Course Curriculum

8

  • The courses are pretty intensive, mine being a research track focussed masters , so I had my classes along with PhD students . And grading is based on the class curve , which means based on class average you will be graded A, A-,B, which I personally don't like , like recently I scored 92/100 , but as the class average went to 94 , I will be graded B for that particular course exam .
  • The classes have a mixture of PPT presentations and chalk talk , which I personally like it and the exams are 24 hours take home exams , where code of conduct taken very very seriously. So this is kind of the positive aspect of the course , everyone's mark is original to themselves, no cheating at all.

Admission Experience

  • 2 US universities i applied in , as there were less US universities that offered MS in Human Genetics , UofM and Northeastern University I received confirmed admission. Additionally I applied in MS Human Genetics and Diseases in UCL, MS Medical Genetics and Genomics at University of Glasgow I received confirmed admission. Other Universities I applied for PhD and got rejected as an International Student , they were expecting more Research Experience and Publication.

  • UofM and UCL had a tie for my decision , both of them are top universities in their respective countries, but I selected UofM because of the OPT options I will get after graduation , in US it is 3 years whereas in UK it is 2 years . Additionally in US it is comparatively easy to get a fully-funded PhD than in UK for international students. And also the job market of US is comparatively flexible compared to UK . UK being a small country the chances of getting selected for the job is 1 out of 100 applications, whereas UK being a bigger country the chances of getting a job is comparatively higher , however , it is challenging in both the countries.

  • I applied for FALL 2024, I RECEIVED MY ADMISSION OFFER LETTER IN APRIL 1ST , and from there it took me june 29th to receive I-20 and process with my VISA. By APRIL -15 , I was requested to submit my passport and financial documents to verify and process my I-20.By April 20 , I received my I-20 . Next was the serious step of applying for US visa. The filling of DS-160 took time and verifying the details entered as it is very crucial , as if mistaken I have to refill a new application again. Further getting US -visa slot was really challenging , finally I managed to receive my VISA slot on June 29th. I earlier visited theUS on a J1 visa, so I was eligible for dropbox. I got my slot in Chennai , but I dropped my Visa documents in Kolkata consular . Further it took time till july 20 to track my new F1 visa and get it by post at my place.

Faculty

8

  • Total course strength is 60 , but the faculties are always open to answer queries in classes and mails. The methodology involves research papers, ppt and some concepts will chalk talk, and sharing review papers , thinking outside the box about research , they want to us to be true critic to research .
  • Yes the academic advisor are always available to help and support students , mine being a year research intensive course , so my advisor emphasised to focus on the coursework than focussing on part-time as it will become very overwhelming.Dr.Jake Mueller's classes are mostly focussed on chalk-talk and I truly enjoyed his classes.

Campus Life

8

  • 3 campuses , North - Mostly has Engineering Department , Central: Hospital ,Law , Human Genetics(My Department ) , it is near Downtown , much of a happening area of of Ann Arbor , South Campus has Management and Football Stadium (one of the largest Football stadium in the US ) .
  • Additionally it has many libraries , and food spots , one is called Dudhastate , it has its library open 24 X 7 .
  • One of the Library in my department is Tauberman Health Sciences library, it has MPRINT option for all students to free printing upto $24

Part Time Jobs

  • In Engineering ,Masters students are allowed for TA, RA post , where as in the Department of Genetics , it is mostly secured by the PhDs .

  • I'm not really sure about the pay range , but it will be good for sure. For Masters International student , we are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week . It is competitive , I has be responsible enough , but if one is determined and consistently applying , then one can secure a part-time job pretty soon.

  • $11-20/hour , depends on the job . It is pretty competitive though as both undergrad as well as MS students compete , but MDining services are easy to get . Also , if you stick on and keep searching , you will find one very soon.University has a website to search for parttime , and you will also get notifications to apply. You have to attach your cOVER LETTER , rESUME , thEN iNTERVIEW , THEN YOU HAVE TO PROCESS SSN and I-90 before starting with your part-time officially.

Placement

6

  • There is a high chance that UM students get into jobs , due to its reputation , university connection , alumni network and also students are also remarkable in their work .
  • The average salary of one with Engineering goes upto $100,000. There are many company exhibitions , takes place , where students meet with the recruiter and than hand out their CV to them .
  • I don't have closure on the exact percentage , but it is decent . Also online platforms and Handshake has a tie up with UMich to help students find jobs. Linkedin is the ultimate platform though.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • I opted for Off-campus housing of 3-bhk apartment , shared by 5 girls , 2 master bedroom is shared by 2 girls, whereas a small room is shared by one-girl.
  • The rent for my shared spot is $500 and with wifi $12/ per person and electricity comes between $25-40/ person , it goes high during winters.
  • The accommodation takes 30 mins from my college , I have to change 2 buses , though the frequency of buses is in every 10-30 mins , so I basically have to plan and depart 1 hour early .

Exams

  • IELTS , GRE (optional these days), SOP, Personal Statement,CV, Transcripts (these documents are very important , remember as UofM is a prestigious university, the applications are competitive , so be aware to work on these documents , and try to convince the admission committee why you should be chosen for the program over others).
  • For my program there was no interviews fortunately ,
  • I was solely selected based on my application and my undergraduate performance.

Fees

  • $27,360/semester, the payment needs to be done through FLYWIRE, as UM prefers only Flywire way of Payment for Education Loans especially, it is charged in 2 installments per semester , but students also have the option of paying in 5 EMI installments of tuition fees per semester as well.
  • Additionally my monthly expenses comes upto $1000 , as my accommodation rent is around $600, UM health insurance charges monthly $250, and an extra $100 for grocery and other miscellaneous expenses.

Scholarship

  • No , I didn't but I was eligible for UBI's scheme of Vidya Lakshmi Education Loan, where a students admitted in world's some of the top colleges , will receive a non-collateral loan of INR 40 lakhs, with less ROI of 9.75%, which is really cheap for non-collateral loan.Other scholarships were especially meant for American citizens and their minorities.
  • Yes one of my American Batchmate received a masters merit award. In my masters program, it is 1 student per year.
