NIT Silchar: 12 Answered Questions

How is the coding culture at NIT Silchar? Is it worth joining CSE in NIT Silchar?

Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

If you are passionate about coding and want a profession in this domain, NIT Silchar is the right place for you-

  1. Computer Science Society- CSS at NIT Silchar is the most active society of the institute. As a member of this society, your coding skills will be enhanced. CSS conducts coding classes for all CSE students. So if you don’t know programming yet, they will teach you the basics before the start of actual classes. By the second semester, you will be way better at coding than your peers in other branches. CSS also arranges coding classes by Oracle and other well-known companies.
  2. Coding Club- Unlike CSS, the coding club is open to students from all branches. It conducts regular classes after college hours. You’ll be taught Data Structures during the first year. These classes are absolutely free of cost.
  3. Coding Competitions- NIT Silchar regularly organizes web development competitions, coding competitions, and other fun events on campus. You’ll be encouraged to take part in these.
  4. Faculty- The CSE faculty teaches well. They will show interest in your caliber, your coding skills, etc.
  5. Seniors- The seniors of CSE branch are really helpful and supportive.

Even if you don’t know much about programming, NITS will make you fall in love with it. The CSE department is absolutely great over there.

Which is a better choice at NIT Silchar, Mechanical or CSE?

Lipika ChakrabortyB.tech from National Institute of Technology Silchar (2020)

Most students, freshly out of school, try to choose an Engineering branch for themselves. You might be someone who has a deep passion for either Mechanical or CSE. In that case, I would advise you to follow your heart.

But if you think not opting for CSE is a bad decision, just ask yourself why you would consider CSE. Is it because you did some coding in your school days and wish to enter into that field, or simply because CSE is popular. Don’t be in the illusion of liking a branch just because everyone is recommending it. Also, don’t go for any branch solely because it has better placements than the other. As long as you enjoy a particular field, you will get good offers.

NIT Silchar

Mechanical is a good branch at NIT Silchar. Moreover, as research has become increasingly interdisciplinary in nature, various departments collaborate with one another these days. Even Mechanical has a good involvement of CSE- Robotics, CFD, etc. all involve high level coding and the knowledge of Data Structures. Because today most campuses witness IT placements more than core profiles, I would highly recommend you consult the alumni of Mechanical to figure out what placements are like in ground reality.

These are the 2022 placement stats for both the branches at NIT Silchar-

Also, NIT Silchar offers a branch change after the 2nd semester. This is based on your performance in the first two semesters. In case you feel dissatisfied with your choice, you can opt for branch change as well.

For your first year (whichever branch you choose) maintain good grades, talk to your seniors and explore your stream.

Which is better, NIT Silchar CSE or IIIT Jabalpur CSE?

Sabeer Chalana
Tithi AggrawalLives in New Delhi

Both NIT Silchar as well as IIIT Jabalpur are backed by the Government of India and have similar facilities. The campus, faculty, and alumni network are great in both cases. However, there are some additional parameters in which IIIT Jabalpur fares better making it a more preferable choice. Some of them have been mentioned below

  • Location : Jabalpur enjoys a good location in the heart of the country while NIT Silchar is located remotely in the North-East. Therefore IIIT Jabalpur has better connectivity and exposure.
  • International collaboration: IIIT Jabalpur has ties with Japan resulting in frequent lectures conducted by Japanese faculty and frequent visits to Japan. Such international ties give it an edge over NIT Silchar in the kind of opportunities offered.
  • Clubs: IIIT Jabalpur has several technical, cultural, and sports clubs, constituting the Student Gymkhana that ensures the holistic development of the students.
  • Coding Culture: The institute is known to have an active coding culture that is promoted by many active programming, web development, and graphics designing clubs.

Overall, if you are passionate about academics and research, then go for IIIT Jabalpur but if you want a more vibrant college life choose NIT Silchar.

Is NIT Silchar a good choice to pursue a B.Tech in computer science and engineering?

Prerona Datta
Devdutta BoseStudied at National Institute of Technology Silchar (2019)

B.Tech CSE from NIT Silchar is a good choice. Here are some parameters to assess it-

  • Coursework - The CSE coursework at NIT Silchar is relevant and up-to-date. But the teachers won’t guide you much. You will have to rely on online courses and videos. During your first year, you’ll have just one CS subject which will cover C language and the basic fundamentals of C++. During the 4th year, you will have specialization courses like Data Mining, Neural Networks, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Image Processing, Machine Learning, Speech Processing, Wireless Networks, Cryptography and Cloud Computing.
  • Facilities- NIT Silchar campus has high speed internet facilities. In the CSE department, you will have 24-hour lab access with assigned PCs to work on. There is a SuperComputing Center as well. It can be used during your projects when you will need high processing speeds. The NITS coding club is very active. The CSE department has its own society which is called the Computer Science Society. It organizes workshops, seminars, and offers regular updates on the latest developments in the field of Computer Science.
  • Placements- The placement scenario at NITS is quite good for CSE students. Top companies visit the campus with tech and other job offers. The major recruiters for CSE department include- Microsoft, Samsung, Amazon, DE Shaw & Co, Infosys, Deloitte, and ITC Limited among others.

Which course is better to join, NIT Silchar, ECE, or a 5-year course of CSE at IIITDM Kancheepuram?

Sayantani Barman
Aditi BanerjeeLives in Bangalore

The record of placement statistics at NIT Silchar and IITDM Kancheepuram has been relatively the same in recent years. The core recruiters who are working on AR and VR grab students from the CSE department, especially those who are skilled in coding. IITDM Kacheepuram has an added advantage for the students as they offer design courses other than core courses, which is beneficial during the interview session. Which is better for CSE: NIT Agartala, NIT Silchar, IIIT Kota, or IIIT Kalyani?

Karishma Khatri
Moitrayi RoyStudied at National Institute of Technology Silchar

Among the colleges present in the lot, I would advise you to choose NIT Silchar over NIT Agartala. I have a few friends at the institute and I have heard good things about the institute.

Here are a few of the reasons why NIT Silchar is a better alternative.

  1. IIIT Kota and IIIT Kalyani are pretty new and hence these are generally not the first choice.
  2. NIT Silchar provides some extraordinary facilities like a supercomputing center and exchange programs with the University of Illinois.
  3. For those who are interested in Computer networks, parallel algorithms, etc, and want to pursue their career in these fields, supercomputing provides a very good foundation to get into these fields during the undergraduate coursework.

The above reasons should be enough to choose NIT Silchar.

Which is better in terms of academics for CSE, placement, fee and location, NIT Arunachal, NIT Silchar or PEC Chandigarh?

Madhav AnejaLived in Chandigarh, India

My sister is an alumnus of NIT Arunachal Pradesh and has also visited NIT Silchar several times. As per her experience, the preference order to follow while making a choice between these institutes should be

  • NIT Silchar > NIT Arunachal Pradesh>PEC

The reason I placed NIT Silchar first is because it has better rankings, and even the connectivity issues have been resolved. One can now reach Silchar by road, train and via air. This has improved the placement scenario to a great extent.

The fees of the students are divided as per the category and family income . If a student belong to ST/SC/PWD category then he/she need not to pay the tuition fees irrespective of their family income and he/she has to pay only the other institution fees and hostel+mess fees and these things are applied to that students whose family income is less than 1 lakh . If the family income of a student is between 1 to 5 lakh then he has to pay the 1/3 of tutition fees and the other institution fees and hostel +mess fees . If the family income of a student is above 5 lakh then there is no fee wavier for him/her , he /she has to pay the full tuition fees ,other institution fees and hostel + mess fees . Note that a student has to pay that fixed amount of fees which is asked to pay during josaa counseling as per the category . A student belonging to economically disadvantaged family will not get any kind of fee wavier during josaa counselling . He or she only can get refund the extra money paid during the counselling after the 1st year . At the time of admission a student has to pay the hostel+mess fees and the remaining fees ( if available as per the family inocme) . Ensure that these lines i,e"total family income from all the sources " are mentioned in your income ceretificate otherwise you will not be eligible for the fee wavier . In 2024 , many students( specily from assam region) are deprived from the fee wavier .
