WBJEE 2026 is a state-level undergraduate entrance examination conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) for admission to B.Tech, B.Pharm, and B.Arch programmes in more than 100 colleges across West Bengal. The exam was held on May 24, 2026, and the result was declared on June 18, 2026, with 92,753 candidates qualifying out of 1,20,856 who appeared. As of July 1, 2026, WBJEE 2026 centralised counselling is underway — choice filling opened on June 30 and remains active until July 5, 2026.
- Choice Filling Deadline: WBJEE 2026 counselling Round 1 choice filling closes on July 5, 2026. Candidates must log in at wbjeeb.nic.in, build and lock their college-branch preference list before this deadline. In 2025, more than 70,000 qualified candidates participated in the centralised seat allotment process.
- Round 1 Seat Allotment: WBJEE 2026 Round 1 seat allotment result will be published on July 7, 2026. Allotted candidates must pay the seat acceptance fee and report to their allotted institute with original documents by July 11, 2026.
- Round 2 Allotment: Round 2 registration opens July 13, and the allotment result is scheduled for July 21, 2026. Candidates unsatisfied with their Round 1 seat can revise their choice list in this round to try for a better college or branch.
- Mop-Up Round (Round 3): The WBJEE 2026 mop-up round registration is from July 24 to 26, 2026, with allotment on July 28, 2026. Any seats remaining after Round 2 are filled in this final round — in 2025, the mop-up round filled over 3,000 vacant seats.
What is WBJEE 2026?
WBJEE stands for West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination. The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB), based in Salt Lake City, Kolkata, conducts this exam every year for candidates seeking admission to undergraduate Engineering, Technology, Pharmacy, and Architecture programmes at colleges in West Bengal. It is one of the most significant state-level entrance examinations in eastern India, and the primary gateway to technical education in the state for both West Bengal domicile students and All India candidates.
For the 2026-27 academic session, WBJEE 2026 was held on May 24, 2026, in offline (pen-and-paper) mode at 264 exam centres across West Bengal, Assam, and Tripura. More than 1.2 lakh candidates appeared, competing for around 35,000 B.Tech, B.Pharm, and B.Arch seats at 100+ participating institutes. The exam is split into two papers — Paper 1 for Mathematics and Paper 2 for Physics and Chemistry — both conducted as OMR-based tests.
WBJEE scores are accepted by government universities, government-aided colleges, and a large number of private engineering colleges affiliated with MAKAUT (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal). Jadavpur University is the most sought-after institution in the WBJEE system, with its CSE branch having the most competitive closing rank in the state.

WBJEE 2026 Eligibility Criteria
All candidates must meet the eligibility conditions set by WBJEEB before registering for WBJEE or participating in counselling. If you do not meet the criteria, your candidature can be cancelled at any stage — even during college admission. Check all conditions carefully.
Age Limit
- You must be at least 17 years old as of December 31, 2025. This means you should have been born on or before December 31, 2008.
- There is no upper age limit for B.Tech and B.Pharm programmes.
- For Marine Engineering programmes, the upper age limit is 25 years.
Educational Qualification
- You must have passed Class 12 (10+2 level) or an equivalent examination from a recognised board, or be appearing in Class 12 in 2026.
- Physics and Mathematics are compulsory subjects in Class 12 for B.Tech and B.Arch applicants. Any one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science, or Biology must be the third subject.
- Minimum PCM aggregate: 45% for General and EWS candidates; 40% for SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, and PwD candidates.
- You must pass each subject individually — a combined average alone is not enough to qualify.
- For B.Pharm: Physics and Chemistry are compulsory, with Mathematics or Biology as the third subject in Class 12.
Nationality and Domicile
- You must be an Indian citizen or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder.
- West Bengal domicile is required for Home State (HS) quota seats in government colleges — which form the majority of WBJEE seats.
- Candidates from other states can apply and receive a WBJEE rank, but they can only compete for All India (AI) quota seats at participating colleges, not for HS-reserved seats.
Paper Requirements by Course
| Course | Papers Required | Class 12 Subjects Required |
|---|---|---|
| B.Tech / B.E. / B.Arch | Paper 1 (Mathematics) + Paper 2 (Physics & Chemistry) | Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry / Biotechnology / CS |
| B.Pharm | Paper 2 only (Physics & Chemistry) | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology |
B.Tech and B.Arch candidates must appear in both Paper 1 and Paper 2. If you skip Paper 1 (Mathematics), your Paper 2 score alone will not make you eligible for B.Tech or B.Arch admissions — even if you score very well in Physics and Chemistry.

WBJEE 2026 Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme
WBJEE 2026 was conducted on May 24, 2026, in two separate offline (OMR) papers. The three-category question structure is one of WBJEE’s most distinctive features — understanding it fully determines your exam strategy, especially around which questions to attempt and where to be cautious about negative marking.
Mathematics alone carries 100 out of 200 marks — exactly half the total score. Candidates who excel in Mathematics consistently secure better ranks than those who focus only on Physics and Chemistry. This makes Paper 1 the most critical session of the exam.
WBJEE 2026 Paper-wise Structure
| Paper | Subject | Time | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Mathematics | 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM | 75 | 100 |
| Paper 2 | Physics | 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM | 40 | 50 |
| Chemistry | 40 | 50 | ||
| Total | 4 hours | 155 | 200 | |
Three-Category Marking Scheme
WBJEE uses three types of question categories. The key rule to remember: Category 3 has no negative marking — always attempt all Category 3 questions regardless of confidence level.
| Category | Type | Marks (Correct) | Penalty (Wrong) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category 1 | Single correct option | +1 mark | –0.25 mark |
| Category 2 | One or more correct options | +2 marks | –0.5 mark (if any selected option is wrong) |
| Category 3 | Single correct option | +2 marks | No penalty |
Category-wise Question Distribution by Subject
| Subject | Category 1 | Category 2 | Category 3 | Total Questions | Total Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics (Paper 1) | 50 | 15 | 10 | 75 | 100 |
| Physics (Paper 2) | 30 | 5 | 5 | 40 | 50 |
| Chemistry (Paper 2) | 30 | 5 | 5 | 40 | 50 |
| Total | 110 | 25 | 20 | 155 | 200 |
Source: WBJEE 2026 Information Bulletin — wbjeeb.nic.in
For Category 2, even if some of your selected options are correct, you lose 0.5 marks the moment any one selected option is wrong. Mark Category 2 questions only when you are 100% sure about every correct option — a partial guess hurts more than a skip.
WBJEE 2026 Syllabus: Subject-wise Topics
The WBJEE 2026 syllabus is based on the Class 11 and Class 12 curricula of recognised Indian boards. It is closely aligned with the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) curriculum, and NCERT content also covers most of the topics well. Candidates who did not receive a rank are not eligible for counselling. Only ranked candidates can register and participate in seat allotment across all three rounds.
WBJEE 2026 Marks vs Rank Analysis
The Marks vs Rank relationship helps you estimate your expected rank based on your WBJEE 2026 score. Your rank depends on your total raw marks, the paper’s difficulty, and how all other 92,753 qualified candidates performed. WBJEEB does not use normalization since the exam is held in a single session on the same day across all centres. The official 2026 marks vs rank data will be published after counselling concludes. The table below is based on 2025 and previous year trends.
WBJEE 2026 Expected Marks vs Rank — General Category
| Marks Scored (out of 200) | Expected General Merit Rank (GMR) |
|---|---|
| 185 – 200 | 1 – 60 |
| 171 – 184 | 61 – 200 |
| 157 – 170 | 201 – 450 |
| 143 – 156 | 451 – 900 |
| 130 – 142 | 901 – 2,000 |
| 117 – 129 | 2,001 – 4,500 |
| 104 – 116 | 4,501 – 8,000 |
| 90 – 103 | 8,001 – 14,000 |
| 75 – 89 | 14,001 – 25,000 |
| 55 – 74 | 25,001 – 60,000 |
These estimates are based on 2025 data and general historical trends. Actual 2026 ranks depend on this year’s paper difficulty and performance distribution. WBJEEB publishes the official marks vs rank table after counselling is complete.
How Tie-breaking Works in WBJEE
If two candidates score the same total marks, WBJEEB applies the following tie-breaking sequence to determine who ranks higher:
- Higher marks in Mathematics (Paper 1) ranks better
- If still tied: fewer wrong answers in Paper 1
- If still tied: higher marks in Paper 2 (Physics + Chemistry combined)
- If still tied: fewer wrong answers in Paper 2
- Age is used as a final tiebreaker — older candidate ranks higher
General Merit Rank vs Category Rank
Along with the General Merit Rank (GMR), candidates from reserved categories — SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, EWS, TFW, PwD — receive a separate category rank. This rank is computed only among candidates from the same reserved category. The category rank is what determines eligibility for reserved seats during counselling, not the GMR. A candidate with GMR 5,000 may have an OBC-A rank of 700 or an SC rank of 550 — both are printed on the rank card.
WBJEE 2026 Counselling
WBJEE 2026 centralised counselling started on June 30, 2026, and is conducted by WBJEEB at wbjeeb.nic.in. A single registration covers all three counselling rounds — Round 1, Round 2 (Upgradation), and Round 3 (Mop-Up). You do not need to register again for each round. As of July 1, 2026, counselling is in its active choice-filling window, which closes on July 5.
WBJEE 2026 Counselling Schedule

WBJEE 2026 Counselling Process: Step by Step
- Step 1 — Counselling Registration: Log in at the WBJEEB counselling portal using your WBJEE 2026 application credentials. Fill in the counselling registration form and pay the non-refundable counselling registration fee of ₹500.
- Step 2 — Choice Filling and Locking: Add colleges and branches to your preference list in your preferred order. WBJEEB recommends filling at least 20 choices across different institutions and branches to improve allotment chances. Lock your choices before the deadline (July 5 for Round 1) — choices cannot be changed after locking, and unlocked choices are not considered for allotment.
- Step 3 — Check Allotment Result: Round 1 allotment is on July 7. Log in to the portal to check whether a seat has been allotted to you.
- Step 4 — Pay Seat Acceptance Fee: If allotted a seat, pay the seat acceptance fee online within the reporting window. This payment confirms your intent to join the allotted institute.
- Step 5 — Report with Documents: Visit your allotted college between July 7 and July 11 with original documents and self-attested photocopies. The college verifies your documents and confirms your provisional admission.
- Step 6 — Round 2 Upgradation (Optional): If you want a better college or branch, update your preference list during July 13–17. If you receive a better allotment in Round 2, your Round 1 seat is automatically released. If no better seat is allotted, you keep your Round 1 seat.
- Step 7 — Mop-Up Round: Any seats remaining after Round 2 are filled in the mop-up round. Registration is from July 24 to 26, with allotment on July 28. This is the final opportunity to secure a seat through centralised counselling.
Documents Required for WBJEE 2026 Counselling
Carry original documents and self-attested photocopies of all of the following when reporting to your allotted college for document verification:
- WBJEE 2026 rank card (downloaded from wbjeeb.nic.in)
- WBJEE 2026 seat allotment letter
- Class 10 marksheet and passing certificate (for date of birth verification)
- Class 12 marksheet and passing certificate

- West Bengal domicile or residential certificate (for HS quota seats in government colleges)
- TFW (Tuition Fee Waiver) certificate, if applicable
- PwD certificate from authorised medical board, if applicable
- Valid photo ID — Aadhaar card, Voter ID, or Passport
- 4–6 recent passport-size photographs
Missing documents at the time of institute reporting can result in cancellation of your seat allotment, even after the acceptance fee has been paid. Carry both originals and photocopies of every document on the list.
WBJEE 2026 Cutoff: Expected Ranks for Top Colleges
The official WBJEE 2026 cutoff — college-wise and branch-wise opening and closing ranks — will be published by WBJEEB after Round 1 allotment on July 7, 2026, at wbjeeb.nic.in. It is important to understand two types of cutoffs: the qualifying cutoff (minimum marks to receive any rank at all) and the admission cutoff (minimum rank required for a specific college and branch).
Approximate Qualifying Marks to Receive a WBJEE Rank (Category-wise)
| Category | Approx. Minimum Marks to Receive a Rank |
|---|---|
| General / EWS | 45 – 55 marks out of 200 |
| OBC-A / OBC-B | 40 – 50 marks out of 200 |
| SC / ST / PwD | 40 – 45 marks out of 200 |
Expected Admission Cutoff at Top Colleges — Based on 2025 Counselling Data
| College | Branch | Approx. Closing Rank — General HS (2025) | Approx. Closing Rank — SC HS (2025) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jadavpur University | Computer Science & Engineering | ~238 | ~1,200 |
| Jadavpur University | Electronics & Telecommunication | ~500 | ~2,300 |
| Jadavpur University | Electrical Engineering | ~650 | ~3,200 |
| Jadavpur University | Mechanical Engineering | ~1,200 | ~5,000 |
| Jadavpur University | Civil Engineering | ~2,600 | ~8,500 |
| Kalyani Government Engineering College | CSE | ~5,500 | ~15,000 |
| Kalyani Government Engineering College | Electronics & Communication | ~8,000 | ~22,000 |
| RCC Institute of Information Technology | CSE | ~7,500 | ~20,000 |
| Heritage Institute of Technology | CSE | ~4,500 | ~12,000 |
These figures are based on 2025 counselling closing ranks and are for planning reference only. The official WBJEE 2026 cutoff will be published at wbjeeb.nic.in starting July 7, 2026. Actual 2026 ranks may differ based on this year’s total qualified candidates and paper difficulty.
A WBJEE rank, however good, does not guarantee a seat at any specific college or branch. Always fill at least 20 choices across multiple colleges and multiple branches to improve your allotment chances. Having only 4–5 choices risks going unallotted if those seats are filled by higher-ranked candidates.
Top Colleges Accepting WBJEE 2026 Score
More than 100 engineering, pharmacy, and architecture colleges in West Bengal accept WBJEE 2026 scores for undergraduate admissions. These include government universities, government-aided autonomous colleges, and private institutions affiliated with MAKAUT.
Note: IIEST Shibpur (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur) is a National Institute and does NOT participate in WBJEE counselling. It admits students through JoSAA centralised counselling using JEE Main scores only.

Jadavpur University is consistently the most competitive institution in WBJEE. CSE at Jadavpur closed around rank 238 for General HS category in 2025 — the tightest cutoff of any branch across all WBJEE-accepting colleges. Even its less popular branches like Civil Engineering have closing ranks significantly better than the top CSE branches at private colleges.
For candidates with a rank between 5,000 and 20,000, there are many well-established government-aided and private engineering colleges in Kolkata and surrounding districts with strong academic records and good placement track records. CSE is the most sought-after branch at almost every college, making its closing rank consistently tighter than ECE, EE, or ME at the same institution.
WBJEE 2026 Preparation Tips
For students currently studying and targeting WBJEE in the next cycle, or for those seeking to understand what drives strong ranks, here are the key preparation strategies based on WBJEE 2026’s pattern and consistent trends from previous years.
1. Treat Mathematics as Your Primary Subject
Mathematics carries 100 out of 200 marks — exactly half the exam. Students who consistently score 70+ in Paper 1 (Mathematics) almost always land a rank below 3,000. Spend at least 40–50% of your total preparation time on Mathematics, with Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, and Algebra as your highest priorities.
2. Always Attempt Every Category 3 Question
Category 3 has 20 questions worth 40 total marks with no negative marking. Many students skip these because they look complicated (single correct, but 2 marks each). Do not skip them. Even a reasonable guess in Category 3 carries zero risk. A disciplined approach to all 20 Category 3 questions — across Paper 1 and Paper 2 — is one of the most effective rank-improvement tactics in WBJEE.
3. Be Conservative with Category 2 Questions
Category 2 questions carry 2 marks for a correct answer but −0.5 marks if even one of your selected options is wrong. If two of your three selected options are correct but one is not, you still lose 0.5 marks. Attempt Category 2 questions only when you have full confidence in every correct option you want to select.
4. Use NCERT as Your Foundation
NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks cover the majority of concepts tested in WBJEE, especially for Physics and Chemistry. Build your conceptual base from NCERT before moving to heavier reference books. Most Category 1 questions (1 mark each) are NCERT-level, and clearing them cleanly without negative marks is what separates mid-range ranks from lower ranks.
5. Solve Previous Year WBJEE Papers
WBJEE previous year papers from 2016 onwards are available at the official WBJEEB website under the Old Question Paper section. WBJEE questions tend to be conceptual rather than calculation-intensive, which is a key stylistic difference from JEE Main. Solving past papers helps you get comfortable with the category-based format and identify which chapters appear most consistently.
6. Manage Time Across Both Papers
You get 2 hours each for Paper 1 and Paper 2. A common and effective strategy is to attempt all Category 1 questions first (they are meant to be faster), then spend remaining time on Category 2 and Category 3. Do not spend more than 2–3 minutes on any single question — move on, mark it, and come back if time permits.

You must be at least 17 years old as of December 31, 2025, and must have passed Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, plus Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science, or Biology as the third subject. Minimum PCM aggregate is 45% for General and EWS candidates and 40% for SC, ST, OBC, and PwD candidates. You must be an Indian citizen or OCI cardholder. There is no upper age limit for B.Tech and B.Pharm programmes.
Ques. What is the WBJEE 2026 exam pattern?
Ans. WBJEE 2026 had two offline OMR-based papers. Paper 1 was Mathematics (11 AM – 1 PM, 75 questions, 100 marks). Paper 2 was Physics and Chemistry (2 PM – 4 PM, 80 questions, 100 marks — 40 questions and 50 marks each for Physics and Chemistry). Total: 155 questions, 200 marks, 4 hours. Questions fall in three categories — Category 1 (+1/–0.25), Category 2 (+2/–0.5 if any selected option is wrong), and Category 3 (+2, no negative marking).

Ans. Based on 2025 counselling data, General category Home State candidates needed a closing rank of approximately 238 to secure CSE at Jadavpur University in Round 2. For OBC-A candidates, the closing rank was around 420, and for SC candidates approximately 1,200. These are 2025 reference figures — the official 2026 cutoff will be published after Round 1 allotment on July 7, 2026.
Ques. Does IIEST Shibpur accept WBJEE scores?
Ans. No. IIEST Shibpur (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur) is an Institute of National Importance and does not participate in WBJEE counselling. It admits students through JoSAA centralised counselling using JEE Main scores. If you want to study at IIEST Shibpur, you must qualify in JEE Main — WBJEE rank alone is not accepted there.
Ques. Can candidates from outside West Bengal apply for WBJEE 2026?
Ans. Yes. Candidates from any state can appear for WBJEE 2026 and receive a rank. However, they are eligible only for All India (AI) quota seats — approximately 10% of the total seats in each college and branch. Home State (HS) seats, which form the majority of available seats, are reserved for West Bengal domicile candidates. AI category seats at top colleges have very competitive closing ranks, often tighter than HS ranks for the same branch.
Ques. How many seats are available through WBJEE 2026 counselling?
Ans. Approximately 35,000 seats are available across B.Tech, B.Pharm, and B.Arch programmes at 100+ colleges in West Bengal through WBJEE 2026 counselling. This includes seats at government universities, government-aided colleges, and private colleges affiliated with MAKAUT (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal).
Ques. Is there negative marking in WBJEE 2026?
Ans. Yes, negative marking applies in Category 1 and Category 2 questions. For Category 1, you lose 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. For Category 2 (one or more correct options), you lose 0.5 marks if any one of your selected options is wrong — even if your other selections were correct. Category 3 questions have no negative marking at all: you gain 2 marks for a correct answer and lose nothing for a wrong one. Always attempt all Category 3 questions.
Ques. What documents are needed for WBJEE 2026 counselling reporting?
Ans. When reporting to your allotted institute, carry originals and self-attested photocopies of: WBJEE 2026 rank card, seat allotment letter, Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets and certificates, category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS, if applicable), West Bengal domicile certificate (for HS quota seats at government colleges), valid photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, or Passport), and 4–6 recent passport-size photographs. Missing any original document can result in cancellation of your seat.
