TNAU Ph.D. (Food Science and Nutrition) FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D. (Community Science) in Food and Nutrition at TNAU offered at the Coimbatore campus or the Madurai campus?
Ans. This programme is exclusively offered at the Community Science College and Research Institute (CSCRI), Madurai, which is a constituent campus of TNAU. The TNAU PG Entrance Examination, however, is conducted at the main campus in Coimbatore, and candidates must travel to Coimbatore to appear for the exam. After selection, coursework and research are conducted at the Madurai campus. Students should note that the university may, in some cases, allot coursework to one campus and research work to another as per its discretion, though for this programme the Madurai campus is the primary centre.
Ques. What is the difference between the TNAU entrance exam route and the ICAR AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D.) route for this programme?
Ans. TNAU fills 70% of its Ph.D. seats through its own Common PG Entrance Examination, conducted in physical (offline) mode at TNAU Coimbatore, typically in November. The remaining 30% of seats are filled through ICAR's AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D.) examination conducted by NTA, usually in July. The key advantage of the ICAR route is that qualified candidates also receive the ICAR-JRF/SRF fellowship (Rs. 31,000-35,000/month), which is not automatically available to candidates admitted through TNAU's own entrance exam. Candidates admitted via TNAU's exam can still apply for TNAU's own fellowships (Research Assistant Scholarship, Vice-Chancellor's Fellowship) separately. Both routes lead to the same degree and academic experience at the Madurai campus.
Ques. What qualifying Master's degrees are accepted for admission to this Ph.D. programme at TNAU?
Ans. TNAU accepts M.Sc. (Home Science) / M.Sc. (H.Sc.) in Foods and Nutrition / M.Sc. (Food Science and Nutrition) / M.Tech. (Food Process Engineering) / M.Tech. (Food Science and Technology) / M.Sc. (Community Science) Food Science and Nutrition / M.Sc. (Community Science) in Food and Nutrition as qualifying degrees. Crucially, these degrees must be from State Agricultural Universities (SAUs), ICAR Institutes, Central Agricultural Universities, or Government-aided agricultural colleges. Degrees from general universities or private deemed universities not under the SAU system are not accepted. Candidates must also have a minimum OGPA of 7.00/10.00 in their Master's programme to be eligible.
Ques. What are the key research areas and facilities available for Ph.D. scholars in Food Science and Nutrition at TNAU Madurai?
Ans. The Department of Food Science and Nutrition at CSCRI, Madurai, has been conducting research since 1988 and is one of the oldest and most established departments in this field among Indian agricultural universities. Key research areas include smart personalized nutrition, nutrigenomics, food nanotechnology, food biotechnology, mathematical modelling in food formulation, designer foods, therapeutic functional foods, maternal and child nutrition, and public health nutrition. The department has well-equipped food science and nutrition laboratories, and scholars have access to TNAU's library with over 4,000 online journals. Research outcomes frequently result in innovative food products with scope for patenting and commercialization. Students are also encouraged to attend national and international symposia and undertake research internships at other institutes.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing a Ph.D. in Food Science and Nutrition from TNAU?
Ans. Alumni of this programme have gone on to hold positions as Professors and Heads of Departments at TNAU and other agricultural universities, Research Fellows at CSIR-CFTRI (Mysore) and IIFPT (Thanjavur), Additional Directors at national bodies like NIPCCD (Ministry of Women and Child Development), Child Development Project Officers under ICDS, Subject Matter Specialists at KVKs, and Assistant Professors at various colleges. The programme opens doors to academic positions, R&D roles in the food processing industry, food testing laboratories, medical nutrition, food biotechnology firms, health food sector, and government nutrition programmes. Post-doctoral fellowships from DST, UGC, and ICAR are also available for those wishing to pursue further research.
Ques. How competitive is admission to this programme, and what OGPA is typically needed to secure a seat?
Ans. The programme is highly competitive given the limited seat intake (typically 3-5 seats per year across all categories, including ICAR quota). The minimum eligibility is an OGPA of 7.00/10.00 in the Master's programme, but candidates with higher OGPAs (8.00+ out of 10.00) are generally more competitive for the TNAU entrance exam route. For the ICAR route, the rank in the AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D.) examination is the primary criterion. The TNAU entrance exam is MCQ-based (100 marks: 75 marks subject-specific in Food Science and Nutrition + 15 marks General Agriculture + 10 marks Aptitude), conducted in OMR format for 1 hour at TNAU Coimbatore. Candidates are advised to prepare thoroughly in the subject matter, particularly in macro and micronutrient metabolism, food biotechnology, and public health nutrition.
