MGU M.Com FAQs

Ques. What are the specific elective papers in the Finance and Taxation stream of MGU M.Com?

Ans. The Finance and Taxation stream (Group 1) under MGU M.Com PGCSS 2019 includes three elective papers spread across Semesters 3 and 4. In Semester 3, students study Indirect Tax Laws, which covers GST, customs duty, and other indirect tax provisions. In Semester 4, the two elective papers are Derivatives and Risk Management (covering futures, options, swaps, and hedging strategies) and Personal Investment and Behavioural Finance (covering investment planning, mutual funds, and behavioural aspects of financial decision-making). These papers, combined with core papers on Income Tax Law and Practice and Advanced Cost and Management Accounting, make this stream highly relevant for careers in taxation and financial services.

Ques. Is the MGU M.Com Finance and Taxation degree useful for CA/CMA aspirants?

Ans. Yes, the MGU M.Com Finance and Taxation programme is highly complementary for CA (Chartered Accountancy) and CMA (Cost and Management Accountancy) aspirants. The core curriculum covers Specialised Accounting, Advanced Corporate Accounting, Income Tax Law and Practice, Income Tax Assessment and Procedure, and Advanced Cost and Management Accounting, which overlap significantly with CA/CMA syllabi. Many students pursue M.Com alongside CA/CMA articleship or inter-level studies. Additionally, M.Com graduates are eligible to appear for UGC NET (Commerce) for lectureship and JRF, opening academic career pathways.

Ques. How competitive is admission to M.Com Finance and Taxation at MGU affiliated colleges?

Ans. Admission competitiveness varies by college. Reputed aided colleges like CMS College Kottayam, St. Berchmans College Changanacherry, and Baselius College Kottayam tend to have higher competition, with rank list marks often above 85-90% for the first allotment. Self-financing colleges generally have more seats available and are less competitive. The rank list is based on B.Com/BBA/BBM Part III marks standardized to 1000, so your undergraduate performance is the primary determinant. Students with strong academic records in B.Com (Finance/Taxation) have an advantage.

Ques. Can a BBA graduate apply for M.Com Finance and Taxation at MGU?

Ans. Yes, BBA and BBM graduates are eligible to apply for M.Com at MGU-affiliated colleges, provided they have secured the minimum required marks (45% in Part III subjects under conventional pattern, or equivalent CGPA under CBCSS pattern). However, BBA graduates from universities other than MGU, Kerala University, or Kannur University must obtain an Equivalency/Eligibility Certificate from MGU before admission. It is also worth noting that BBA graduates may find some core commerce papers (like Advanced Corporate Accounting) more challenging compared to B.Com graduates, so prior preparation is advisable.

Ques. What job roles can I get after M.Com Finance and Taxation from MGU?

Ans. Graduates of M.Com Finance and Taxation from MGU are well-positioned for roles such as Tax Consultant, GST Practitioner, Financial Analyst, Accounts Manager, Audit Assistant, Investment Advisor, and Corporate Finance Executive. They can work in CA firms, corporate finance departments, banks, insurance companies, and government departments. Many graduates also pursue professional certifications like CA, CMA, CS, or CFP to enhance their career prospects. The strong taxation curriculum (covering both direct and indirect taxes) is particularly valued by CA firms and tax consultancy practices in Kerala and across India.

Ques. Is there any difference in the degree certificate for different M.Com specializations at MGU?

Ans. Yes, the degree certificate issued by Mahatma Gandhi University specifies the specialization stream. A student who completes M.Com under the Finance and Taxation stream will receive a degree certificate mentioning M.Com (Finance and Taxation), while those in other streams will have their respective specializations mentioned. This distinction is important for job applications and higher studies, as employers and institutions can identify your area of specialization. The specialization is also reflected in the mark sheets, which list the elective papers studied under the chosen stream.
