IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering offers a strong placement record, with around 88% of students securing jobs through campus placements, attracting top-tier tech firms like Google and Samsung. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering has a more niche focus, which might limit the breadth of companies that recruit from there, although it still offers solid opportunities in specialized fields. Both colleges have impressive faculty and resources, but IIT Delhi's broader appeal in the tech industry likely gives its graduates an edge in job prospects and packages. If you're leaning towards a career in tech or electronics, IIT Delhi is the better choice, while IIT Kharagpur might suit those passionate about marine engineering or naval architecture.

Placement for an individual depends entirely on their performance in interviews, aptitude tests, and their academic as well as non-academic achievements in college. Thus, placement statistics can only provide a generalized idea about the department, and no definitive conclusions should be drawn from them.

The following companies offer internship opportunities for students of ONA (Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture):

  • ABG Shipyard Limited
  • HSBC Electronic Data Processing India Pvt. Ltd.
  • American Reprographics
  • Impetus Infotech (India) Pvt. Ltd.
  • ANGLO EASTERN SHIP MANAGEMENT LTD
  • INDIAN NAVY
  • BABAJOB SERVICES PVT LTD
  • Indian Register of Shipping
  • Bankbazaar
  • Infotech Enterprise Ltd, Hyderabad
  • Barclays Capital
  • Keppel Fels Offshore & Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd.
  • Beehyv Software Solutions Pvt. Ltd.
  • Larsen & Toubro Limited
  • Bharati Shipyard Ltd.
  • MAGMA FINCORP LTD
  • Capillary Technologies
  • Mazagon Dock Limited
  • Capital One Financial Services (India)
  • Ministry of Defence (Navy)
  • Cognizant Technology Solutions
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
  • Cybermarine Knowledge Systems Pvt. Ltd.
  • Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering Company Limited

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering offers a solid curriculum with a strong emphasis on self-driven problem solving, and the placement statistics are impressive with around 88% securing jobs, which is a big plus. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering may have a more niche appeal, with a not-so-great student-faculty ratio and less clarity on placements, likely reflecting a smaller job market. Campus life at IIT Delhi seems vibrant with numerous clubs and activities, while Kharagpur also has a lively atmosphere but may not match Delhi’s prestige. Personally, I would pick IIT Delhi for its stronger placement prospects and engaging campus life, making it ideal for students looking for robust opportunities in the tech and engineering sectors.

Placement, internship, and job opportunities are not great at the moment.

There was a time when India produced hardly 50 Naval Architects, and the shipping market was booming. Those days, Naval Architects had excellent placements.

However, the shipping and offshore (oil and gas) market has crashed now. There are no projects, and ships are lying idle. The market is facing such an oversupply that not only is building new ships a challenge, but even new ships are being sold at 30% of their original price or are being scrapped. Bharati Shipyard is bankrupt. ABG is bankrupt. Great Offshore is bankrupt.

To add to this, there are now almost 1000 Naval Architects graduating every year in India. So, the competition is fierce.

You will get a job if you choose Naval Architecture at IIT Kharagpur. But it will likely be in a different industry, such as analytics, software, or marketing. Don’t expect too much from the core industry if that’s your goal.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering offers a strong placement record with around 88% of students securing jobs through campus recruitment, likely due to its reputation and connections with top tech firms like Google and Samsung. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur’s B.Tech in Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering has a more niche market, which may affect job availability, though it has a solid engineering reputation. Both colleges have high fees, but IIT Delhi's ROI seems better given its higher placement success and the potential salary packages from leading tech companies. If you're looking for a more lucrative and stable career path, IIT Delhi is the smarter financial choice, while IIT Kharagpur could be a great fit if you’re passionate about naval architecture specifically.
