UNT Application Tips for Indian Students

The following application tips can help Indian students improve their admission and funding chances at University of North Texas.

  • Apply early to UNT for the best funding chance: Master's applicants should apply by February 1, 2026 for Fall 2026 for the best TA/RA consideration. PhD funding by March 1.
  • Strong SOP is critical: 500-1000 words explaining why UNT, why this programme, and your specific research/career goals. Mention specific UNT faculty for PhD applications.
  • Apply for Competitive Scholarship Waiver: Any UNT competitive scholarship of $1,000+ allows you to pay Texas-resident tuition (saves $12,000+/year, ₹11.52 Lakhs). Apply for Excellence Scholarship and Global Citizen Scholarship.
  • GRE Q 160+ helps strongly: Average UNT MS CS admit GRE Q is ~158; aiming for Q 160+ improves chances at funding.
  • For MS Computer Science / Engineering: Show strong PCM/CS subjects, programming portfolio, and relevant internships.
  • For MBA: Show 2-5 years work experience and explain career goals clearly. UNT MBA accepts GMAT 550+ which is more accessible than top US business schools.
  • Submit unofficial transcripts initially: UNT accepts scanned/PDF transcripts; official sealed transcripts required only after admission. This speeds up the application.
  • Apply to multiple Master's programmes at UNT: MS Information Science, MS Data Science, MS CS are all accessible; spread your application risk.
  • Apply for PhD if you have research experience: Funded PhDs (tuition waiver + stipend $22,000-$30,000/year) are far better ROI than self-funded Master's.
  • Contact UNT faculty in advance for PhD: Email potential PhD advisors before applying to show research fit.

Scholarship

  • I had applied to eagle scholarship as in every student applies for that but I haven't heard anyone get that. After all research from so many sources in conclusion - No scholarships for Masters Students at UNT. No one has received since past 3 years as per previous students and professors knowledge.
  • Unlike master's students, undergraduate (bachelor's degree) students at the University of North Texas (UNT) have access to scholarship opportunities. These scholarships can help reduce the cost of tuition and may be awarded based on various factors, such as academic performance, extracurricular involvement, financial need, or specific fields of study.
  • If you work on campus at Library or Teaching/research assistant position you get wavier, and you pay 40% less tuition.

Scholarship

  • The scholarships can be accessed through the Eagle Scholarship Portal of the University of North Texas. Most of the scholarships are applied after one year of study at the university. The university provides scholarships of up to $1,000 (500$ for fall, 500$ for spring). Students can also apply for an in-state tuition fee waiver after getting a scholarship.
  • I received a Texas Public Education Grant of $500 for the fall 2024 semester.
  • On average, 5-10% of the students receive scholarships every year.

The overall experience at the University of North Texas (UNT) is a vibrant mix of knowledgeable faculty, well-stocked libraries, and state-of-the-art facilities like the game development lab and Olympic-grade gym, with some challenges such as parking and limited course availability.

I got a Library Student Assistant position which comes with a 40% tuition waiver and a monthly stipend of $1200. Just had to apply for the post, submit my resume and a face to face interview.
