WBJEE Rank Rule

WBJEE Merit List 2024: Rules for Determining Rank

If one analyzes the WBJEE Rank List of previous years, one can easily identify a trend in the ranks achieved and colleges granted. There are basically four rules followed in the rank system. Let’s check it out:

  1. More Marks mean Less Crowd

Whenever a student scores high, the competition will be less for them. The reason behind this is that there are very few students who are able to score in the upper bracket. Thus, rank does not vary much with marks.

  1. Less Marks mean More Crowd

If a student scores less (for example 40, 50, or 60), there will be a huge competition and crowd as there will be numerous students who would have secured the same marks and fall under the same bracket. In such cases, even a difference of 1 mark can cause a shift of 500-600 rank.

  1. Negative Marking can cause a Drop-in Rank

There are two students who have obtained the same marks, but there is a difference in rank. Why? This is primarily because one of them might have marked a higher number of wrong answers. For example, there are two students A & B. Both of them get a score of 50. However, A marked higher number of negative questions, say 5; and B marked 0 negative questions. In this case, A will get a rank of approximately 8000 whereas B will get a rank of 7500. Thus, there’s a high demand of accuracy while attempting paper.

  1. Subject Priority

If two students score the same, their rank is decided on the subject priority. Subject Priority means the number of questions attempted from Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. This is how priority charts flow down. Take for example, two students, X & Y, both get a score of 80 marks. X attempted 50 questions from Mathematics (highest) whereas Y attempted 40 questions from Physics (highest). Since X attempted more number of questions from Priority I subject, they will get a higher rank than Y.

Check Seat Allotment

Final Tie-breaking rule for GMR and PMR

After application of the tie-breaking rules as applicable, if there are still ties, the same will be broken by the date of birth (DOB) of the candidates, with the older candidate having preference over the younger one.

After the declaration of merit list, counselling rounds are conducted based on the ranks secured by candidates in the exam. Candidates who qualify the exam are eligible to participate in WBJEE counselling 2024.
