What Students Say
Likes
- The infrastructure is great, The atmosphere and the environment is great as well
- Relatively calm compared to other engineering colleges
- The distance from college to roadside to get a bus is not great but definitely not the worst
Dislikes
- The faculty is a mixed bag...some are great and some are shit.
- There's a lot of confusion in the college at the beginning and even as you spend time there it's hard to navigate in the college. Feels like a labyrinth.
- Lack of internet and power ports to use in classroom.. In first year it didn't affect me but right now not having power sockets in the classroom other than the ones near the board really sucks.
Course Curriculum Overview
Well I chose my specific course not by choice because my first choice was CSE-AIML but I had interest in Cybersecurity so it's not too bad. That's the influence I can say. The curriculum gives you the foundation to develop your knowledge to solve real world applications...which is great and essential. Well teaching methods i feel... it's better to stick with whiteboard and marker tactics rather than slide show presentations... It is much more effective and I feel reaches out more and helps in understanding the topics... Yeah.the frequency of exam at first felt very high...but now it feels adequate but still I wish there was more time between exams especially CIE-2 to SEE which is just 10-13 days of gap which is kind of sufficient but not enough.
Placement Experience
Students are eligible after 7th or 8th sem for placements. There are so many companies visit in our college... it's hard to list them but yeah... Highested package ever is i think 50LPA but I am damn sure it could be an offcampus stuff and average package is around 3-4LPA Percentage of students getting placed varies WILDLY with respect to department and as far as my department is concerned we are not doing too bad...around 60-65% My main plan after getting the degree is to first get a job on campus and pay up my education loan
Fees and Financial Aid
The year wise fees that I pay is 1,30,956 which includes my base tution fees plus 15,000 skill lab fees. There's a semester wise exam fees of Rs 4,500 every semester. Since I joined this college through government fees everything is fixed and in the first year I had also paid 2,500 for VTU to register my seat and to recieve my USN My batchmates have exact same fees IF they are getting the seat from KCET which is the government quota but if you get a seat from management then the fees varies WILDLY. Depending on your K-CET rank it could go from 1,75,000 Rupees all the way upto 3,00,000 per year and that too just base tution fees for the same exact course which I pay at 1,30,956. I don't use college bus or live in hostel so I don't know the prices of them but they increase it every two semesters by 1-4 thousand rupees. There are standard scholarshipa like SSP if you are from Karnataka. Other than that i don't know about any other scholarships since I am ineligible for all the scholarships.
Campus Life
There are only few annual events that happen but they are much better than the other colleges nearby. Only Nitte is the one which has more and better events than us There 3 smaller recurring events and one main major event every year 1. Sentia: the major event of our college, which is of 2-4 days in which there's annual day, there's DJ night, Traditional Day, lots of events and then finally the main highlight is Celebrity night. Last year we had Jonita Gandhi which was insane I don't know much about the books and journals availability but I'm pretty sure it's the good because we have a lot of connection with VTU consortium. I can give a basic overview because I don't play sports in college We have basketball ground,Cricket ground and badminton playground too...all seperate and a huge common ground... don't ask me the size... it's not humongous but it's pretty adequate. We also have gym but it's only for hostellites obviously. There are clubs like Mask Club for theatre and drama and Chords for music club etc. but since I don't involve in it i can't share anything.
Admission
I chose this college because of my rank. This college was in second place in my list because of which I joined this college.i have applied to Nitte engineering college but due to the rank cutoff i didn't get a free seat so rejected that and due to my high KCET rank i couldn't go to sahayadri or St. Joseph mangalore which is kind of false since if I had waited for 2nd or 3rd round counselling I could have gotten it but I didn't knew it. I didn't make it to Sahyadri and all due to rank limitations but with Nitte I didn't go because I had what 850 rank in their specific exam but still I didn't get a free seat even though my rank was under 1000 and the office people of Nitte said that the cutoff the year at which I applied is 600 not 1000. I was pissed and tried to negotiate but it didn't work. Nitte's fees is outrageous for CSE so I had to go through CET to get an affordable seat in a college Admission process was simple due to the merit seat. Eligibility is simple...have to write KCET and have to pass 12th... that's it i feel. Exams accepted and most preferred by students is KCET. Cutoff of KCET is from 30,000-90,000 for IT and EC courses and the cutoff is even higher for mechanical, mechatronics etc going above 1,00,000
Faculty
In short atleast for me faculties is a mixed bag. Some are good at teaching but are horrible as a person outside. Some are not at all good at teaching but as a person they are very good and nice and give marks too and even are considerate to students. The name of the faculties I liked are Raghavendra sir from physics cycle. He wasn't an ideal teacher but he did try his best and understood us but here and there I did find him annoying but overall he is very ambitious and I like that in a teacher, reminds me of my old physics teacher who's what 75 years old. And there's no such thing as "best faculty" in my opinion... There will be some issue with every faculty no matter what the college is and it's the reality. Faculties I didn't like are many but it's very personal and very specific to me because...the faculties I might disliked is loved by many so it feels contradictory to even mention them or their subject. Exams? Mainly 3 which is CIE-1,CIE-2 and at the end of semester SEE (CIE stands for Continuous Internal Evaluation which basically means internals) and SEE stands for Semester End Exams... cie-1 is conducted 1-2 months after the sem starts and CIE-2 is conducted 1-2 months after CIE-1 and then after few laboratory exams final exam is conducted and that's it. It depends...some people are born stupid and fail even the easiest subjects and some understandably fail in tough subject so there's no count on how many fail...but there are people who fail. The course curriculum is somewhat relevant due to our college is autonomous but still self study is a must nonetheless and no matter in which college you are!
Night Life
I don't usually stay in college at late night so there's nothing much to say about nightlife. Gym is available only for hostellites Cafeteria... there's two...one is canteen which is pay 60rs (used to be 50) and get a vegetarian filling meal or Food court where there are standard food items with non veg items and yeah the prices are not damn expensive but as a vegetarian myself it is not that worth it unless you are a non vegetarian because they say it's cheaper. Hangout place in college is badminton court.. especially for me, it's nice and peaceful and far from noise and stuff. And yeah the locality as far as I know is pretty safe to roam aotund at night IF YOU ARE allowed to go out at night which is highly unlikely
Other Applied Colleges
Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management (SCEM) | Bachelor of Engineering [BE] (Computer Science and Engineering)
My rank wasn't enough to qualify for this college
