IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur both offer excellent programs, but they cater to different interests and career paths. IIT Delhi’s B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering focuses heavily on AI/ML, providing a modern curriculum and abundant internship opportunities with top companies, which is great if you're eyeing a future in tech. The campus life is vibrant with friendly faculty and diverse extracurriculars.

On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur’s B.Tech + M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering offers a solid dual degree that could be advantageous for a deeper understanding of engineering principles, though the emphasis on mechanical may not provide the same tech-centric exposure as IIT Delhi. If you're passionate about computer science and want a fast-paced tech career, I’d recommend IIT Delhi; but if you prefer a broader engineering scope and the dual degree advantage, go for IIT Kharagpur.

IIT Delhi’s B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering is a great option if you’re looking for a strong ROI, especially with the booming AI/ML sector. However, the fees are quite high, around 20 lakhs, which can be a burden. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur’s B.Tech + M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering offers a more extended course but could potentially provide better value for money with two degrees. Both colleges have solid internship opportunities, but IIT Delhi has an edge in tech placements with companies like Amazon and Google. If you’re passionate about tech and can manage the high fees, go for IIT Delhi, but if you prefer a comprehensive engineering education with a better financial spread over time, IIT Kharagpur could be the smarter choice.

IIT Delhi offers a B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering, which is highly sought after due to the booming tech industry and strong internship opportunities with top companies like Amazon and Google. The aggressive curriculum focuses on AI/ML, giving you an edge in a growing field. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech + M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering might provide a broader engineering perspective, but its placement stats are generally less impressive for tech roles compared to IIT Delhi's CS program. Given the current job market's lean towards technology, I’d recommend IIT Delhi if you’re leaning towards a tech career. IIT Kharagpur is a solid option for those wanting a deeper dive into mechanical engineering, but for immediate job prospects in tech, IIT Delhi is the way to go.

It really depends on what you mean by "effectiveness." As an IITB alumnus (M.Tech 2014 batch), I can share some insights about IITB. I can't speak for the other IITs, though.

If salary packages are your main concern, B.Tech graduates definitely have the edge here. Unless you're from CSE or applied statistics, M.Tech graduates usually end up in core jobs, and those don't typically pay 21 lacs per annum. If you're in CSE or stats, you might get a chance to interview with investment banks and finance companies that flock to IITB in the early days. If you're skilled in programming, regardless of your branch, landing a job with a 13 lac offer shouldn't be too tough. However, if you're a mechanical engineering student like me with limited programming skills, you can expect to secure an 8 lac offer without much hassle.

Now, regarding the companies:

  • Most top consulting firms like Boston Consulting, Goldman Sachs, Booz & Co. etc., do not hire post-graduate students. They focus solely on B.Tech graduates.
  • There are specialized core companies that recruit only M.Tech graduates, and they offer competitive salaries.
  • Lastly, many companies are open to both B.Tech and M.Tech graduates. So, if you can outperform the competition…

IIT Delhi.

Reasons include:

  • Better professors.
  • Higher calibre of your future batchmates.
  • Superior placement opportunities (many multinational corporations like Samsung Korea and Rubrik U.S. don’t visit IIT Kharagpur, but they regularly recruit from IIT Delhi for internships and placements).
  • More chances for pursuing further studies at top-tier international universities.

Additionally, IIT Delhi is situated in the heart of Delhi (specifically South Delhi) and is conveniently close to the Delhi airport. There are plenty of restaurants, malls, theatres, and bars to enjoy on weekends.

In contrast, the nearest city to IIT Kharagpur is Kolkata, which is about 140 km away. The closest decent restaurant to IIT Kharagpur is a Domino’s outlet, and it doesn’t even deliver pizzas on campus.

While I typically don’t put much stock in QS Rankings, you can rely on them when they rank IIT Delhi higher than IIT Kharagpur.

Cheers!
