The NIT Silchar Cutoff 2026 for admission to various courses will be based on entrance exams like JEE Main, GATE, CSAB, DASA. After the exams, seats are allocated through counselling processes conducted by authorities like JoSAA and CSAB. In 2025, the most competitive program was B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering) with a closing rank of 11,112 for the General category, while B.Tech (Civil Engineering) had the lowest cutoff at 39,914. Candidates preparing for the 2026 admission cycle should expect the cutoffs to remain high for top courses like B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering), B.Tech (Electronics & Communication Engineering), B.Tech (Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering).

Looking at the past cutoff trends shows how the competition has changed. For example, the closing rank for B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering) changed from 10,284 in 2024 to 11,112 in 2025. Students can check the complete category-wise (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS) and round-wise seat allotment data below to find their safe score.

NIT Silchar Cutoff Overview: Quick Highlights

  • Highest Cutoff: B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering) was the most demanded branch, closing at 11,112 rank in the General category. Students aiming for this course need a top-tier score.
  • Lowest Cutoff: B.Tech (Civil Engineering) had the lowest entry requirement, closing at 39,914 rank. This indicates the minimum score required to enter the institute through the General category.
  • Admission Process: Seat allocation is managed entirely by JoSAA and CSAB, based strictly on the candidate's entrance exam performance.
  • Target Score for 2026: To secure a seat in the upcoming admission cycle, General category students should target a rank between 11,112 and 39,914.

NIT Silchar is similar to all the other NITs like MANIT, NITJ, NITD still its cutoff/ranking is low, what are the probable reasons?

Sanjana KapoorLives in New Delhi

If you look at all the criteria MHRD takes into consideration while ranking institutes, NIT Silchar is at par with most NITs but in terms of research, and infrastructure. The only parameter in which NIT Silchar was behind NIT Warangal was reputation and the difference was drastic. This affected the overall ranking of the institute in turn lowering the NT Silchar cutoffs.

I think the major reason behind its poor reputation is its remote location and the rumors related to it. It's falsely rumored to be in a Naxalite region and the exposure is believed to be minimal. The institute has a bad reputation, particularly in North India.

I have friends from several NITs and I have safely concluded that NIT Silchar is better than many but it's difficult to convince people of the same and the institute has a bad reputation.

To fix this problem, we need our alumni to be more active in portraying the right image of the institute. Additionally, the institute should hold more inter-college events and strive to build a reputation.
