The Post Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood and Foundational Stage Education (PGDECFE) is a one-year postgraduate diploma programme offered by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) through Open Distance Learning (ODL) mode under the School of Continuing Education (SOCE). Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the programme focuses on the period from birth to 8 years - covering early childhood care, preschool education, and the foundational stage (Classes 1 and 2). With a total programme fee of Rs. 11,000 and a duration of minimum 1 year (maximum 3 years), it is designed for educators, ECCE workers, preschool teachers, and professionals working with young children. The programme carries 40 credits including theory courses, a Supervised Practicum, and Project Work/Internship components, making it a comprehensive professional development qualification. It is available across a very wide network of 150+ study centres pan-India, making it one of the most accessible early childhood education programmes in the country.
Admissions to PGDECFE are offered twice a year - in the January session and the July session. For the January 2026 session, the last date for submission of the application form has been extended to 30 March 2026. The July 2026 session is expected to open for admissions in May 2026, with the last date tentatively in October 2026 based on the previous year's pattern. Students admitted in the January 2026 session will appear for the June 2026 Term-End Examination (TEE), which commences from 1 June 2026.
