Remarks
The college management is not very open about its working and functioning. It has been highly criticized for that. The college management is always reluctant to hear and act on the necessary needs put forth by the student body. It exercises its power too easily and too often.
Entrance Preview
I knew this college offered the best computer science degree programme in South India. It is on par with the CS programme offered at IIT Madras. The placements are also a good reason to join. The year I joined , the computer science department had a placement percentage of more than 95%.This year NITC had 100% placement in CS department. The syllabus is revised periodically to ensure it is up to date. The college also has a good hostel infrastructure compared to most other colleges in the state. The students are also more dedicated and hence creating a healthy competitive environment to learn. The clubs functioning in the college also provide a good platform for the students to put forth their ideas and pursue their non-academic interests.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is regularly updated.Especially it is revised every 4 years for the CS department. The focus on the had dwindled in the past years, so the institute is now trying to direct more funds to promote research. According to the curriculum each student's has to research and complete at least two projects before being awarded the degree.
Internships Opportunities
College as it is does not provide internships to its students. There is a student affairs council functioning inside the college which provides internships and certificates without stipend.
Placement Experience
Placements and internship opportunities are available from 5th semester. Computer science had the most internship opportunities followed by Electronic, electricap and mechanical. Various top companies recruit 3rd years for internships. Placement scenario is also very good. Computer science had 100% placement last year, EC had more than 95%. Mechanical and electrical had around 80% . Civil engineering, biotechnology, engineering physics, production engineering had comparatively less placements.
College Events
There are various cultural, sports and technical events and workshops organised by varios clubs and societies functioning withing the college throughout the year for both Not students and other college students. First years have lots of events organised exclusively for them.Apart from this there is a technical fest- Tathva which is South India's largest technical fest. It is held in the month of October and has participants from almost all the colleges in the state. Then there is the cultural fest Ragam. It has a real cultural and historical significance in the college. It is the flagship event of the institute with a budget of more than a crore. It has hundreds of cultural competitions and also hosts performances by renowned artists from the country and abroad.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fees structure varies for different income groups. If you have SC reservation or your household income is less than a lakh per annum your fees is very nominal(a few hundred). Half the fees is to be paid of your income is in between 1 and 5 lakh( around 30k per sem). If your income is more than 5 lakh your per sem fees would be around ?62000. There are lots of opportunities to apply for scholarships to waiver the fee. The fees structure is quite feasible.
Fees and Financial Aid
College as such does not provide scholarships but there are significance number of scholarships provided by people and institutions exclusively for students studying in NITC
Campus Life
The college comprises of students from all over the country. It even has few students from foreign countries. The gender ratio is maybe around 5:1 for boys. Extra curricular activities take place on a daily basis organised by the various clubs functioning. Sports teams only participate in the inter NIT tournaments. Robotics club conducts events to increase awareness about the advancements in the field. Open weekly debates are also organised on the trending topics. Treasure hunts,Weekly film screening, inter branch tournaments, inter hostel tournaments. Festival celebrations are also a great highlight of the campus life.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facilities is quite good compared to other colleges in the state. There is never a dearth of rooms. Both 4 people rooms and 2 people rooms are available till 3rd year . Final years and post graduates and research students have single rooms. Various messes are available such as north indian, South Indian, Cosmopolitan, Andhra mess etc. These mess food is really cost effective and quite tasty.
Alumni/Alumna
The students are put in touch with the alumni. Almuni mentorship programs take place quite often. Students have opportunities to interact with and discuss their research and other ideas with alumni working in those fields.Whatsapp groups to interact with the Alumni are very active.
Exam Structure
Each semester we have two mid semester exams each accounting for 25% of the total marks in each subject. The end semester exam is usually for the remaining 50% of the marks but for some papers 10% may be assigned to assignments or quizzes leaving 40% for the final exam. The final grading is relative.
Admission
Admission is solely based on JEE Mains rank. I had a rank of 5500.I had opted for CS from NIT Calicut as my first preference.I was alloted a seat in the first round of seat allocation conducted by JoSAA. JoSAA is a joint seat allocation programme for Nits and IITs. I had to report to the institute within a week after being alloted a seat to accept my seat. After all 7 rounds of allotment I had to report and complete my admission. Classes started a week after that.
Faculty
The faculty student ratios is very small. This issue is yet to be resolved. Even though the experienced faculty are very good, the lack of such faculty causes a major amount of classes to be taught by guest lecturers who are given contracts for around a year or two. The teaching of these lectures may not be as expected and clear.
