civil services.

I disregard both of these reasons. What I’ve learned over a year at IITK is that the only branch that truly offers a significant advantage is Computer Science Engineering (CSE). For other branches, the differences are minimal when starting a career. There might be slight variations, but nothing substantial. This addresses the first point. The second reason is even worse, yet it’s the most common. Trying to decide what you’ll do four years down the line is simply unwise. There are countless opportunities available at IITs, and letting things unfold naturally is often the better approach.

So, it ultimately comes down to IITD or IITK. I can confidently say that all three departments in question are more than capable of ensuring a bright future. Fields like Civil or Aerospace don’t have the same level of assurance.

First of all, all top 5 IITs (Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur, Kanpur) are excellent in terms of placement, academic exposure, campus life, fests, and many other aspects.

• Engineering Physics is not a core branch like Mechanical or Chemical. It encompasses combined disciplines of engineering, particularly Computer, Nuclear, Electrical, Electronic, Aerospace, and Mechanical. If you're leaning towards the engineering field, this branch could be a good fit.
• If you're considering a career in academia, either in India or abroad, you might want to opt for a BS in Physics.
• If you’re not particularly inclined towards any specific branch, you can choose the IIT that appeals to you, even if it means compromising on the branch.
