CSAB Counselling 2026 is the centralized seat allocation process conducted by the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) under the Ministry of Education to fill vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, SPAs, and GFTIs after JoSAA rounds conclude. The process is hosted by NIT Trichy and uses JEE Main 2026 rank — not JEE Advanced. As of today (May 29, 2026), the official CSAB 2026 schedule has not been published; CSAB 2026 Special Rounds are expected to begin in August 2026, after JoSAA 2026 wraps up in late July.
Key upcoming milestones you should track:
- JoSAA 2026: Registration begins June 2, 2026. JoSAA is the mandatory prerequisite — you must participate in JoSAA first. JoSAA 2026 is expected to conclude in the last week of July 2026. (Upcoming)
- CSAB 2026 Registration: Expected to open in late July 2026. In 2025, registration opened on July 30. Fresh registration on csab.nic.in is required — your JoSAA registration does not carry over. (Upcoming)

What is CSAB Counselling 2026?
CSAB stands for Central Seat Allocation Board. It is a seat allocation authority set up by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. NIT Trichy serves as the host institute for CSAB operations. CSAB conducts counselling specifically to fill seats that remain vacant in NITs, IIITs, SPAs (Schools of Planning and Architecture), and GFTIs after all JoSAA rounds are over.
CSAB does not allocate seats in IITs. It uses only your JEE Main 2026 rank — JEE Advanced rank is not considered. If you participated in JoSAA 2026 but did not get a seat, or if you withdrew your JoSAA seat, CSAB gives you another chance to secure admission in a government-funded technical institute.
For 2026, CSAB will operate three programmes:
- CSAB Special Rounds — for general eligible candidates with valid JEE Main rank
- CSAB NEUT (North Eastern States and Union Territories) — for candidates from specific NE states and UTs
- DASA and CSAB-Special — for NRI/OCI candidates (separate track)
In 2026, CSAB has confirmed 114 participating institutes — 9 new GFTIs have been added to the existing 105. The total seat pool across all CSAB 2026 institutes is approximately 48,000 seats. During the 2025 Special Rounds, around 13,727 seats were available across 3 rounds — a similar figure is expected in 2026.

JoSAA vs CSAB: Key Differences
JoSAA and CSAB are two separate counselling authorities, but they work in sequence. JoSAA 2026 runs first, from June to late July 2026, and allocates seats across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. After JoSAA concludes, some seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs remain vacant. CSAB then steps in to fill those leftover seats through its Special Rounds in August 2026. The two processes do not overlap — you must complete JoSAA first before CSAB becomes relevant for you.
A key distinction: JoSAA uses both JEE Advanced rank (for IITs) and JEE Main rank (for NITs/IIITs/GFTIs), while CSAB uses only JEE Main rank. This means IIT aspirants cannot use CSAB for IIT admission under any circumstances.
| Parameter | JoSAA | CSAB Special Rounds |
|---|---|---|
| Full Form | Joint Seat Allocation Authority | Central Seat Allocation Board |
| Conducted By | IIT Bombay (2026 host) | Ministry of Education / NIT Trichy (host) |
| Exam Rank Used | JEE Advanced (IITs) + JEE Main (NITs/IIITs/GFTIs) | JEE Main only |
| Institutes Covered | IITs + NITs + IIITs + GFTIs | NITs + IIITs + SPAs + GFTIs (no IITs) |
| Number of Rounds | 6 rounds | 2–3 special rounds |
| When Conducted | June – July 2026 | August – September 2026 |
| Seats Available | All seats at participating institutes | Only vacant seats remaining after JoSAA |
| Who Can Apply | All JEE Main / JEE Advanced qualified candidates | Candidates who did not confirm a seat in JoSAA |

CSAB 2026 Eligibility Criteria
Before you register for CSAB 2026, check that you meet all the eligibility conditions listed below. Meeting these criteria is mandatory — failing any one of them will disqualify your application.
Academic Qualification:
- You must have passed Class XII (or equivalent) in 2024 or 2025 from a recognized board.
- You must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects in Class XII.
- You must have scored at least 75% aggregate marks in Class XII PCM subjects. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the minimum is 65%.
- Alternatively, you must be in the top 20 percentile of your respective board in the Class XII examination.
Entrance Exam Rank:
- A valid JEE Main 2026 Paper-1 rank is mandatory for B.E./B.Tech programmes.
- JEE Advanced rank alone does not make you eligible — you need the JEE Main rank.
JoSAA Participation Condition:
- You must not have a confirmed (frozen) seat through JoSAA 2026 at the time of CSAB registration.
- Candidates who participated in JoSAA but did not receive any allotment are eligible.
- Candidates who withdrew their JoSAA seat voluntarily are also eligible.
Nationality:
- Only Indian nationals can apply under the CSAB Special Rounds track.
- NRI and OCI candidates must apply through the DASA scheme, which is a separate process.
Age Limit:
- There is no separate age restriction beyond what is applicable for JEE Main eligibility.
CSAB 2026 Registration Process
CSAB registration is a completely fresh process. Your JoSAA 2026 registration does not automatically carry over to CSAB. You must visit csab.nic.in and register separately when the window opens, expected in late July 2026.
Follow these steps to complete your CSAB 2026 registration:
- Visit the official website: Go to csab.nic.in and click on the CSAB Special Rounds 2026 registration link.
- Enter JEE Main credentials: Log in using your JEE Main 2026 Application Number and Date of Birth.
- Fill personal and academic details: Enter your name, contact details, Class XII board, percentage, and category details accurately.
- Upload documents: Upload scanned copies of your Class XII marksheet, JEE Main rank card, category certificate (if applicable), and a passport-size photograph.
- Pay SRPF (non-refundable): Pay the Seat Registration and Processing Fee. This fee is non-refundable regardless of allotment outcome.
- Pay SREF (refundable security deposit): Pay the Seat Reservation and Enrollment Fee after opting to participate. This is refunded if you do not receive any seat allotment.
- Fill and lock choices: Select your preferred programmes and institutes and submit your choices before the deadline.
Registration Fee (2026 — expected based on 2025 figures):
| Category | SRPF (Non-Refundable) | SREF (Refundable) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| GEN / EWS / OBC-NCL | ~₹5,000 | ~₹35,000–40,000 | ~₹40,000–45,000 |
| SC / ST / PwD | ~₹5,000 | ~₹14,000–20,000 | ~₹19,000–25,000 |
Payment Modes accepted: Net Banking, Debit Card, Credit Card, UPI, and SBI e-Challan.
The SREF is refundable if no seat is allotted to you in any round. However, if you receive a seat allotment and choose not to report, the SRPF is forfeited. Always keep the fee payment receipt as proof.
CSAB 2026 Choice Filling
Choice filling is the most important step in the CSAB process. The seats you get depend entirely on which programmes you choose and in what order. Take this step seriously — a well-filled preference list can significantly improve your chances of getting a good institute or branch.
How choice filling works:
- After paying the SREF, you can access the choice filling portal on csab.nic.in.
- You can choose from all available B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Planning, and Pharmacy programmes across NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and SPAs participating in CSAB 2026.
- Each programme-institute combination is counted as one choice.
- You can add, remove, and reorder choices until the deadline.
- Once you lock your choices, no further changes are allowed — even minor edits.
Mock Allocation feature:
- CSAB provides a mock allocation tool on the portal before the deadline.
- Use it to simulate where you might get a seat based on your current choice order and the previous year’s seat matrix.
- This helps you reorder your preferences before final locking.
After seat allotment — Freeze, Float, Slide options:
Once Round 1 allotment is declared, you have three response options. Choose carefully as your decision affects further rounds:
- Freeze: You accept the currently allotted seat and exit further rounds. No upgrade is attempted. This is your final seat.
- Float: You accept the current seat but also want CSAB to check if any higher preference on your list becomes available. If a better seat opens up in the next round, you will be upgraded automatically. If not, you keep your current seat.
- Slide: You accept the current seat but want CSAB to check if a better branch at the same institute (from a higher preference on your list) is available. You stay at the same institute either way.
CSAB 2026 Seat Allotment Process
CSAB 2026 will conduct seat allotment in 2 phases as announced by the CSAB Chairman. The allotment is purely merit-cum-preference based — your JEE Main 2026 rank determines your position in the queue, and your locked choices determine which seat you receive.
How allotment is done:
- Candidates are ranked within their respective categories (GEN, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD) using JEE Main 2026 rank.
- Seats are allocated in order of rank. The candidate with the better (lower) rank gets first preference among those who listed the same programme.
- CSAB assigns the highest-preference seat available to each candidate based on the locked choice list.
- Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) quota seats are separately filled as per applicable rules.
Round-by-Round process:
- After Round 1 Allotment: Log in to csab.nic.in and check your allotment. You must respond by the deadline. Choose Freeze, Float, or Slide. Pay any remaining fee if required. If you reject the seat, you can participate in Round 2 — but you lose your Round 1 allotment.
- After Round 2 Allotment (Final Round): This is the last round. If you have a seat, you must report to the institute within the reporting deadline. There is no further round to fall back on. If you do not report, your seat is cancelled and the SRPF is forfeited.
After allotment, complete online document verification on the CSAB portal before physically reporting to the allotted institute.

CSAB 2026 Cutoff: Previous Year Trends
CSAB Special Round cutoffs work differently from JoSAA. Since CSAB fills only leftover vacant seats, and the pool of remaining candidates is smaller, the cutoffs tend to be more relaxed than JoSAA — meaning candidates with higher rank numbers (weaker ranks) can sometimes get seats in premier NITs through CSAB that they could not get in JoSAA. However, this is not guaranteed for all programmes — popular branches in top NITs still attract strong competition even in CSAB rounds.
Cutoffs also vary across rounds. Round 1 cutoffs tend to be tighter (lower rank numbers = better candidates required). By Round 3, cutoffs usually relax as more seats become available from candidates who upgrade or exit.
Note: CSAB 2026 cutoffs will be published after each round’s seat allotment result. The table below shows CSAB 2025 Special Rounds closing rank data and is provided for reference and trend analysis only.| Institute | Programme | Category & Quota | Closing Rank (Round 1) | Closing Rank (Round 3) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NIT Trichy | Computer Science & Engineering | GEN – Other State (OS) | ~1,605 | ~5,881 |
| NIT Warangal | Computer Science & Engineering | GEN – Other State (OS) | – | ~4,200 |
| NIT Surathkal | Computer Science & Engineering | GEN – Other State (OS) | – | ~5,800 |
| NIT Calicut | Computer Science & Engineering | GEN – Other State (OS) | – | ~10,874 |
| NIT Delhi | AI & Data Science | GEN – Other State (OS) | – | 7,758 |
| NIT Kurukshetra | Information Technology | GEN – Other State (OS) | – | 10,816 |
| NIT Trichy | Computer Science & Engineering | OBC-NCL – Other State (OS) | ~2,866 | – |
Key takeaways from the 2025 data:
- NIT Trichy CSE (GEN-OS) saw closing ranks move from ~1,605 in Round 1 to ~5,881 in Round 3 — showing significant relaxation as rounds progress.
- NIT Calicut CSE and NIT Kurukshetra IT had closing ranks beyond 10,000 in the final round — a reasonable chance for candidates in the 8,000–12,000 JEE Main rank range.
- Candidates with JEE Main ranks beyond 20,000 should focus on IIITs and GFTIs where closing ranks are typically more relaxed.

CSAB 2026 Reporting Process
After your seat is allotted in CSAB 2026 and you choose to accept it (Freeze), you must complete the reporting process within the deadline. Reporting has two stages: online reporting and physical reporting. Missing the reporting deadline means automatic seat cancellation.
Stage 1 — Online Reporting:
- Log in to csab.nic.in with your credentials.
- Upload all required documents as listed in the document checklist.
- Confirm your seat acceptance and pay any pending dues (if applicable).
- Download and print the Provisional Allotment Letter and Online Reporting Acknowledgement.
Stage 2 — Physical Reporting at the Institute:
- Visit the allotted institute in person on the specified reporting date (expected last week of August 2026).
- Carry all original documents plus self-attested photocopies.
- Submit documents at the institute’s admissions office for verification.
- Pay any institute-level fees (tuition fee, hostel deposit, etc.) as required by the institute.
- Complete the institute’s internal admission formalities (medical exam, fee payment, hostel allocation, etc.).
Consequences of not reporting:
- Your allotted seat will be cancelled automatically.
- The SRPF (₹5,000) will be forfeited — it will not be refunded.
- You will not be eligible to participate in any further CSAB rounds for that cycle.
If you reported but now want to withdraw: Withdrawal after physical reporting is subject to the institute’s refund policy. The SRPF is non-refundable in all cases.
How to Fill Choices Wisely in CSAB 2026
Choice filling is a one-time opportunity — once locked, nothing can be changed. A poorly filled choice list can result in a seat you do not want, or no seat at all. Use the strategies below to maximize your chances in CSAB 2026.
1. Check previous year cutoffs before filling choices:
Always look at CSAB 2025 Special Rounds closing ranks for the programmes you are interested in. Compare your JEE Main 2026 rank against those cutoffs to assess your realistic chances before adding a choice.
2. Fill 15 to 20 or more choices:
CSAB allows you to fill a large number of choices. More choices means more chances. Candidates who fill only 5–6 choices often miss out on seats. Aim for at least 15–20 well-researched choices across multiple institutes.
3. Use the Mock Allocation feature:
CSAB provides a mock allocation tool before the choice locking deadline. Run it with your current choice list to see where you might land. If the result is unsatisfactory, reorder your preferences before final locking.
4. Balance Home State and Other State quota carefully:
If your home state has an NIT, the Home State (HS) quota gives you 50% of seats with a more relaxed cutoff. Prioritize HS quota choices for your home-state NIT if relevant. For Other State (OS) quota seats, cutoffs are typically tighter at popular institutes.
5. Prioritize branch vs institute strategically:
Decide whether you value institute reputation more or programme relevance more. If you want CSE or IT at any NIT, rank all NIT CSE/IT choices at the top. If you want to attend a specific NIT regardless of branch, list all branches of that NIT from most to least preferred.
6. Do not fill only top NITs:
A common mistake is listing only NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, and NIT Surathkal. If your rank does not clear those cutoffs, you end up with nothing. Always include Tier-2 NITs, strong IIITs, and reputed GFTIs in your list as backup choices.
7. Use Float and Slide after Round 1 allotment:
If your Round 1 allotment is not your top choice, use Float to try for a higher preference in Round 2. Use Slide if you want to stay at the same institute but try for a better branch. These options let you improve your outcome without losing the current seat.
8. Lock your choices before the deadline:
The system does not auto-lock on your behalf. If you forget to lock, your choices may not be considered for allotment. Set a reminder well before the deadline and lock your final list at least a few hours early to avoid last-minute technical issues.
FAQs on CSAB Counselling 2026
Ques. What is CSAB counselling?
Ans. CSAB stands for Central Seat Allocation Board. It is a centralized counselling process conducted by the Ministry of Education, with NIT Trichy as the host institute. CSAB fills vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, SPAs, and GFTIs that remain after all JoSAA rounds are completed. It uses the JEE Main rank for seat allocation and is conducted every year in August–September.
Ques. What is the difference between JoSAA and CSAB?
Ans. JoSAA is the primary counselling process that covers IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. It runs from June to July and uses both JEE Advanced and JEE Main ranks. CSAB runs after JoSAA, only in NITs, IIITs, SPAs, and GFTIs (not IITs), and uses only JEE Main rank. CSAB fills seats that are left vacant after JoSAA concludes. You must participate in JoSAA first before becoming eligible for CSAB.
Ques. Can I apply for CSAB if I did not participate in JoSAA?
Ans. Generally, CSAB eligibility requires that you participated in JoSAA but did not receive or did not confirm a seat. If you did not register for JoSAA at all, you may not be eligible for CSAB Special Rounds. Always check the official eligibility conditions on csab.nic.in once the 2026 notification is published.
Ques. What JEE Main rank is needed for CSAB 2026?
Ans. There is no fixed minimum rank to register for CSAB. However, whether you actually receive a seat depends on the available seats, your category, and the cutoff ranks for your chosen programmes. Based on 2025 data, candidates with JEE Main ranks up to ~10,000–12,000 (GEN-OS) received seats in popular NIT programmes through CSAB. Candidates with ranks beyond 20,000 can still get seats in IIITs and GFTIs.
Ques. How many special rounds does CSAB have?
Ans. CSAB 2026 is announced to be conducted in 2 phases, as confirmed by the CSAB Chairman. In 2025, CSAB conducted 3 special rounds. The final number of rounds for 2026 will be confirmed in the official schedule once published on csab.nic.in.
Ques. What is CSAB NEUT?
Ans. CSAB NEUT stands for North Eastern States and Union Territories. It is a special allocation programme within CSAB for candidates who are domicile residents of the 8 North Eastern states (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura) and 5 Union Territories (Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Ladakh). NEUT 2026 has approximately 1,063 seats and runs before the CSAB Special Rounds, in July 2026.
Ques. What is the registration fee for CSAB 2026?
Ans. The official fee for CSAB 2026 has not been announced yet. Based on 2025 figures, the total fee for GEN/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates was approximately ₹40,000 (₹5,000 SRPF non-refundable + ₹35,000 SREF refundable). For SC/ST/PwD candidates, it was approximately ₹19,000. A slight increase is expected for 2026. Check csab.nic.in for the final 2026 fee once the notification is released.
Ques. Can I get a seat in NIT through CSAB?
Ans. Yes. All 31 NITs participate in CSAB Special Rounds. CSAB fills vacant NIT seats that were not taken in JoSAA. In 2025, approximately 4,580 NIT seats were available through CSAB. Popular branches like CSE at top NITs still have competitive cutoffs, but Tier-2 NITs and non-CSE branches have more relaxed cutoffs. Fill as many NIT choices as possible across different institutes and branches to maximize your chances.
Ques. What documents are required for CSAB reporting?
Ans. You need Class X and Class XII marksheets and certificates, JEE Main 2026 rank card, CSAB provisional allotment letter, fee payment receipt, category certificate (OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS/PwD as applicable), 8 passport-size photographs, and a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport, or Driving Licence). NEUT candidates must also carry a domicile or PR certificate. Carry originals and at least 3 self-attested photocopies of each document.
Ques. What is freeze, float, and slide in CSAB?
Ans. These are the three options you choose after receiving a seat allotment in CSAB. Freeze means you accept the allotted seat as your final seat and exit all further rounds. Float means you accept the current seat but want CSAB to check if any higher preference on your list becomes available in the next round — if it does, you are automatically upgraded; if not, you keep your current seat. Slide means you accept the current seat but want CSAB to check if a better branch at the same institute (from a higher preference) is available — you stay at the same institute regardless of whether an upgrade is found.

With around 398000 rank in JEE Main, getting a seat in National Institutes of Technology (NITs) or Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) is highly unlikely through regular counseling. Such ranks exceed cutoffs. You may explore private colleges and state quota institutes.
To participate in the Central Seat Allocation Board, register on the official portal using your JEE Main details, pay the counseling fee, and fill in college choices. Seats are allotted based on rank and preferences. If allotted, complete document verification and report to the institute within the given timeline to confirm admission.
