How do the placements really compare between IIT Delhi B.Tech Computer Science Engineering and IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Aerospace Engineering?

In 2015, companies like Eaton, Boeing, Airbus, Honeywell, Rolls Royce, General Electric, and Siemens (among others) visited the campus. There are also smaller companies involved in drone making, CFD, etc. Some students even land positions at ADA, HAL, or possibly ISRO. The faculty is excellent in areas like Fluids, Structures, and Controls, although the Propulsion side is relatively weak.

Every year, around 5–7 students from each batch secure funded grad school admits from top 10 global institutions. The job situation is comparable to other non-Circuital branches. While a few talented students may miss out, this is common across various fields. Importantly, many professors are highly respected by their peers in the US.

Don’t take it lightly—build a strong foundation in:

• Mathematics
• Dynamics (not just JEE level; think hardcore dynamics, transport theorem, Kane, Hamilton, etc.—the cool stuff!)
• Fluids (the department offers many great courses and professors)
• Thermodynamics
• Continuum Mechanics
• Flight Dynamics and Stability
• Estimation and Controls (at least linear, modern, optimal, and some nonlinear controls)

This solid foundation will set you up for a successful career. Be sincere and committed!

Having graduated from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Kharagpur in 2020, I feel qualified to address this question and discuss the current placement and higher studies scenario (which I consider equivalent).

Students joined the institute in 2015, and the situation now is significantly better than it was five years ago, thanks to the dedication of faculty members and students. Over the past five years, the department has seen a series of improvements:

• Renovation of old buildings.
• Inauguration of a new G+3 annex building equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities.
• Renovation of old labs and procurement of new water and wind tunnels.
• Ongoing development of new facilities for combustion, turbomachinery research, and controls.

Additionally, students have initiated new research groups within the department, providing hands-on experience to newcomers across various interconnected domains. The department has welcomed several new faculty members in recent years. From organizing national conferences and short-term courses to inviting guest lecturers, the department is thriving!

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering generally offers better placement opportunities compared to IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering, especially with tech giants like Amazon and Google actively recruiting. While IIT Delhi has a higher fee structure, around 20 lakhs, the ROI tends to be better due to the lucrative job offers in the tech sector. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur may have a lower fee and solid aerospace prospects but is more niche, which limits job options. For someone focused on immediate job prospects and tech careers, IIT Delhi is the smarter financial choice, while those passionate about aerospace might find IIT Kharagpur rewarding in the long run.
