- The resources the university provides are immense in every aspect.
- The faculty are are definitely among the top researchers and academics in the US
- The infrastructure in the university provides is modern and has all the latest technology.
Dislikes
- The university is not inherently bad it just boils down to how you fair here and what you can do with your time here.
- The job market is not on your side it never was it never will be. As mentioned in the previous point, it is you who can help you. Coming to the University of Michigan does not mean you will get a job with a 100% guarantee.
- Fees is pretty high and scholarships are not provided to everyone. Please dont take huge amounts of loans to come here and study. The risk to reward ratio is quite high.
Placement
- Honestly, full-time jobs are a whole different animal and I personally cannot tell you much because I am still in that situation. I do not know any metrics of how many students got jobs but in my program it is relatively scarce because I’m from Aerospace and in this field it is not easy to get a job, at least for foreign nationals.
- And in other fields I don’t know how easy or difficult it is to secure a job, but I know a handful of my friends from CS, industrial and automotive secured a job.
- You may find accommodation through various online means and also it is not hard to find accommodation on and off campus. You may also find roommates through chat groups and resources provided by the university. Rent can easily go from $500 to $13,000 per month depending upon your situation. I really recommend on-campus housing. You have amazing connectivity throughout the city so not an issue.

- Great Infrastructure & resources
- Easy access to learned professors
- Curriculum is as close as it gets to something being used in the industry
Dislikes
- Expensive
- Your entire time is pretty much consumed by the course work (beneficial at the end of the day though)
- Campus is very vast. Getting around could prove a little difficult especially during winters
Placement
- The majority of the students were placed within 6 months.
- The average pay could be around 75000 USD per annum for our department but this could be a lot higher for CS or EE departments. Closer to 100,000 USD.
- The university organises a career fair every semester; this is a great networking event and a lot of students do find internship opportunities at such events. Internships could be a good way to land full-time roles eventually.
- A lot of tier 1 and tier 2 supplier companies hire international students and offer H1B sponsorship. This is a major differentiator; a lot of companies do not offer that, therefore leaving out many options for international students. The major automotive OEMs do not offer first-time H1B sponsorship, which was a big surprise for all of us.
- Any company that is local to Michigan has their highest preferred student recruits from UofM Ann Arbor
- However, this is not to say only Michigan companies hire the students. The degree is highly valued by companies like Apple, Tesla, Google, Toyota, Bosch
- The majority of the students make a good network through LinkedIn and eventually convert those connections to interviews at the least
- I used Facebook Marketplace initially. I used a lot of websites from Google searches as well. I couldn’t get a solid response though, so joined a WhatsApp group where I was constantly posting for a room requirement. I got a few responses but couldn’t solidify anything until the last week before flying out to the US. So ideally start at least 3-4 months earlier.
- A little further away from the college centre, I paid 600 USD for an entire room in 2B 1B layout.
- Later I moved closer to the university, where the rent per room was 800 USD. However, I was sharing that room, so effectively 400 USD. The on-campus accommodation is slightly expensive, close to 700 per room but that includes utilities and usually could come out to be 50-100 USD extra otherwise.
- Most Indians stay closer to the campus, spread across a few apartments communities
- The most common apartment Indian stay is about 10-15 minutes away on a bus, which is free for UofM students.
- Also, you have to be ready to pay at least 1 month of rent as a deposit and at least 2 months of notice while vacating. If you have to break the lease, you would end up paying that 2 months rent or the full amount of the remaining term in some cases.

- University and faculties offer a great support, Highly Diverse International Community and Activities
- Good Career Resources and Counselling
- UofM has a great Funding , widely spaced and great infrastructure
Dislikes
- Severe Weather of Ann Arbor its mostly cold half of the year
- Ann Arbor is not as developed as other US metropolitan cities
- I love the university ,don't have much to comment on the disliking , it is very inclusive, friendly and reputed university.
Placement
- There is a high chance that UM students get into jobs , due to its reputation , university connection , alumni network and also students are also remarkable in their work .
- The average salary of one with Engineering goes upto $100,000. There are many company exhibitions , takes place , where students meet with the recruiter and than hand out their CV to them .
- I don't have closure on the exact percentage , but it is decent . Also online platforms and Handshake has a tie up with UMich to help students find jobs. Linkedin is the ultimate platform though.
- I opted for Off-campus housing of 3-bhk apartment , shared by 5 girls , 2 master bedroom is shared by 2 girls, whereas a small room is shared by one-girl.
- The rent for my shared spot is $500 and with wifi $12/ per person and electricity comes between $25-40/ person , it goes high during winters.
- The accommodation takes 30 mins from my college , I have to change 2 buses , though the frequency of buses is in every 10-30 mins , so I basically have to plan and depart 1 hour early .

- The amazing faculty in my department, they were all super talented professionals, researchers and incredibly kind, respectful. They were all very responsive too.
- Access to a lot of resources that promotes inclusivity, that are not restricted to your department alone. For example, there were people who couldn't have their own laptop, the University had a loaning program where you could use a laptop for free throughout the semester.
- Great connectivity. Ann Arbor public buses (in addition to UM buses) are free for students, the university also offers super cheap rides to the airport for holiday seasons. The International Center also offers to ride students for short trips, visiting the mall, etc sometimes.
Dislikes
- Super expensive in comparison to other colleges in the US, even though it is a public institution. You can waive off fees if you get a research assistant or teaching assistant position though (unfortunately super competitive in comparison to places like UT Austin, Georgia Tech, Purdue, UIUC etc). I got by because of that.
- Location is not great. I work in tech, there aren't a lot of opportunities in the MidWest as compared to the East and West Coasts. But attending remote networking events were my solution to this issue.
- The winters are super cold and harsh, it can get very gloomy at times, especially when the sun sets at 4PM and you have to walk back home through the snow.
Placement
-
All of this heavily depends on the market.
-
A lot of people who graduated from my course haven't secured a full-time job but that wasn't the case in 2020, 21, 22 when the tech market was booming. I would expect someone to earn 100k after graduation.
-
People usually look for jobs online - on LinkedIn, Handshake, Indeed and also attend conferences for networking that are funded by the University.
- Using WhatsApp groups, people used spreadsheets to capture their information and find roommates. For the first year, my rent was 500$ including utilities for a shared bedroom in Central Campus.
- I was living with someone I already knew in Michigan, so I did not face any challenges when it came to finding accommodation. The North Campus is relatively cheaper, and bus service is also very reliant.
- I would suggest looking there instead of Central Campus if you are okay with things not being super lively in your immediate vicinity.

- High cost for education
- Winters can be really tough
- Amount of assignments is huge and pressurizing!
Placement
- Based on our past history, people do manage to get good jobs and work post completion. There are various career fairs organised throughout the year for students to make contacts and make connections with the industry experts and representatives.
- Other than this, the university has several means of events where people can build contacts with other alumnus and industry members.
- I opted for off campus accommodation with help of contacts through whatsapp groups from the university groups. The monthly rent is around 50p-600$ per month including utilities.
- I would suggest students to go for sharing rooms in the beginning and spend more time in the university than spending a lot on accommodation. My accommodation is close to the North campus is 25mins to three Central campus.

Dislikes
- Only dislike is that it can be too big at times and it is very cold. Otherwise all of the above are great!
Placement
Lots of companies came to visit big and small with career fairs and private events. 95% either got a good job or went to graduate school and most people started out earning $70k USD or more.
Academics and locations. It was definitely a work hard play hard experience. I also wanted a school with school spirit and a good sports program that was not too far from home.

- The education system is very straightforward and the marking system is very clear.
- Education focuses on basic concepts rather than textbook definitions and memorizing things.
- The research opportunities at my University are plenty and very well funded.
Dislikes
- The transportation is not that good, especially during winters.
- The rent is high and on-campus housing is very random and limited.
- The tuition for a master's program is very expensive with very limited TA/RA positions.
Placement
The placement is amazing at our University. All of my friends who graduated from the master's program have been placed in huge companies such as KPFF, TY Lin, Black and Veatch, etc. Companies that visit our University include Tesla, SpaceX, Lucid, Google, and many other major companies. Most of the topmost national laboratories visited too but they offer positions preferably to US citizens. The median salary depends on the location. In Ann Arbor for a civil engineering master's the median salary is around 70k USD per year.
The reason I chose to go to the USA was the economic stability and a very systematic education system. It's much easier to stay here than in other countries according to me. The University of Michigan was ranked no. 4 in USA for civil engineering when I joined. However, the major factors were the course structure, flexibility in taking courses outside of the department, and research opportunities and funds. U of M being an R1 University is one of the highest funded Universities in the USA. As for the flexibility in coursework, I took half of the credits for my degree from outside of the department which gave me knowledge and insights of various other disciplines. All sorts of career opportunities can be achieved here. There are various career fairs and workshops to help students improve their resumes, network with potential employers and get well-earning jobs. The name of the University itself weighs a lot and it's not very difficult to get a job even during the recession. My overall experience in the past 2 years has been excellent and I have enjoyed my time here to the fullest. I did great in my academics, learned various subjects, networked with people, participated in various student-run organizations on campus, and made plenty of friends. My experience during my Master's was awesome and hence I decided to pursue my PhD from the same University.

- Flexiblity in my research on a topic I am passionate about. Also, everyone in my lab is welcoming and helpful - no judgments. There's a lot of events ongoing that helps me network and possible collaboration opportunities among different fields.
Dislikes
- Just the winters here sometimes get very long, so the first year can be an adjustment, specially for people from our countries, since we are usually not used to long winters.
Placement
I can talk about opportunities after a PhD here - many top industries like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Meta hire for research scientist roles, etc. Many students also go to universities as tenure track professors.
"Yes, I submitted SoP, 3 LoRs, CV. Interview for the PhD program was technical - questions about my field, and past projects. No implementation questions were asked, only conceptual. " My advisor is my most preferred advisor in my field, university also ranks well in terms of rankings and reputation. Overall experience has been really good. It is filled with diverse learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. The vibrant campus life, and supportive faculty, fostered an environment of growth and discovery. We can also engage in various clubs and organizations which helps develop leadership skills. Research collaboration opportunities are immense, this helps me as a PhD student to understand various perspectives of a problem I am trying to work on.

- U-M is not only known for its strong academics, but I also love the campus life it has. It was also very appealing to me as well since it’s only 45 minutes away from home

As I am only an undergraduate I do not know too much about the post-study programs here, I do plan on applying to medical school here however, and from what I do know, U of M has a very good medical school.
I have really enjoyed my time at the University of Michigan. Not only have I enjoyed the degree program that I am currently doing, but I have had the pleasure of meeting some great faculty and students who I’m sure will help me in my future as a potential medical student.

The university holds a career fair every semester for job and internship. All the firms over USA come to recruit.
University of Michigan is an extremely professional university with tons of different departments and amazing professors. The experience they hold is amazing and they are extremely approachable and always available over email. The university also targets student’s safety on day to day basis.
