TNAU B.Tech (Agr. Eng.) FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech Agricultural Engineering at AEC&RI, Coimbatore and AEC&RI, Kumulur (Trichy)?
Ans. The B.Tech Agricultural Engineering at AEC&RI, Coimbatore is offered in self-supporting mode, meaning the fee is significantly higher (approximately ₹63,000 per semester vs. approximately ₹23,000 per semester at Kumulur). The Kumulur campus is a government-funded program and also has ICAR quota seats (20% supernumerary), while the Coimbatore campus does not have ICAR quota seats. Both campuses follow the same ICAR-approved curriculum. The Coimbatore campus is located within the main TNAU campus, giving students access to better infrastructure and research facilities. Students who get a lower rank in counselling and cannot secure a seat at Kumulur may opt for the Coimbatore self-supporting program.
Ques. Is there any entrance exam required for admission to B.Tech Agricultural Engineering at TNAU Coimbatore?
Ans. No entrance exam is required for Tamil Nadu students. Admission is based entirely on Class 12 marks (aggregate of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology). The rank list is prepared by TNAU based on these marks, and seats are allotted through online counselling. However, students from outside Tamil Nadu who wish to apply through the ICAR quota (applicable only at AEC&RI, Kumulur) must appear for the CUET (ICAR-UG) exam conducted by NTA. For the Coimbatore self-supporting campus, there is no ICAR quota, so all admissions are through TNAU counselling only.
Ques. What are the career options after completing B.Tech Agricultural Engineering from TNAU?
Ans. Graduates have a wide range of career options. In the private sector, companies like Mahindra and Mahindra, John Deere, TAFE, Jain Irrigation, and various agri-tech startups recruit agricultural engineers for roles in farm machinery, irrigation systems, and food processing. In the government sector, graduates can apply for positions in state agricultural engineering departments, ICAR research stations, and KVKs (Krishi Vigyan Kendras). Higher studies options include M.Tech through GATE (AG paper) at IITs and other agricultural universities, MBA in Agri-Business Management, and PhD programs. Graduates are also eligible for civil services and state PSC exams where agricultural engineering is an optional subject.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation mandatory at AEC&RI, Coimbatore? What are the hostel charges?
Ans. All students are expected to reside in the hostel attached to the college. Day-scholar status is granted only in exceptional cases with the Dean's approval. The institutional hostel/educational infrastructure charge is ₹1,800 per semester (included in the semester fee). Mess charges are separate and are run on a student-managed dividing system, meaning the actual mess cost depends on the number of students and monthly expenses, typically ranging from ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 per month. TNAU hostels have separate facilities for men and women, with WiFi internet connectivity.
Ques. Can a student who discontinues B.Tech Agricultural Engineering at TNAU re-apply in a future year?
Ans. No. As per TNAU's strict policy, a student who discontinues any undergraduate degree program at TNAU after registering for the first semester is permanently ineligible for admission to any UG program at TNAU in the future. Additionally, if the student discontinues after 105 working days of the first-year first-semester examinations, they must pay a discontinuation fee of ₹2,00,000 to TNAU. This rule applies to all students admitted through TNAU counselling quota in constituent colleges. Students should therefore be very certain before accepting a seat.
Ques. What subjects are covered in B.Tech Agricultural Engineering at TNAU, and how is the curriculum structured?
Ans. The 4-year (8-semester) program covers five major engineering streams: (1) Farm Power and Machinery - covering tractors, farm implements, mechanization; (2) Soil and Water Engineering - irrigation, drainage, watershed management; (3) Food Process Engineering - post-harvest technology, grain processing, dryers; (4) Renewable Energy - solar, biogas, wind energy applications in agriculture; and (5) Agricultural Structures and Environment. In addition, students study fundamentals of mechanical, civil, electrical, and computer engineering. The curriculum is designed by ICAR and is uniform across all ICAR-affiliated agricultural universities, ensuring national-level recognition of the degree.
