College life at IIT Kharagpur:Review by Anirban Pal

The course of Biotechnology is one of the best in India. This department was the first started in my college in the IIT System. I was forced by my JEE Rank and the desire to study at IIT Kharagpur to choose this course, but it might be the case that sudents might genuinely be interested in this topic before choosing a college.The curriculum is well thought of, judging from the well pacing and the right amount of difficulty in this course. Very useful for future technologies in this evergrowing field. The exams conducted in this domain are very difficult and requires a lot of study.

A lot of internship opportunities are provided at the end of sec9nd year and after the summer break. Students take part in the selection process and get a taste of how the placement process take place in the college.All internships are responsible by CDC( Carrer Development Centre). They make sure the process is simple but it is very difficult to the students as sometimes they might need to sit for an internship interview at two in the morning or 11 at night. However in then end, those who get selected breath a huge relief. More or less around 100 companies arrive during internships and offer around 600 offers. Some of the famous companies include Amazon, Samsung, Databricks etc. where they hire for the software role. I have not yet appeared for the internship so I cannot provide data regarding projects and internship opportunities.

The placements in my college are one of the best in the country. The average salary placed in the year 2023 in 223500INR. Students get eligible for the selection processes and placements in the 7th semester. No. of companies that came to the campus was around 300 and no.of offers made was more than 1500. The details are not made public to the student body but according to AWAAZ, the newsletter from the campus, it was 1.68 Cr from a student from ECE department. Percentage of student placed is around 83.3% from all the departments combined.My plans are still an ongoing thought process.

The campus life is one of the best in India where the best and biggest Asian Techno management fest Kshitij is held and one the biggest Cultural fest in India, Spring Fest. They are typically held in the last weeks of January. Our library is the biggest in Asia with Lakhs of books new and old present in the hands of the students. They can be borrowed when necessary. The classrooms are the best with all possible technology being used and the proper facilities provided to students. Sports and extracurricular activities are followed very heavily in and around the campus. The campus is known for its night life with clubs and socities contributing heavily to the fact.

The hostel facilities are really good. Accomodation for all the students is taken into account. All the queries and the problems regarding the stay of a student in addressed as quickly as possible. Sometimes the authorities take up too much time regarding providing solutions but make up for that by taking new decisions that benefit the student body. Mess food and quality is very high with ACs inisde mess rooms. The registration [rocess is quite straight forward and simple with paper submissions and registration confirmations. The room I currenly have is shared with two more students. The room is nice and spacious.

This college was my dream college IIT Kharagpur, IIT are dream for engineering study all over the country and studying in the oldest amonst them is a privilege. The selection process was through JOSAA where rounds were held based on ranks in JEE Advanced. I did apply for IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi but my rank did not allow me to get selected in. Cutoffs for these are very high and requires dedicated preparation from the students.The overall experience from the study phase is not generally well received.

Faculty to student ratio is quite good: 10-1 with ample time to gain exposure to all the opportunities in the future. Professor Agneyo Ganguly is one the best professors who is kind and the most helpful regarding class attendance and exam questions. Professor Ritobroto Goswami from my department is not one of my favourite professor as he did not respond to my doubts and gave poor marks to everyone from the class. A total of 2 exams: Mid-sem and End-sem per semester, with quizzes, assignments, class test sprinkled in between subjective to professor. High relevance to industry need and the best crop of students come out of this.
