What Students Say
Likes
- The first thing I like to start with is the quality of the teaching faculty. Especially the department (Civil) I am from, the teachers are very well qualified and most of them hold doctorates from IISC, IITs, NITs, etc.
- Apart from their qualifications, they are technically also very sound and we can understand this from the experiences they share in the classes. Apart from that the faculties are also keen in making the students qualify for GATE and other placements.
- Me myself was able to qualify for GATE in the 3rd year itself. Also I cleared it again in 4th year. I also got placed in a certain company. The students are also of good standard as they get admission here after the KEAM entrance exam.
Dislikes
- The following are not something that I disliked, but are my concerns. The first one being the small size of college and very less playing facilities. As I came from a school that focuses on physical activities very much, I felt this as a concern.
- Also the placements do not provide adequate salary packages. Mostly civil engineering companies hire employees with a low package. Also the time after Covid-19 breakout was of recession. Hence I think that also might be a problem.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum and teaching methods are very good except from a point that the syllabus is not upto the standards. The syllabus is prepared by APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (APJKTU). The syllabus before me studying B.tech was a good one which I came to know from the interaction with seniors. But later on it was cut-short. Again it's being cut-short for my juniors and I personally think it's becoming worse. It's because I feel those are some essential concepts that a civil engineer is bound to know when he/she passouts. Also another problem is that most of the subjects and its lab courses are in different semesters. Were it be in the same semester, it would be easier to understand the concepts properly without mugging them up. Since the syllabus is an issue I am giving a lower rating below.
Internships Opportunities
Since internships are not compulsory for our college, most of the students complete the course with good marks and opt for higher studies or go through placements. Me myself got a internship opportunity in SPVC located in Chennai for ?10,000/- per month stipend in the role of a Engineer trainee. But I turned down the offer since I thought it was not necessary. Similarly many others also turn down the same since it is an extra burden during the course also the stipend provided is bare minimum. We get more practical insights from our faculties and the project we do rather than these private companies for a bare minimum package. If a better company comes I would surely opt for the internship but that's not the case in normal colleges like ours. But we have done internship in PWD without stipend for a week or so.
Placement Experience
The students are eligible for placement from the 7th semester onwards. But if a company willing to take students from lower semesters come that will also be entertained. Many companies visited the campus and each company made one offer. To name a few are Schneider Electric, L&T, TCS, Cognizant, Walkaroo international, Zydex, SPVC, Telestation, Aarbee Structures, Nexta Technologies, VKC Pride, etc. Highest package offered was ?50,000/- per month and ?25,000/- per month average. Almost 30-40% students get placed each year and many students opt for higher studies. Me myself qualified GATE 2 times and hence planning to repeat to get a better rank.
Fees and Financial Aid
The total amount that I paid till now is ?56,000/- and considering the miscellaneous charges we can consider ?60,000/-. This amount is for the academics only. College hostel is available only for the girl students and that also for select girl students based on the category, academics, distance from home, income of parents, etc. other girl students and all boys would need to be accommodated in private hostels, paying guest facilities or a rented house/flat. The amount required for hostel is hence not predictable since each students would look for diiferent levels of comfort based on the money they have. Now the scholarships that state government provide include the E-Grantz and other scholarships based on category and income. Some of the scholarships require the students not to have any backlogs during the completion of entire course.
Campus Life
Lakshya is the name of Techfest we organise in the campus and a wide variety of programs and webinars are held. Also Drishya is the arts fest and it is also celebrated with much happiness and dedication. These two fests are mostly political and are organised on random dates based on the availability of funds and permission from authorities. Others festivals like Onam, Christmas, Holi, etc are celebrated on their respective dates each year with enthusiasm and cheerfulness. The library is also a vast one and has all the range of books from technical to fiction. The library also has premium access to Sciencedirect for Journal reading which helps the students for projects and seminars. Each classrooms comes with projectors that aid the faculty to take classes and the labs are equipped with high standards of machinery, electronics and softwares. Sports activities are also held each year and a very healthy competition takes place. Clubs like NSS, ISTE, IEEE, EBSB, Tinkerhub, etc are present.
Admission
All the 12th qualified students having PCM in their schooling can apply for the B.tech course. For the same purpose students will have to register in cee.kerala.gov.in and apply for KEAM entrance. The entrance fee for engineering is ?875/- for general category and ?375/- for SC category. Reservations are available based on categories and each category will have specific number of seats in each colleges. Exams are of average difficulty level and 2 internal exams will be there in each semesters with the concluding university exams of each semesters.
Faculty
Faculty to student ratio is almost 1 faculty to 20 students and I don't think this hindered our academics. As I mentioned before faculties are the best of best. The faculties are very much approachable directly or even through mobile phones even in their non-working hours. More than the students being interactive we can see the faculties being much more interactive than students. We had much senior faculty members and the on-site experiences they share were of next level and it helps mainly in the interviews and the career options we choose.
