Scholarship

  • I received a Graduate Student Instructor position within my department, this position comes with a salary and a tuition waiver ( You won’t have to pay fees for that semester). Other than this, there are no scholarships that the university provides. There are some instances where students receive a small amount of concession but that solely depends upon your academics from India and your department you are applying to. The way it works is if the department has funding.

  • I did not receive a scholarship
  • The do not have like a definitive criteria for rolling out scholarships for international students. You are automatically enrolled for the list but you’ll only get to know if you had been selected, they evaluate everything including your SOP and personal statement. So if you make a strong case there, you could get one
  • One of my friends had received scholarship. That waives off 1 semester worth of tuition
  • Very few scholarships are there for international students.

  • No , I didn't but I was eligible for UBI's scheme of Vidya Lakshmi Education Loan, where a students admitted in world's some of the top colleges , will receive a non-collateral loan of INR 40 lakhs, with less ROI of 9.75%, which is really cheap for non-collateral loan.Other scholarships were especially meant for American citizens and their minorities.
  • Yes one of my American Batchmate received a masters merit award. In my masters program, it is 1 student per year.

Scholarship

  • Only 2 international students receive scholarships in our department (either full or partial), the number is very low.
  • I got awarded a Graduate Student Instructor position, for which I had to apply and interview. It is basically a teaching position, where you have to teach lab sections, grade papers, etc.
  • I got my semester tuition waived under that and also received a monthly stipend of around 3000 USD something approximately for working 20 hours every week.

Scholarship

  • Sometimes people get scholarships, and there are a lot of ways in which we can get course fees waived off, such as becoming research assistants, graders, GSIs, or RAs. If not, one will have to pay the whole fee.
  • Some of my batchmates, who are mostly American citizens, have managed to get scholarships but partially. I am not sure how many students receive scholarships every year.

Academics and locations. It was definitely a work hard play hard experience. I also wanted a school with school spirit and a good sports program that was not too far from home.

Overview

The reason I chose to go to the USA was the economic stability and a very systematic education system. It's much easier to stay here than in other countries according to me. The University of Michigan was ranked no. 4 in USA for civil engineering when I joined. However, the major factors were the course structure, flexibility in taking courses outside of the department, and research opportunities and funds. U of M being an R1 University is one of the highest funded Universities in the USA. As for the flexibility in coursework, I took half of the credits for my degree from outside of the department which gave me knowledge and insights of various other disciplines. All sorts of career opportunities can be achieved here. There are various career fairs and workshops to help students improve their resumes, network with potential employers and get well-earning jobs. The name of the University itself weighs a lot and it's not very difficult to get a job even during the recession. My overall experience in the past 2 years has been excellent and I have enjoyed my time here to the fullest. I did great in my academics, learned various subjects, networked with people, participated in various student-run organizations on campus, and made plenty of friends. My experience during my Master's was awesome and hence I decided to pursue my PhD from the same University.

Overview

"Yes, I submitted SoP, 3 LoRs, CV. Interview for the PhD program was technical - questions about my field, and past projects. No implementation questions were asked, only conceptual. " My advisor is my most preferred advisor in my field, university also ranks well in terms of rankings and reputation. Overall experience has been really good. It is filled with diverse learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. The vibrant campus life, and supportive faculty, fostered an environment of growth and discovery. We can also engage in various clubs and organizations which helps develop leadership skills. Research collaboration opportunities are immense, this helps me as a PhD student to understand various perspectives of a problem I am trying to work on.

Yes I received the HAIL Scholarship for the University of Michigan. It covers all of my tuition for each semester, and I simply applied for it while I was in high school and I would end up being eligible for it if I was accepted.
