Course Curriculum Overview

3

The course instrumentation engineering comes under the department of electrical engineering, yet it also covers the concepts of electronics. The subjects of this course are extremely industry relevant such as instrumentation devices, embedded systems, wtc. Some of the companies hiring this branch are NVDIA, Texas Instruments, etc. But in major cases, students often go in the field of software development and data science. The exams of IIT KGP's EE dept are considered hardest of all and this department is infamous for being difficult to get grades.

Internships Opportunities

5

Internship opportunities are top notch. These opportunities are availed through CDC[career development centre] in the 3rd year, where students are mandated to experience an internship. Some companies are google, oracle, bcg, etc.

Placement Experience

5

Placements in IIT KGP are one of the best in the country. Average package is around 25 lakhs of this college, highest being 2.4 crores in 2024 batch. Some of the companies visiting are:- Google, Flipkart, Sprinkler, Oracle, JP Morgan, BCG,etc. Some of the portfolios are that of SDE, Finance, Data Scientist, Data analyst, Consulting, etc. Percentage of placed students was about 90% in cse and 70% overall.

Fees and Financial Aid

The total tuition fee per semester in instrumentation engineering branch is 1lakh for general candidates. Apart from this, there is hostel and mess fees etc. which again cost around 50 thousand per semester. For SC,ST candidates , the tuition fee is completely waived, they just need to pay for the hostel and mess fees. The overall amount they need to pay for the complete 4 year btech course is somewhat around 4 lakhs, whereas the total amount for a general candidate is around 12-13 lakhs. A major scholarship programme offered to IIT KGP students is the means cum merit scholarship, awarded upto 25% of the total admissions, based on merit and financial need.

Campus Life

5

The student life at IIT KGP is good. There are lots of fests such as Spring fest[socult fest], kshitij[tech fest]. The library has books ranging from AI/ML to history, literature, etc. Sports and extracurricular activities are prioritized over academics. Some of the clubs are Kharagpur data analytics club, Spectra the art club, Pravah, Encore[dramatics club].

Hostel Facilities

3

The major con is the quality of mess food. The mess food tastes awful, has lot of oil, amost no nutrition. There is no provision for rented accomodation in hostels. However there is a guest house inside the campus where outsiders can stay after booking. Other facilities in the hostels are TT tables, gym, cafe.

Admission

This college is an IIT, which are regarded as the best engineering colleges in the nation. Its NIRF ranking is 5 and its the oldest IIT. Admission to IIT KGP is through JEE ADVANCED, which is considered one of the toughest exams in the country. After qualifying in JEE ADV, according to my ALL INDIA RANK, the best branch I was getting was IIT KGP's Instrumentation Engineering branch.

Faculty

4

Faculty to student ratio in iit kgp is around 1:15. The professors are approachable and often help the students in many fields except only academics. One of my favourite professor is Prof. Atul Jain. He is an associate professor in mechanical department and takes BEM course for the first years. There are majorly 2 exams in each semester, namely midsems and endsems. Apart from that we have class tests. For each subject there is 1 class test before midsem and 1 before endsems.

Night Life

5

The nightlife at KGP is better than the daylife. There are multiple night canteens, restaurants, etc. which remain jampacked with students after classes. There are no hostel or campus timings. Gymkhana is one of the areas which remain full of activities. The campus is extremelym safe, especially for girls. Students often go on nightouts, remain outside till 6 in the morning, watch sunrise from helipad.

Course Curriculum Overview:

-> CSE is the main stream because under this, other courses like Cybersecurity can be learned as extra courses, while still learning things that are very important like DSA and DAA. -> Everything is taught slightly fast and students have to keep up everyday. Even one class missed will be heavy on studying. -> The mic quality in some classes are bad and should be improved. It's impossible to understand what the teachers says when using them. -> Usually term exams start one month after the start of a semester, with the Semester exam being held 3 months later.
