UNT publishes fixed out-of-state tuition rates every academic year, with competitive scholarships of USD 1,000 or more converting to the in-state rate, which can cut tuition by roughly half for qualifying international students. Indian applicants pursuing STEM masters can use the USA study guide to plan the F-1 visa, I-20 timeline and post-study work pathway alongside their UNT application.

Insider note: MS Computer Science and MS Business Analytics draw the largest Indian cohorts at UNT, both because they are STEM-designated (36-month OPT) and because a USD 1,000+ scholarship converts the applicant to the in-state tuition rate.

University of North Texas Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

The core academic bar at UNT is a recognised bachelor’s degree with a strong GPA plus a valid English proficiency score; extra requirements apply to Business and PhD tracks.

  • Graduate academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with minimum 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended; official policy states "3.0 GPA on 4.0 scale"); WES or equivalent credential evaluation of Indian transcripts
  • English proficiency (verbatim, official): TOEFL iBT 79 (legacy 0-120 scale) or 4 (1-6 scale for tests from 21 January 2026), IELTS Academic 6.0 overall, Duolingo English Test 100, PTE Academic 53, Cambridge C1 Advanced, or MET section scores 54; MBA/MS Business and PhD programmes require TOEFL iBT 83
  • Undergraduate academic: Class 12 with 70% to 85% (recommended); one accepted secondary English test (SAT English 560, ACT English 21, or the same TOEFL/IELTS/DET/PTE bands)
  • Waiver route: TOEFL/IELTS can be waived if the Indian bachelor’s is officially certified as English-medium instruction (MOI letter required)

[Source: UNT English Language Requirements page]

Key insight: UNT reports TOEFL iBT on both the legacy 0-120 scale and the new 1-6 band scale during 2026-2028; submit the score with the scale label the test centre issues, and do not manually convert.

University of North Texas Acceptance Rate 2027

UNT does not publish a single official annual acceptance rate for international applicants, but third-party data derived from federal enrolment reports places it at 74% (estimated) overall, with a tighter 35% to 45% (estimated) band for competitive graduate STEM and Business masters.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
202574% (estimated)Stable
202472% (estimated)Broadly flat
202378% (estimated)Slight tightening

The headline rate reflects the full applicant pool. Individual graduate departments, especially MS Business Analytics and MS Computer Science, screen more selectively for GPA, prerequisites and prior research or work experience.

Reality check: A 74% overall rate does not mean easy entry for Indian PG applicants; the department, not the university, makes the final call, and STEM master’s cohorts often filter to a low 40% acceptance band.

University of North Texas Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UNT sits on a 900-acre main campus in Denton, a 40-minute drive from the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, with a second campus in downtown Dallas for the College of Law.

  • Location and transport: Denton is on Interstate 35 with the UNT shuttle serving all major apartment clusters free of charge; DART and DCTA rail link the campus to Dallas
  • Housing: On-campus housing is guaranteed for first-year undergraduates only; roughly 30% of the total student body lives off campus in the Fry Street and Bonnie Brae clusters
  • Notable facilities: Willis Library and the Discovery Park research complex host the College of Engineering and its wind-tunnel and cybersecurity labs
  • Indian student community: UNT enrols students from 141 countries with an active Indian Students Association hosting Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events each academic year

What Indian students say: Rent and grocery costs are meaningfully lower than in Houston or Austin, on-campus TA roles are competitive but attainable after the first semester, and the shuttle removes the need for a car in the first year.

University of North Texas Scholarships 2027

UNT distributes more than USD 49 million in scholarships and USD 380 million in financial aid each year; a handful of merit routes are open to Indian applicants, and any USD 1,000+ competitive award triggers the in-state tuition rate.

Insider note: The in-state tuition conversion is worth more than most named scholarships. Any competitive award of USD 1,000 or above drops the tuition bill by roughly USD 15,000 a year for an out-of-state graduate.

University of North Texas Rankings 2027

UNT’s strongest ranking is its QS World University Rankings 2027 placement of #1001-1200, marking its first entry into the QS top 1,000; on the domestic side, US News lists UNT at #208 among National Universities (a US-only tier separate from its regional listing).

[Source: QS, THE, US News, ARWU, Collegedunia Study Abroad]

Key insight: Entry into the QS top 1,000 matters for Indian students because most Indian education loan lenders (SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Prodigy) tier interest rates by QS-ranked bracket, and UNT now sits in the standard rather than exception band.

University of North Texas Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UNT does not publish a single university-wide placement percentage; the Career Center reports strong outcomes for STEM and Business masters through Handshake and on-campus recruiter events.

  • Median starting salary (MS graduates): USD 65,000 to USD 85,000 per year (INR 62.2 lakh to INR 81.4 lakh, market median across Indian STEM masters in the DFW metro)
  • Median post-MBA salary: USD 75,000 to USD 95,000 per year (INR 71.8 lakh to INR 91.0 lakh, market median)
  • Top hiring sectors: Technology, financial services, energy, aerospace and defense, and retail analytics (representative sectors from Career Center employer directories)
  • Career support: UNT Career Center runs a mandatory Career Readiness programme, plus targeted STEM career fairs each Fall and Spring; F-1 STEM masters graduates qualify for 36 months of OPT
  • Indian alumni notes: UNT alumni include senior engineers and analysts at Texas Instruments, AT&T, PepsiCo and American Airlines, all headquartered in the DFW metro

Insider note: The Dallas-Fort Worth metro is UNT’s biggest placement advantage — 24 Fortune 500 companies are headquartered within 45 miles of Denton, and most run rolling on-campus interviews rather than one-shot placement weeks.

University of North Texas vs Peer Universities

The peers below sit in the same Texas or R1 public tier that Indian STEM and Business applicants typically shortlist alongside UNT, with QS ranks and PG fees compared on a like-for-like basis.

UniversityQS World 2027Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026Avg Annual PG FeeDifferentiator
University of North Texas#1001-1200#197USD 18,000 (INR 17.2 lakh)Lowest fee in the DFW metro; in-state conversion on scholarship
University of Texas at Dallas#601-800 (band, estimated)NAUSD 25,000 (INR 23.9 lakh) (estimated)Stronger CS reputation; higher fee
University of Texas at Arlington#801-1000 (band, estimated)NAUSD 22,000 (INR 21.1 lakh) (estimated)Larger Indian cohort; Arlington location
Texas Tech University#801-1000 (band, estimated)NAUSD 20,000 (INR 19.2 lakh) (estimated)Strong Engineering; smaller-town Lubbock setting
University of Houston#601-800 (band, estimated)NAUSD 24,000 (INR 22.9 lakh) (estimated)Energy and petroleum focus; larger metro

UNT stands out for its combination of a QS top-1,200 rank, the lowest published PG tuition among peer Texas R1 publics, and the in-state conversion pathway that a single competitive scholarship unlocks. That said, UT Dallas and UT Arlington carry stronger name recall with US recruiters in Computer Science specifically.

The University of North Texas fits an Indian applicant targeting a STEM masters at a total two-year investment of INR 55 lakh to INR 75 lakh (tuition plus living), where the DFW metro’s Fortune 500 density supports a starting salary of USD 65,000-plus and the 36-month STEM OPT protects the post-study work window without an H-1B lottery in year one.

UNT is not the right fit for an applicant chasing top-100 QS brand recognition, or for one who cannot fund the first semester upfront while awaiting scholarship confirmation; in that case, UT Arlington offers a similar cost base with a larger Indian cohort and comparable outcomes.

University of North Texas FAQs

Ques. Does UNT waive the IELTS if my bachelor’s was English-medium?

Ans. Yes. UNT waives TOEFL and IELTS if your Indian bachelor’s degree was officially taught in English medium. You must submit a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter on university letterhead, signed by the registrar, confirming the language of instruction and examination. The waiver applies to most UG and standard PG programmes but not to MBA, MS Business, or PhD tracks, which retain their TOEFL iBT 83 requirement even for MOI holders.

Ques. Can Indian students work on campus at the University of North Texas?

Ans. Yes. F-1 students at UNT can work on campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week during official breaks. Typical roles include library assistants, dining services, IT helpdesk, and departmental graduate assistantships. A Teaching or Research Assistantship of USD 1,000 or more per semester also unlocks the in-state tuition rate, which is often more valuable than the stipend itself.

Ques. Is GRE required for MS admission at UNT?

Ans. GRE is optional for most UNT masters, including MS Computer Science, MS Data Science and MS Business Analytics. Departments may still recommend it if your undergraduate GPA is below the 3.0/4.0 threshold or if you are competing for departmental funding. PhD programmes typically require GRE, and specific engineering tracks list it as strongly recommended, so check the departmental page before deciding.

Ques. Which Indian banks fund education loans for UNT?

Ans. UNT sits inside the standard QS top-1,200 bracket, so it is on the approved list of SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI, Bank of Baroda, Avanse, Auxilo and Prodigy Finance. Unsecured loans up to INR 40 lakh are common with a co-applicant. Prodigy and MPOWER also lend without an Indian co-signer for STEM masters, using future US salary as the underwriting anchor.

Ques. Can my spouse and children accompany me to UNT on a dependent visa?

Ans. Yes. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 qualify for the F-2 dependent visa. UNT requires proof of additional funds of roughly USD 5,000 per dependent per year in the financial documents you submit for the I-20. F-2 spouses cannot work in the US, but they can study part-time and children can attend K-12 public schools free of charge in Denton Independent School District.

Ques. What is the application fee at the University of North Texas?

Ans. UNT charges USD 85 (INR 8,140) for international undergraduate applications submitted through ApplyTexas or the Common Application, and USD 75 (INR 7,182) for international graduate applications submitted through UNT Graduate CAS. The fee is non-refundable and must be paid by credit card at submission. UNT does not publish a standing application fee waiver for international applicants, so budget it into your application spend.

Ques. How does UNT verify Indian academic transcripts?

Ans. UNT accepts World Education Services (WES) ICAP evaluations as the primary route for Indian transcript verification, and also accepts Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) and SpanTran. Order the course-by-course report with GPA calculation and route it directly to UNT International Admissions. Start 8 to 12 weeks before the deadline because WES processing from Indian universities can take four to six weeks alone.

Ques. What is the STEM OPT extension at UNT and which programmes qualify?

Ans. OPT gives F-1 graduates 12 months of US work authorisation, and the STEM OPT extension adds another 24 months, totalling 36 months. At UNT, all Computer Science, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Business Analytics, Information Systems, Engineering and most Mathematics masters carry official STEM CIP codes. MBA and non-STEM MS programmes get only the base 12 months, so confirm the CIP code on the programme page before you enrol.

Overview

The overall experience at the University of North Texas (UNT) is a vibrant mix of knowledgeable faculty, well-stocked libraries, and state-of-the-art facilities like the game development lab and Olympic-grade gym, with some challenges such as parking and limited course availability.

Campus life: Perfect mix of a serious education and a party school Clubs: You have clubs for anything that is in your mind, from a debaters to the cricketers everything, to hackers you will have a lot of fun. Wifi: The WIFI connectivity is available all over the campus. You will never have a slow or a choppy connection anywhere in the campus. You are also provided with a Mobile phone connection from the college which is very cheap and still workable. Not very good but for 15$ per month you get a 5 GB cellular data with unlimited calls local and international. I have been using this for 4 months now and has not bothered me at all. You can get better cell phone connections for 35 40$ per month, but in my case I am very satisfied. Sport Facility: UNT is very famous for its football, basket ball and baseball teams. The gym has olympic grade equipment and a very large indoor running track, swimming pool and playing area. There are many common areas in every campus where you will have pool and pingpong tables. The University also has a gaming area where you will find all the available consoles and latest games, and gaming PCs which can be used by anyone free of cost. Students come and play games for as long as they want.

The UNT offers a variety of scholarships for international and domestic students, funded by the university itself, government agencies, research councils, and external bodies. However, check the available scholarships, their benefits, and eligibility for the UNT scholarships.

UNT likely has an online application portal where you can check the status of your application. However, you can explore the UNT courses to learn more about the curriculum, fees, and other details.
