I’m not from the Metallurgical and Materials Science department, but I’ve spoken to a few people from there and gathered some statistics. Here’s a rough idea:

First of all, most students are not pursuing higher studies. So, if you’re focused on placements, this is what you need to know. There are a few core companies that recruit from this department, but many students end up exploring other options, including data analytics and various other profiles. So, the stats below don’t necessarily reflect core placements.

The stats don’t guarantee placements. Only a handful of students secure jobs compared to other departments. Now, let’s look at the average packages:

  • 50–60% of those who were placed actually received packages.
  • Again, many of them found positions in non-core companies.

Conclusion: If you’re aiming for placements rather than further studies, this department may not ensure a good placement. The number of core companies recruiting is limited, which leads many students to pursue non-core opportunities.

Good placements?

Did you know that someone from IIT KGP took Metallurgy and look where they are now? But they were a department topper.

So, placements don't really depend on the “branch” but on how good your CGPA is.

Hope this helps! :)

IIT Delhi’s B.Tech in Electrical Engineering stands out for its strong faculty and comprehensive curriculum, fostering independent problem-solving skills among students. The campus life is vibrant, with numerous clubs and activities enhancing the overall experience, and the placement stats are impressive, with around 88% of students securing jobs through campus recruitment.

On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur’s B.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering offers a solid education but has a larger student-faculty ratio and a less favorable teaching style. While both colleges have their strengths, I would personally lean towards IIT Delhi for its better placement opportunities and a more engaging campus life. If you're passionate about electrical engineering and want a dynamic environment, IIT Delhi is the clear choice; however, if you prefer a specialized field like metallurgy and a more traditional approach, IIT Kharagpur can be a good fit.

Having researched both IIT Delhi for B.Tech in Electrical Engineering and IIT Kharagpur for B.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, I feel that IIT Delhi offers a better return on investment. The fees at IIT Delhi are relatively high, but the placement rates are impressive, with around 88% of students securing jobs through campus placements, often in top tech firms. In contrast, while IIT Kharagpur has a strong reputation, the student-faculty ratio and teaching style may not be as robust, which can impact job readiness. Also, IIT Delhi's curriculum aligns well with industry needs, making it a smarter financial choice for students aiming for lucrative tech roles.

Overall, if you’re passionate about electrical engineering and want strong placement opportunities, go for IIT Delhi; if you’re more interested in materials science and can handle a less defined placement scenario, IIT Kharagpur could work for you.
