Remarks

College management does a decent job in organising everything. Everything falls in place unless some calamity disrupts the harmony of the institute.

Entrance Preview

I wanted to opt a college which is one of the top colleges in the country. And my rank is eligible to get Civil and Chemical Engineering in the top NITs. Apart from NIT Trichy and Surathkal, Calicut offers one of the best Chemical Engineering degrees. That is why I opted NIT Calicut. Though I would've got Civil Engineering, I opted for Chemical Engineering because NIT Calicut has a better Chemical Engineering Department.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

I can assure that NIT Calicut updates its course curriculum and regularly and the academic curriculum of some Departments are par with the IITs. Par with IITs in the sense, many times we atleast get to study everything that an IITian studies but not to what depth he studies.

Internships Opportunities

No. But there might be a chance to intern under faculties who are experts in their respective fields. For that, you'll have to contact the faculty directly whose contact will be available on the college website and follow up with them.

Placement Experience

3.5

Placements and job opportunities again depend on the Department that you are pursuing Engineering in. Computer Science has a very good placement stats. 90% of them get placed and there are companies which come to recruit Computer Science students for internships in 3rd year too. ECE has decent placement stats. Chemical has fair packages whereas EEE and Mechanical have fair placement percentages. Civil has not-upto-the-mark placements. And you should be lucky enough to get placed in Biotech and Engineering Physics Depts. And you can always Google to get things right about the placement stats of NIT Calicut.

College Events

5

Talking about events in the college. I can write a 1000 word article if I start describing about each and every event in the college. There are some 10-15 technical and cultural clubs in the college which makes us feel their presence every other day. There will be some or the other event happening in the college every alternative day which has its own set of audience. The events are systematically mainly for first years. The events include Debates, Open mics, Poetry, Short film making, Dance, singing etc... The college is famous for its two biggest fests TATHVA and RAGAM along with two technical symposiums called DRAV (Chemical Dept.) and PRITHVI (Civil Dept.) TATHVA is one of the South India's biggest Techno-management fests and RAGAM is the 4th biggest Cultural Fest in India.

Fee Structure And Facilities

For Bachelors of Technology in NIT Calicut, the fee ranges about 1,70,000 per annum. There is 100% fee wavier for backward castes and for all castes whose family annual income lies below 1,00,000. And 66.66% fee wavier for students whose annual family income lies in between 1,00,000 and 5,00,000. For people who come from outside the country will have to pay 2-3 times of the fee that Indian students pay.

Fees and Financial Aid

College doesn't provide any scholarships as such apart from the fee waviers that I mentioned earlier. But college exposes you to different scholarships in the country to which you may apply on your own.

Campus Life

4

Extracurricular activities are pretty much in this college as I have already mentioned. Talking about campus life, First year boys and girls will have to come back to hostels before 7pm which pisses of everyone. And 2nd-4th year girls will have to report back to their hostels before 9pm. Apart from these curfue issues which are for students' safety, NIT Calicut has a pretty good campus life. Gender ratio is about 60 boys to 40 girls which is decent enough. Sports also have decent facilities in our college and many sport competitions are held yearly called the INTER-NITs where competitions are held between all the NITs.

Hostel Facilities

4

There are 11 hostels in NIT Calicut. 2 for girls and 9 for boys. The hostels are a bit older except 2-3 new hostels. But the hostels are fairly comfortable. There are 11 messes in 11 hostels. Girls can get to choose between Veg and Non-Veg messes which are the only 2 messes that they have. Boys get to choose any of the 7 other messes available (because 2 of them are for exclusively for 1st year boys) which comprise of all types of food like North Indian, South Indian, Andhra and Malayali. The food is also pretty adjustable as you get to choose the kind of food that you eat in your home state.

Alumni/Alumna

The Alumni network of the college is getting pretty stronger these days. Students are getting mentored by Alumni towards their careers. Seniors are the best. We share a pretty strong bond with our seniors as there are numerous committes which consist of students from all the years which bond up the students very well.

Exam Structure

NIT Calicut has one of the most difficult and most tedious exam structures of all the NITs. To quote an example, a guy who failed 5 subjects out of 10 subjects in the first year left the college and got admission in one of the new IITs (reservation saved him). And the same guy who failed in 5 subjects here came up with flying colours in that IIT. And we have two mid semester and one end semester examination which make you feel like exams are around the corner all the time. These 3 set of examinations span the 4-5 month semester.

Admission

The first stage of the admission is the Entrance exam called JEE MAIN conducted by CBSE. Now admission into the college is based on the rank, state and caste that we belong to. Home State people have 50% of the seats reserved for them ( same as all other NITs), and reservation plays a key role as we all of us know. After the results of the Entrance Examination are out, the seat allocation is done by JOSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) for NITs,IITs and other central government recognized institutions combinedly. In this process, we'll be asked to fill up our choices of branch and college. Seat allocation will be done in 7-8 rounds where we get to Freeze, Float or switch accordingly. After the final round, we will have a seat allotted for us. Then we have to report at the allotted college with all the necessary documents and get the registration done.

Faculty

3.5

Assessing the faculty of this college is a bit tougher task. As far as the first year's faculty is concerned, you might get to face one of the worst faculties in the college and sometimes many if you are unlucky enough. There are hardly any excellent faculty for the first years. But when we enter the 2nd year where the core engineering starts, we have some really good faculties in every Department though there are strict. But here lies a clause, out of the six subjects (on an average) that you'll have from 2nd year, you might have 2 really good, 2 good and 2 not-so-good faculties.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum is the worst. Teachers rush through the portions so that they can finish at the earliest. It may be because the university has a unjustifiable timetable. There is very little practicals given. The ones that are given are just for namesake.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Course curriculum is under KTU syllubus do it's fine. There is a change in curriculum coming 2024 which i assume would make a lot of good changes. The curriculum gives you a head start For most of your work, you need to on your own but the faculty is there to help. The frequency of exams is weekly tests + monthly exams. Its not too difficult of an exam.

The students usually start appearing for campus placements in their 6th semester. The training for the campus placements is started for all the students from the 4th semester. Many companies visited for campus placements. But one main problem is that most of them were low packages. Around 4LPA. Some were between 4-6 and a very few between 6-10. Most of them got placed in our batch in some company.
