- The resources the university provides are immense in every aspect.
- The faculty are are definitely among the top researchers and academics in the US
- The infrastructure in the university provides is modern and has all the latest technology.
Dislikes
- The university is not inherently bad it just boils down to how you fair here and what you can do with your time here.
- The job market is not on your side it never was it never will be. As mentioned in the previous point, it is you who can help you. Coming to the University of Michigan does not mean you will get a job with a 100% guarantee.
- Fees is pretty high and scholarships are not provided to everyone. Please dont take huge amounts of loans to come here and study. The risk to reward ratio is quite high.
Campus Life
- Umich has the central campus and the northern campus. First or second week of the fall semester is Festifall; hundreds of organizations set up on the Diag and talk to people who might want to join. That's the best way to find something besides searching Maize Pages.
- If you have an interest, there is almost definitely an org around it. Search maize pages and send an email to them in the fall.
Accommodation
- You may find accommodation through various online means and also it is not hard to find accommodation on and off campus. You may also find roommates through chat groups and resources provided by the university. Rent can easily go from $500 to $13,000 per month depending upon your situation. I really recommend on-campus housing. You have amazing connectivity throughout the city so not an issue.

- Great Infrastructure & resources
- Easy access to learned professors
- Curriculum is as close as it gets to something being used in the industry
Dislikes
- Expensive
- Your entire time is pretty much consumed by the course work (beneficial at the end of the day though)
- Campus is very vast. Getting around could prove a little difficult especially during winters
Campus Life
- It’s essentially divided into 3 sides. North campus, central campus, and south campus. However, these are just in Ann Arbour. There is U of M Dearborn and Flint as well.
- All kinds of facilities are available and mostly free to access for students. You could book yourself a ride to home late in the night as well and it’s free of charge.
- For all Indian festivals, ISA (Indian Student Association) organises an event where students gather to celebrate. There are independent private parties or celebrations as well where smaller pockets of student gather
- Recreational centres are the primary sports centres and have all the sports you could imagine. There’s heated Olympic-size pools as well.
Accommodation
- I used Facebook Marketplace initially. I used a lot of websites from Google searches as well. I couldn’t get a solid response though, so joined a WhatsApp group where I was constantly posting for a room requirement. I got a few responses but couldn’t solidify anything until the last week before flying out to the US. So ideally start at least 3-4 months earlier.
- A little further away from the college centre, I paid 600 USD for an entire room in 2B 1B layout.
- Later I moved closer to the university, where the rent per room was 800 USD. However, I was sharing that room, so effectively 400 USD. The on-campus accommodation is slightly expensive, close to 700 per room but that includes utilities and usually could come out to be 50-100 USD extra otherwise.
- Most Indians stay closer to the campus, spread across a few apartments communities
- The most common apartment Indian stay is about 10-15 minutes away on a bus, which is free for UofM students.
- Also, you have to be ready to pay at least 1 month of rent as a deposit and at least 2 months of notice while vacating. If you have to break the lease, you would end up paying that 2 months rent or the full amount of the remaining term in some cases.

- University and faculties offer a great support, Highly Diverse International Community and Activities
- Good Career Resources and Counselling
- UofM has a great Funding , widely spaced and great infrastructure
Dislikes
- Severe Weather of Ann Arbor its mostly cold half of the year
- Ann Arbor is not as developed as other US metropolitan cities
- I love the university ,don't have much to comment on the disliking , it is very inclusive, friendly and reputed university.
Campus Life
- 3 campuses , North - Mostly has Engineering Department , Central: Hospital ,Law , Human Genetics(My Department ) , it is near Downtown , much of a happening area of of Ann Arbor , South Campus has Management and Football Stadium (one of the largest Football stadium in the US ) .
- Additionally it has many libraries , and food spots , one is called Dudhastate , it has its library open 24 X 7 .
- One of the Library in my department is Tauberman Health Sciences library, it has MPRINT option for all students to free printing upto $24
Accommodation
- I opted for Off-campus housing of 3-bhk apartment , shared by 5 girls , 2 master bedroom is shared by 2 girls, whereas a small room is shared by one-girl.
- The rent for my shared spot is $500 and with wifi $12/ per person and electricity comes between $25-40/ person , it goes high during winters.
- The accommodation takes 30 mins from my college , I have to change 2 buses , though the frequency of buses is in every 10-30 mins , so I basically have to plan and depart 1 hour early .

- The amazing faculty in my department, they were all super talented professionals, researchers and incredibly kind, respectful. They were all very responsive too.
- Access to a lot of resources that promotes inclusivity, that are not restricted to your department alone. For example, there were people who couldn't have their own laptop, the University had a loaning program where you could use a laptop for free throughout the semester.
- Great connectivity. Ann Arbor public buses (in addition to UM buses) are free for students, the university also offers super cheap rides to the airport for holiday seasons. The International Center also offers to ride students for short trips, visiting the mall, etc sometimes.
Dislikes
- Super expensive in comparison to other colleges in the US, even though it is a public institution. You can waive off fees if you get a research assistant or teaching assistant position though (unfortunately super competitive in comparison to places like UT Austin, Georgia Tech, Purdue, UIUC etc). I got by because of that.
- Location is not great. I work in tech, there aren't a lot of opportunities in the MidWest as compared to the East and West Coasts. But attending remote networking events were my solution to this issue.
- The winters are super cold and harsh, it can get very gloomy at times, especially when the sun sets at 4PM and you have to walk back home through the snow.
Campus Life
- Three, Ann Arbor is the main campus and there is also Dearborn and Flint.
- A number of libraries (a little too many, you can study at a new library every month for two years literally), sports facilities (two recreational facilities on campus and a number of other paid options), and medical services (there is a big Michigan Medicine hospital) are available.
- Football is major here, the Michigan stadium is the biggest one in the US, so it gets super crazy during football season. You can participate in a snow fight at the Diag, go tailgating, get a lot of free food, attend opera shows, do a zipline all for free on the campus.
Accommodation
- Using WhatsApp groups, people used spreadsheets to capture their information and find roommates. For the first year, my rent was 500$ including utilities for a shared bedroom in Central Campus.
- I was living with someone I already knew in Michigan, so I did not face any challenges when it came to finding accommodation. The North Campus is relatively cheaper, and bus service is also very reliant.
- I would suggest looking there instead of Central Campus if you are okay with things not being super lively in your immediate vicinity.

Dislikes
- High cost for education
- Winters can be really tough
- Amount of assignments is huge and pressurizing!
Campus Life
- Our university has 2 campuses—North and Central. All facilities are available on campus. Our campus has several events but Festifall is a huge event that introduces freshmen to various clubs and groups.
- There are clubs and bodies that host extracurricular things like painting, study teams, ice skating, outings, sports, and fitness activities to keep interesting things happening throughout.
Accommodation
- I opted for off campus accommodation with help of contacts through whatsapp groups from the university groups. The monthly rent is around 50p-600$ per month including utilities.
- I would suggest students to go for sharing rooms in the beginning and spend more time in the university than spending a lot on accommodation. My accommodation is close to the North campus is 25mins to three Central campus.

Dislikes
- Only dislike is that it can be too big at times and it is very cold. Otherwise all of the above are great!
Campus Life
Campus life was great it was very vibrant socially all year round there’s a ton of spots for students to study and thousands of clubs to get involved with.
Accommodation
I shared a room in a dorm which is what most people did and paid $500 USD in Edinburgh. This is on the low end of what most people end up paying while studying abroad.
Likes
- The education system is very straightforward and the marking system is very clear.
- Education focuses on basic concepts rather than textbook definitions and memorizing things.
- The research opportunities at my University are plenty and very well funded.
Dislikes
- The transportation is not that good, especially during winters.
- The rent is high and on-campus housing is very random and limited.
- The tuition for a master's program is very expensive with very limited TA/RA positions.
Campus Life
The University of Michigan has 3 campuses, Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint. In the Ann Arbor campus, there are a lot of events going on in the downtown area. There are many libraries, and more than 100 student organizations. I took part in 2 of them: the Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC), and Wolverine Support Network (WSN). I currently am a member of the organization Clean-up Campus. I had a lot of fun in these organs and we organized plenty of events such as bowling, lunch with faculties, game night, movie night, etc.
Accommodation
The rent I am paying now is 650$ per month. I live with 2 other roommates in a 2 bed 1 bath apartment. One of the roommate has occupied the living room. The rent for a private room with no one occupying the living room is very high here. And the price is much higher in the downtown area. On campus housing is a bit cheaper but it's very random and limited. Off campus is expensive and one may have to share room if they want to save on rent.

- Flexiblity in my research on a topic I am passionate about. Also, everyone in my lab is welcoming and helpful - no judgments. There's a lot of events ongoing that helps me network and possible collaboration opportunities among different fields.
Dislikes
- Just the winters here sometimes get very long, so the first year can be an adjustment, specially for people from our countries, since we are usually not used to long winters.
Campus Life
Campus life is also good, a feeling of connection to everyone in my cohort. They have a class for first year graduate students to connect and I found some friends from there. A lot of campus wide events happen frequently. Research facilities are amazing.
Accommodation
Accomodation is quite good. Ann Arbor is a student town so it gets competitive, better to apply early after you receive the offer.

- U-M is not only known for its strong academics, but I also love the campus life it has. It was also very appealing to me as well since it’s only 45 minutes away from home
Campus Life
They offer a bunch of different clubs differing from professional organizations that may help with your future career or if you are looking to meet people who share similar backgrounds or interest as you.
Accommodation
The in-campus housing itself is pretty expensive. It’s about $7500 per semester but this includes your room and board as well as food.

- It is a public ivy league college which an amazing course structure and advantages.
Campus Life
Campus life is extremely happening and the events including silent disco party, Indian parties, Indian religious parties, Halloween etc. wifi is available over the entire campus and the Library is available and open 24x7.
Accommodation
Individual and sharing rooms both are available. Shared rooms range from 350-500$ and individual rooms start from 450$-750$ including all utilities like heat, water etc.
